I think it's a perception thing. And it's very hard to turn that sort of stuff around in peoples minds. It has hurt them in the past and it will hurt them now too. Unless it's some technical marvel. Personally I think £300 is too expensive. And given the current state of this countr, er I mean the £, that's likely what it'll be.

Of course this is all likely to be fake anyway. We/consumers/the industry badly need Nintendo to announce solid details on the damn thing.

If it's going to restore confidence now then it'll restore confidence at the end of the year. There's nothing stopping anyone from saving up for it now as they've said when it's coming. If someone is already thinking about a PS4/Xbox or an NX then they'll be waiting to March regardless. You might also cannibalise the sales of Wii U/3DS for Christmas no matter how low they may be.

People are being impatient. That's it.

Impatient! They've been talking about NX for about 18 months and still no one knows what it is.

They've stopped production of Wii U haven't they? So I don't see how they're cannibalising sales. Are there even any games left still to be released?

Everyone expected an announcement at E3, and a launch this year. It doesn't really inspire confidence.

They've hardly been talking about it for 18 months. They mentioned its existence only to assure people that they were still in the hardware business. They've not said a lot about it since.

Funny how the Wii U is focused on there rather than the 3DS. Wii U production may be stopped, but they'll still need to sell through stock. Paper Mario just came out on Friday. Apart from Zelda, I don't know what else is coming and it doesn't really matter either. They're not going to want to be sitting on tons of unsold hardware.

A non-announcement at E3 has nothing to do with confidence in the slightest. I want to see what the NX is myself, but I think the complaints around the reveal just come across as being entitled.

That word 'entitled' is thrown around quote liberally these days. Perhaps they shouldn't have mentioned it at all and then people wouldn't be getting so frustrated at their non announcement.

Then they'd be complaining about Nintendo abandoning hardware.

They were stating their outlook for the upcoming financial year and essentially had to acknowledge the console's existence given that it would launch in that year. They did so with the bare minimum of acknowledgement they could get away with, which I reproduce in its entirety:

For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX” with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally.

People are acting like it's a slap in the face for Nintendo to have sidestepped the three-ring-circus of fanboy baiting that characterises Microsoft and Sony's hardware events.

Well yeah if you want to pretend you're living in a world where information is all compartmentalised and that bit was for shareholders and not general consumption.

All rumours point to the platform being delayed, either because the hardware wasn't ready, the software, or both.

My point isn't that the information was for shareholders, my point is that Nintendo's not going to move up its entire promotional schedule for the console because it has to give a one-sentence mention of the machine as part of its financial obligations.

IIRC the NES, Super Nintendo and N64 were not cheap consoles. The N64 did launch at a cheaper RRP than the PS and Saturn, but it also launched significantly later and was more expensive than the PS by that time.

Gamecube and Wii were cheap, but they are the exceptions, not the rule.

I agree, I think they should aim low, but they're probably banking on the desirability of what ever the console's killer feature is, and future-proofing the specs. Simply making a cheap, accessible console failed them with the Gamecube and the Wii's success was largely a fad. VR is the new motion control and Nintendo aren't competing in that race, or the visual arms race, so what's left? I think they're fudged, because none of the leaked information is very exciting and while I want to play their software, it'll be in spite of any hardware they release, rather than because of it.

Banking on a killer feature/game justifying the price fucked them over with the Wii U/3DS. They've acknowledged that, so I find it hard to believe that they'd do it again.

They mentioned they were making a new console a couple of times. I'm not sure that really rises to announcing a new machine and then going radio silent or whatever you're accusing them of.

They announced NX as a platform a long, long time ago. It's not the end of the world, but I was certainly disappointed we didn't get an E3 reveal. If that makes me entitled then so be it.
