Once it becomes big on mobile you could use it anywhere for all manner of applications.

What do you mean by this? VR on mobile?

Are people really doubting VR's staying power and inevitable popularity?

The porn industry has embraced it. You have no more say in the matter.

Bit weird though isn't it? You jizz everywhere, and then try to clean up before you get any spunk near your precious VR helmet. Just sounds messy.

Galactica at Alton Towers uses Galaxy S6's and 7's as displays.  It works pretty well to although that is mostly down to the clever software doing the streaming.

That's not an everyday, mainstream application though, is it? I was just wondering why he thought VR would go mainstream when it comes to mobile. If that's what he was meaning.

The NX platform was mentioned way before that, add to that all the rest of the speculation and rumours.

It all started with the announcement of their deal with DeNA in March 2015, which otherwise would have been an indication that Nintendo were going full mobile so they had to reveal its existence at that point in time. It certainly wasn't the main focus of that particular announcement, just an aside.

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Without the DeNA deal happening at that time, I doubt they would have even mentioned the existence of the NX quite so early.  Speculation and rumours are generated by people who don't know stuff in the main, some people even manage to continue speculating and generating rumours when facts are available proving them wrong :P

It's built into Android now.

What's built into Android, VR? What does that even mean?

I've tried Google Cardboard and all it does is split the screen in half to show two images. It's massively underwhelming. Why would that need to be built in at OS level?

And I'm still confused about Stanley's original quote. How is VR on mobile going to make it mainstream? You'd still need to wear some kind of headgear, but even more fiddly if you're having to insert your phone, and why would anyone walk around like that? You'd be run over or battered, or both probably, in seconds.

Well you wouldn't fucking walk around outside with it would you for Christ's sake.

Er, no. I thought that seemed mental. What were you on about then?

There's a project-something-or-other built into Android recently that supports positional tracking and all this other stuff that's important for AR and VR without needing base stations. (Imagine a Galaxy Gear, but with movement and not just rotation.) The first phones supporting it should be announced soonish.

It's hard isn't it to think of any situation in which a mobile headset would be more comfortable, portable and convenient.

Well, yeah. You still have to put an exclusionary headset on. What's all this mobile stuff you're on about? Actual mobile phones, or just a 'mobile' headset. By which I think you mean not tethered by wires. I don't know man. I just asked for an explanation, rather than all this second guessing nonsense?

Ah, thanks Alex. I'm not sure how this makes it more inclusionary for people though, or if Google are even envisioning it as a gaming device.

Maybe you can tell me what Stanley is on about.

What he should have said was "you can use your phone as a screen and processing unit, then you don't need to buy any peripherals or a computer for VR, increasing the potential audience as most people have a smartphone already", instead he said something unclear involving the ambiguous term "mobile" (prefix for phones, moving around).
