Yeah the reaction has definitely been overblown, there are definitely issues but theres no way that any of these games are unplayable. I think the main issue is with the huge jump in price, so if it was anything less than perfect people were going to complain.

Mine too and I agree. But man they went overboard with the packaging. A box inside a box inside a Mario lined box!

the packaging is insane and made me cross, so much cardboard and plastic - insanely wasteful.

is there any way of getting rid of the text at the bottom of the screen saying what the + or - button do in the N64 games ?

I wish they hadn't even done that. N64 games running at native res with a bit of blur look so much better than the pin-sharp emulated look.

General consensus here is that the emulation is worse than it was on the Wii U, which in turn is worse than it was on the Wii, and all three are worse than fan-made projects that have been available for ten years or more.

Oh no it's way better than the wiiu emulation. Controls aren't fucked on some games and it isn't horribly dark.

I mean, what to make of it?

It’s fine I suppose, I haven’t even tried Mario 64 having bought and completed it with the Allstars pack, is it the same version as that used here?

As for Ocarina, it seems to run fine, but knowing there’s a better version out there in the form of OoT 3D puts me off a little.

Also I’d have preferred if they released the games in order they were released on the system, so Wave Race and Pilot Wings before Ocarina or Yoshi’s Story, which whilst OK is one of the weaker Yoshi games.

I’m actually enjoying the Megadrive games more at the moment, they seem to be emulated well and SoR2 is as good as it always was, and Sonic 2 is a lot of fun.

What gets me with this service is the same problem I had with the SNES and NES games; the slow drip feed of games with no schedule to their releases. So then as now you’re better off waiting until the catalogue is full and complete before shelling out for it, day one just feels like a rip off for the paltry amount of games they’re offering for your sixty quid.

Pretty easy this Yoshi game but the music is so good

It’s just so underwhelming compared to Yoshi’s Island, which I think even visually looks better than Yoshi’s Story. It has a bit of a sterile look in comparison, just lacks that creative spark and look YI had.

I don’t mind the staggered release as Im more likely to play each game properly rather than them dumping the whole library at once and playing games for 10 minutes before switching to the next one. But the complete lack of communication and the pace that they are releasing games is a massive problem. If we had a release schedule for 6 months to a year we can at least have something to look forward to instead of just dumping some obscure games that nobody really wanted with no fanfare. The SNES and NES libraries have been going for 3 years now and theres still a lot that is missing compared to the Wii VC service.

I can’t believe I lost to this scum.

That game has so many great quotes. Still brilliant to play. Also it looks really sharp thanks to the up rez. People really are going way over the top with issues. I am happily playing some Zelda and it looks perfecty fine.

I’m not going to pay for the expansion (as I just renewed my family subscription literally two days before the Nintendo 64 and Mega Drive games were announced, so that’ll be sixty quid down the drain), but I have to admit I’d be more likely to play the MD games rather than the N64 ones… I mean, I’ve always preferred the Super NES to the Mega Drive, and the Nintendo 64 had some of the most astonishing gaming moments ever when it was new, but I have to admit even by 2002 I found the N64 games rather technically dated. I don’t want to spoil my fond memories of the system at its peak.

anyone get their N64 pad yet? says due today but according to the tracking its still awaiting pickup.

I have mine. The email said it would be 3 or 4 days, but the actual tracking link showed Next Day, and Steve from DPD was here about 1:30-ish. A Facebook friend of mine is in the same boat as you, though. Sadly, Nintendo support is SERCO, even though stock comes from The Hut Group, so they will most likely tell you they can't check up on it for 72 hours.

This is the annoyance for Star Fox too. Both OOT and Star Fox were really good ports, sad that again they have been effectively lost to the sands of time.

Yes, I know we can play them on the 3DS but these days you kinda expect most new systems to have decent backwards compatibility. I mean, so far the Series X is nothing but a backwards compatible machine (and I'm really enjoying it!).

Upgraded my subscription, love the MD titles and only tried Starfox and Sin and Punishment and they seem fine if very sharp visually, just takes a while to get used to playing them on the handheld control setup. I think I'll really enjoy playing all of these with save states too.

I tried to use ZL to fire in Sin and Punishment and it melted my brain because that's the shift mode to put the face buttons as the N64 camera buttons :D....ZR is fine

Yeah it’s frustrating, and no doubt we’ll eventually get the Zelda remaster with new assets etc. and perhaps Star Fox too, and it is nice to have access to the originals being preserved in this way, but still, I’m sure it wouldn’t have taken too much effort to do both - those 3DS versions are themselves about ten years old now.

My N64 controller just arrived; at work so haven't used it with any games yet but the stick is fairly stiff, gives a fair bit of resistance before it even moves at all. I remember brand-new N64 sticks were stiff too so this might be exactly the same and it's just been so long I can't remember.

I found the aiming far too sensitive in Operation Winback so hopefully this sorts that issue for me (I'd already changed the aiming to Slow in the options menu). It'll definitely sort the issue of the unwanted right stick "up" inputs changing my weapons now it'll be on the C-buttons.

You receive a pro-rata discount against the cost of the Family Membership + Expansion based on the amount of time your existing membership has to run. So you'd only pay the difference between the normal Family Membership and the Expansion.

oh look at that...

So people shat their knickers over nothing. I had a feeling that there wasn't a problem because the effect the N64 uses for fogging is present in starfox and earlier parts of OOT and it's perfectly fine. What's happened is that the image is brighter so it's easier to see things.

EDIT: Well apparently not. The left image is taken from the WiiU emulation of OOT (I wondered why it was very dark). So that emulation is actually worse that the switch online version. Quite why there is a fog issue in this particular area is odd.
