Just wanted to say that I got Super Mario Maker 2 a while ago but only got round to playing it.  This game is AMAZING - just the story player mode comes across as genius.  It's weird playing the levels from the different games, e.g. it feels like playing Super Mario World with unreleased levels.

This sounds like heresy but I've only ever played a bit of Zelda Ocarina of Time and I didn't get on with it at all.

I don't  know why - I just didn't gel. SInce then I've let each new game pass me by. Given my antipathy towards the world/gameplay back then - is it worth me giving the series on switch a punt - and if it is where should I start?

I was in a similar position when Breath of the Wild came out. I loved the old 2D Zelda games but I never got into Ocarina or any of the other story focused games that followed. I’m glad I gave BotW a punt though. I think it’s the greatest single player game I’ve ever played. Definitely give it a try - if you buy physical you’re unlikely to lose money if you decide to sell it on.

Does anyone know if the Nintendo Switch Online emulation is any good for Snes/N64 games?

I gather they offer the full speed 60hz versions, and they have fixed some N64 issues since release. Just fancy a bit of wave race and 1080 snowboarding (when they eventually release it).

SNES is fine, N64 is not an issue unless you're really into authenticity and are super sensitive to stuff - most people aren't so it'll be the most convenient way to play on a modern TV.

Remap your buttons or get an N64 classic controller.

I have a load of fun with it, no issues playing on a 8bitdo Pro2. But I check literally every day on the My Nintendo store for that N64 controller. Every day. I really want to use it but am not paying eBay scumbag prices

Good to hear.

I wouldn’t normally sub to a service with so few games, but they seem to be adding higher quality titles to the service recently, and the fact I can access Mario kart booster levels and the splatoon 2 expansion in addition to the old retro stuff makes it appealing enough to justify the £35 asking price.

The only issues I had with the N64 emulation (other than the noticible input lag of Ocarina of Time which has apparently been patched since) was that the JoyCon stick is too sensitive, making games where subtle adjustments matter (F-Zero X, Pilotwings 64) a little trickier than they're intended to be. I do have the N64 pad but I can never be bothered getting it out since I mainly play handheld.

Pilotwings has an improved framerate, which is great but one side effect is that flapping Birdman's wings requires a pretty rapid mashing of the A button, which kinda ruins the relaxing vibe of that mode.

Oh, and F-Zero X has (not game-breaking) slowdown that wasn't an issue in the original version.

NES and SNES have been perfect as far as I can tell.

yeah nintendo's stock is fucking abysmal, i'm still furious about the xenoblade and bayonetta farces. they just make it so hard for people to give them money.

Thanks to some gold points and 75% off in the sale I managed to pick up Ori and the Will of the Wisps for like £1.70. Looks spectacular on the OLED screen™️ .

I watched a digital foundry video on how they got it running so well (60fps targeting native resolution handheld/900p docked), which is pretty interesting when they detail the different techniques they used.

"Single player games" is a broad, rich vein! A few platform genre highlights off the top of my head:

Triangle Strategy is a surprisingly fantastic SRPG

Xenoblade Chronicles (1, 2 or 3) is the best JRPG series on the system; though it's hard to say which to go for as everyone seems to have a different preference

Ace Attorney trilogy still holds up as one of the best sets of visual novels written

Streets of Rage 4 is a glorious scrolling beat-em-up

Celeste is the best 2D platformer ever made

Shin Megami Tensei V is the best dungeon-crawler on Switch

Sayonara Wildhearts is a wonderful music/avoid-em-up game

If you didn’t have a Wii U then you should get Mario 3D World as you seem to like Mario games.

And if you did then you should still consider it for Bowser's Fury.

"Single player" is very broad - the console has been available for many years! - but here are some exclusives that people might have forgotten about:

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Astral Chain

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Wonderful! This is a great spread of suggestions. I will do some research from this list and will pick a couple up.

Looking for a positive of being ill - as an adult I find it difficult to invest time into a new game but this is a perfect opportunity to try some
