This article is 4 months old but is this sort of stuff still going on?

That's Nintendo to a tee. Had a huge problem not being able to get 3rd parties on Wii U involved which is a massive problem, and the solution is to keep them in the dark so they can't make games for launch? I just don't get the point of the secrecy. No ones going to be able to create an equivalent console in a few months.

Yves Guillemot (or however you spell it), CEO of Ubisoft has stated several times that they have dev kits and that it's very exciting, very different and very Nintendo.

Then you get devs like Rebellion, who made one Nintendo platform game in 5 years complaining they've not received one and therefore third parties can't develop for it.

Nintendo are always secretive about their new console ever since the Elite Team of the N64 (Rare, DMA design etc) and if you're not on the list, you're not getting a dev kit. Sounds harsh, but Nintendo have plenty of first and second party developers for launc titles. Nintendo even stated that they had delayed the launch in order to get enough launch games from thei in-house team, with rumours of 10-20 Nintendo titles during the launch window (again, a problem with the Wii U that they've acknowledged was the lack of titles during the launch window). Sure, some will be enhanced ports like Splatoon and Smash Broa, but Nintendo don't need too many third party devs to make the NX a success. People buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games, which has been the case since at least the GameCube.

The problem the WiiU had was Nintendo's dev resources being split over two completely different platforms - the Wii U and 3DS. They simply couldn't get enough games out for both platforms. Nintendo have said the NX addresess this through a single development platform. What that actually physically looks like, we'll probably see in the new year. They've got the NES Mini for this Christmas ;-)

Latest rumours: http://seekingalpha.com/news/3213925-expecting-nx-console-disappointment-macquarie-cuts-nintendo-neutral

  • Running against a general recent bullish tide, Macquarie has downgraded Nintendo (OTCPK:NTDOY) to Neutral, from its previous Outperform rating.
  • A long-in-the-works revamp to the company's consoles -- the NX, coming next week -- is liable to come at a price that will result in a "major" disappointment for volume sales, the firm says.
  • Speculation is putting the price of the new console between $300 and $350, in line with competing consoles, vs. the Wii's former discount to rival boxes from Sony and Microsoft.
  • The company's move into mobile gaming, Super Mario Run, has a missed opportunity as well, Macquarie says: Being only iOS and ex-China, it's missing 60% of the market.
  • The firm cut its price target on Nintendo to ¥25,900 from a previous ¥27,300, implying some fractional downside from today's closing price of ¥26,075.

Nintendo missed the boat with me, we have had PS4, Xbox One, PSVR, PS4Pro and Xbox Scorpio released or announcements of release before Nintendo have announced anything about this.

I cant believe they let all that happen without any solid information, especially when so much speculation is going on, I'm committed to buying 2 PS4 Pro's on top of my PS VR now so i'll be holding off on the NX and if Scorpio has a release date and price announced before NX is out i'll be targeting that i'm sure.
