I doubt this is true. Lots of that proprietary tech is the type that winds up being licensed from other companies like Nvidia. Eventually, those licenses expire or the company owning them goes bankrupt, putting those licenses in limbo.

As an example: the N64 and the NGC were technically developed by the same people but under different corporate names, so the licensing and trademarks of a lot of the tech is with different rights holders despite having been made by exactly the same people. As a result Nintendo cannot easily re-release the original hardware as is because they'd have to draw up new agreements.

It also mean that when certain agreements expire, the platform holder will have to find different ways around bringing over older games from that system. Pilotwings 64 being an example of this as well because its co-developer went bankrupt and helped keep it of of other platforms alongside the earlier mentioned tech issues.

Even in that scenario Nintendo have the option of writing a cheque to AMD, HP or whoever which is something the amateur developers simply can't do.

Even if the N64 emulation was the best in class I'd probably still drop down to the lower tier when my subscription is up for renewal. I haven't bothered with what's on there already and the list of announced stuff, which will probably take us up to E3 next year, doesn't hold much appeal for me.

Wondering if anybody has any advice or pointers for me. I have a Switch Lite; owned it for a few years, never exactly hammered it constantly, usually playing it quite hard for a specific game then not really touching it for a while...you know the drill when you have multiple consoles and little gaming time.

Anyway, I remember being impressed with how well it held charge during sleep mode and how the battery had barely lost anything weeks after having being left alone.

Now, however, I feel that it just loses remaining charge and drops down to zero within around a week and I swear it takes so much longer to charge than it used to. Anybody else experienced this with theirs, or know if there's any sort of "trick" I can do to reset the battery's condition? I'd understand if this was an ancient piece of hardware but, like I say, it's only a few years old and hasn't been used overly-extensively.

Ok. This will have been asked many a time. Any good shouts for upgrading to the full Nintendo online package other than paying direct?

I find their packages so confusing. Both my kids play on the Switch with limited online stuff but I’m keen to get the Mario Kart tracks and some N64 classics too (I skipped the N64 in favour of a PC and Counterstrike).

Yeah I think you can only get the expansion pack from Nintendo only, I can't see it anywhere.

Which means he has two choices:

Either get a sub then add the expansion pack from Nintendo direct, or forget about the N64 classics and just buy the Mario Kart extra pack thing separately (at least it'll be permanent).

Buy the family sub from a reputable, competitively priced reseller; wait for your current sub to expire; add the sub(s) to your account; convert to family plus expansion, which will be discounted converted at a rate of 0.08p per day you have remaining active, meaning you have paid less overall for the end product.

Not the most straightforward method I’m sure you’ll agree.

Being old and slow at getting/playing through things is fucking brilliant. I finished Luigi's Mansion 3 today* and then started Nier which seems promising although I'm worried it may expose my infirmities - I very nearly failed to reach the first save point alive after playing for an hour or so. Maybe I'm missing something.

* It felt curiously ancient to see 2019 on the title screen and realise it predated The Disease.

You can’t add a family sub while you have a family sub plus expansion active. You’ll have to wait for it to expire.

But @SMD said I’m an edge case. How can that be?

(thanks, I’ll wait)

Got any spare space on that family sub? Happy to chuck you some coins ;)

I do, pretty sure I can see your purchases and activity if you join it though? I certainly see my family’s.

I’m not fussed, I only tend to buy physical releases anyway 😂

and even then… all I play online is Tetris 99 😳

Thanks everyone (and sorry for the tedium). I’ve just looked again and I’m not sure I understand the family plan options. My kids each have a profile on my original switch. I was thinking of getting the family plan to avoid the “Checking that I can play this digital game” thing that happens on second consoles.

Would it stop that?

No it will let kids accounts play online on their account on a different Switch to the main Switch (which is set as your primary with online membership) but it still won’t share purchases from your account on a different machine with different accounts on said second machine.

I find it’s essential if you have multiple machines (we have um six now but only four actually in regular use - mine, Missus, eldest and youngest) and they can all go online but the kids can only play digital games on their profile on my (primary) OLED.

The solution i have found is basically but everything physical and/or 2 copies as required.

Got a perfect score on all of Pilotwings 64's missions (using save states) and had a great time. Was gonna move onto some of the other N64 games, maybe finish my playthrough of Winback, but I reckon I'll just dive right back it and play it again without the save states. Maybe get some headphones on and birdman around.

Played it all in handheld mode with no issues, unlike F-Zero X which feels wildly sensitive when not using an N64 controller. Jumble Hopper was trickier though. Making what I felt were subtly adjustments would fling me off 270° to the left, scudding off a cliffside.

Pilotwings 64 is fantastic. They’ve done a great job emulating it.

I appreciate how it looks, in its emulated form, how it looks in your nostalgic memories, rather than the actual N64’s smear-o-vision – seeing all the small details of the various islands with a decree of visual clarity really helps the whole experience.
