Maybe I've been spoiled by Blizzard, and even Square Enix, for keeping my MMO characters for seemingly forever. 🤷‍♂️

Are there any homebrew tools for exporting saves with a hacked Switch?

Nope, you MUST have a hackable console to use homebrew I'm afraid.

Great! So it's possible, then?

It's also really funny how they're still willing to keep the records of your play time for each title as well as your purchase history and personal account information, but don't want to grant you the few KBs of space it takes to store the save data for said titles. This is primarily an effort to stop a second-hand sale while also losing a sub.

Oh yes, if you have a hacked console, you can back up saves, transfer them about etc, but then you rnu the risk of getting hit with a ban hammer at some point.

I'll take it. Once this sub expires in a year, of course. Cheers!

I'll also be able to Digitally Remaster all of my games at the same time. Bonus.

Did I hear correctly that joycon fixes are free even out of warranty?

I have an original launch model with grey joycons that have horrendous stick drift to the point we don't use them anymore and just use pro controller. Now we have an OLED I can use the OLED joycons on the launch switch if I need to so I can send off the old grey ones for repair!

So am I correct and repair should be free?

The kids nicked my switch about three years ago after I finished Zelda. I just plugged it back into my TV and holy moly that UI and GFX interface looks fugly by modern standards.

Nintendo really need to get their asses in gear and get a 4K switch out there as this is looking pretty long in the tooth.

I have organised mine to be fixed (launch neon left Joycon) and I am dropping them off tomorrow at my local UPS collection point.  From what I can gather it is free but can take some time.

They've confirmed there are no other Switches planned. I'm sure their next console will be 4K.

They also confirmed there was no “handheld only” Switch just prior to the announcement of the Switch Lite, and confirmed there was no “upgraded hardware” the same week the Switch OLED was announced.

See also “no new GBA” just before the Micro, and “no revised DS” literally a few hours before the DS Lite.

They’re at in interesting crossroads, Nintendo, I think. Will the next console simply be a upgraded 4K Switch, a Switch 2, or will it be something else entirely?

With the success of the Switch I can’t see them deviating from the path too much, but will simply upgrading the Switch be enough to differentiate it from the older models?

Super Nintendo Switch pls.

Similar format, more power. Plays switch games plus shiny new stuff to take advantage of the improved hardware.

Not going to happen for a few years yet while ninty milk as much as they can out the current version though is it?

6 months after your sub lapses is the norm; it’s the same on PSN and I think it was the case for XBL Gold on 360. I don’t know of any cloud services that agree to hold your data permanently after you stop paying.

I still have Cloud saved on Steam for games I haven’t played for 12 years and they’ve never charged me for it. Why do people always make excuses for Nintendo?

Deleting your saves after 180 days is shit.

Yeah, they’ve never charged you for it.

Edit - This isn’t a discussion I’m particularly interested in having because the stakes are so low and it’s just part of a bigger problem that there’s no way to stash your Switch saves off-console, but:

Generally speaking if someone charges you to store something, and you stop paying, after a certain amount of time they throw it out.

Have Nintendo allowed storage to SD cards yet or is it still cloud only to keep saves backed up off the console? While since I had my Switch but remember not being able to backup game saves anywhere but internal memory and the cloud service.

And agree people should stop making excuses for Nintendo. Really if they aren't going to allow backup of games to a memory card off the console then at least the cloud storage should be free for at least a little bit of storage space.

I know Nintendo Online is cheap compared to other online services but its the principal that you have no other options.

I don’t think Nintendo and Sony are really competent to run cloud services at that kind of scale; when you’re talking about things as piddly as game saves the problem scales per user, not per kilobyte, and there are a lot of potential users.

PSN and Switch Online subs may be as much a control valve on the complexity of the online business they need to run, as they are an actual revenue stream.

Agree to a point but looking at the revenue they get in from the sales etc I still think they could give say 1/2GB space to everyone gratis. Sure you get more if you sub.

In the end it is what it is but its not great that Nintendo gives no other option of backing up your game saves other than console memory. I mean of you put 100s of hours into a game and the machine dies your saves will die with it. Unless you pay of course.

Anyhow just think there should be a half way mark where some storage is offered for free. Even if they ran a loyalty system where you register your games and you get a 100MB or something. I don't know.

I guess in my mind it’s a choice between a working glossy cloud service for only the 5% of their customers who subscribe, or everyone getting at least an entry level offering but with the traditional Sony and Nintendo level of online competence.

In pragmatic terms it doesn’t make a difference, it’s still Less Good than the more online companies’ full cloud-native offerings, obviously. But where other people see mean-spirited mendacity and get angry about it I see two companies building a firebreak around their proven capacity to fuck up and am quietly grateful that they have that level of self awareness.

Indeed good point.

Think the whole lack of being able to use a memory card thing it because I assume Nintendo know it will be a weak point and something hackers can latch onto ergo avoid as much piracy as possible. Always a balance I guess.

Nintendo people! I have bought a Switch for my kids for Christmas, now knowing them they will wreck the joy cons. So I want to buy a couple more controllers, and have a couple of questions.

Are the pro controllers good? They seem to be the highest rated and I know they aren’t joy cons but they look pretty hardy.

Are the 8bitdo controllers any good? Same as above really.

I won’t really be gameing much, though I kind of fancy THPS for old times sake so they will be mostly used for things like SM Kart etc

Thanks!

I’m interested to see where they will go when cloud gaming fully takes off. At that point it would seem like an obvious time for platform uniformity to arrive i.e. I assume there will be less or no distinct hardware.

I can vouch for the 8bitDo SN30 pro plus, it's very comfortable with the only downside being a slightly creaky dead.

EDIT: Of course, I mean dpad. At least I think I do.

Yeah these are very nice. Very close to first party quality.
