Nintendo have a lot of goodwill from people of my generation, but they have no idea what to do with it.

Case in point: I'd been waiting 18 months for a Wii U price drop, because I wanted to play NSMBU, Mario 3D Land and Zelda WWHD. Having now seen that they think it's sensible to be priced the same as the PS4 at this point, I've just opted to borrow one and play those games.

Sometimes you feel guilty about someone not getting your money. And sometimes you don't.

I'm sure Nintendo are banking on their proposition being different enough from the competition that it will still be an attractive purchase for a lot of people. There's also the question of their main target audience, which is likely to be a younger crowd than the VR lot.

I'm halfway tempted to sell my Wii U and games while it still has some resale value, TBH. The only game I've really enjoyed is Super Mario 3D World. (Well and Wind Waker, but it's a straight remake.) Also still got Pikmin 3 and the Animal Crossing board game sealed and unplayed, but I doubt I'll ever get the enthusiasm to play them.

Zelda looks good but what was shown (Zelda meets Far Cry) wasn't particularly groundbreaking and reused the same assets from the initial promo reveal.

Hold on, have I got this right - you're putting down BotW for reusing it's own assets from it's own reveal? Bonkers.

Wii U games are only going to go up, imo. Long term it's going to be the Dreamcast of consoles. (Tempted to say Saturn, but unlike SEGA, Nintendo tend to re-release their past titles).

It's also the end of the line for backwards combatibility, so it'll still be the best console to play Wii titles on. Perhaps hacked in future to go as back as the GC as with the original Wii.

Hop in your DeLorean, somebody already did it. The only practical problem being that the Wii U can't read GC discs, so you'll need a Wii to legally rip them or one of the rare PC DVD drives that can do it.

I meant via HDD indeed. So..GC controller access via official adapter too? Whoohoo!

I'm pretty sure  in this country you can legally "backup" your games/cd's and dvd's. There was a court case years ago (migth have been the datel thing or something) in the 90's that set this all up.

A recent decision upheld the illegality of ripping your own media. Even CD to MP3.

You can't legally rip them.

Which in effect would make emulators impossible to use then as the changes to the old copyright laws, which did allow you to legally back up something you had bought, were tweaked to make circumvention of DRM illegal back in 2003, so nobody can legally use their existing old legal rights anymore! classic legal bullshit, thanks America.
