As much as I'm intrigued by it and I think the hardware looks pretty good, I'm just not interested in handheld at all. That means I'm paying for all the extra stuff that will never be used.

I wonder how many people really want a handheld these days. By forcing it into the design, anybody who's not interested in that functionality won't be wanting to pay for it.

It will however lead to all games coming to one platform which is brilliant IMO.  For example there's some games on the 3DS I wouldn't mind playing but I just don't tend to play handhelds so much these days.  Having the ability to then play those games on the big screen due to being all a part of the same platform/device is a fucking wonderful thing.  Means we should see a lot of the awesome JRPGs that would only be available on say the 3DS this gen be available for both the big screen/handheld on the new platform going forward.

Quite frankly it's a genius idea to get all games in one place, should help Nintendos release schedule a good bit too.

Nintendo Switch world premier demonstrates new entertainment experiences from a home gaming system

In an introductory video released today (http://www.nintendo.com/switch), Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

So it's got a Tegra X2? The X1 that powers the NVidea SHIELD console does a pretty good job of PS3-era games, so I'm optimistic about the new silicon.

Apparently. If it follows the power difference between maxwell (X1) and Pascal then it should be roughly twice as powerful.

if it's the Tegra X2 then it's PS4 level of GPU power - 6GB of Ram is a concern, unless the OS is very lightweight, which it could be as no game installs etc, as it's running off carts.

Yeah, it's not going to be far off current-gen specs. I'm expecting it to be clocked a bit lower since it looks passively cooled though.

Nintendo don't like doing patches for games. Unlike a lot of devs they actually like releasing a game that works properly on day one. There are usb sockets on the side of the dock box. It is a touch screen. Zelda hasn't been cancelled for wiiu either.

I for one am going to miss the days of 50gb patches with this thing.

The only drawback I can think of is, if someone takes this out with them.....no one at home can play anything.

They should by there own Switch then.

I don't see that as a drawback. If I buy a PS4 and take it around my friends, its no longer available to play at home but I know I cant play it on the car ride over.

With this I could (I wouldn't - i'd be driving...)

Looks like a quality handheld device and a dogshit low spec console for 2017.

I'll buy one like I buy everything nintendo, but it's hard to be too excited about functionality that is basically the same as my nvidia shield portable from 2012 with nintendo games and some crap looking detachable mini controllers.

I've really enjoyed my wii u and I'm sure this thing will have good first party games, but hardware wise this excites me no more than if they had decided to just continue with the wii u.
