It isn't a simple process, at least not as simple as how they described at the e3 reveal, the evidence being that some games run like shit (Halo Reach pre-patch). They test each game which takes time, and they need approval from publishers for 3rd party games.

The library of games in backwards compatibility will continue to grow, though, which is great for us. I'm absolutely loving my playthrough of Red Dead Redemption on Xbox One.

I'd say marketing, at a guess. Drip feeding them like this keeps the feature fresh in people's minds and allows them to make key titles available at certain times thoughout the year. It also allows them to hype upcoming games by making the earlier versions available on BC.

Maybe I'm misremembering though and they do have to do extensive work on each game.

The evidence all points to individual titles needing some level of human intervention to get working, Mirror's Edge, which wasn't released to coincide with any sequel which might happen to be launching or even to sway people to order the X1 version still has some weird emulation problem at present, which would indicate you can't just dump an ISO into the emulator and call it a day, so even if hackers manage to crack the Xbox One and free the emulator from all legal restrictions, you'll find that it, like Nintendo's own internal VC emulators aren't anywhere near 100% compatible for more challenging hardware.

The only person who works at Microsoft to ever give away anything about how it all works indicated it isn't a traditional emulator, they do some form of native recompiling of the actual game exe code, which would explain how they got it to run at that level of performance when the target system is of comparable CPU power:

Digital Foundry: The existing Xbox 360 Gears titles come to Xbox One via backwards compatibility - is this essentially the exact same code, or is there any kind of conversion or optimisation process involved?

Mike Rayner: It is essentially the exact same code. The Xbox team converts the 360 game and 360 flash PPC executables into native x64 executables, packages those up with the 360 game assets, 360 flash and emulator as a regular Xbox One game, and publishes it.

Yeah, that's true about Mirrors Edge. I can imagine they wanted that out around the same time as Catalyst.

Your second point says that Gears is the exact same code though and they just packaged it up and threw it at the emulator, unless I'm missing something.

Like I said originally though, I can imagine a few games will need tinkering with, as seen in the case of Mirrors Edge.

He said the code is essentially the same, but then says the exe has to be recompiled to run natively on x86 using the data from the original X360 PowerPC version, a traditional emulator doesn't do that, the nearest you get to that is dynamic recompilation.

I'd love somebody from the emulation team to lift the lid on it as it's quite fascinating as a technology implementation. I'm also curious as to whether the fact the X1 and X360 share some hardware similarities has helped in any way as this would affect future portability for this solution.

Totally pumped for this now.......says something in the current climate of psvr, ps4 pro, 6gflops Microsoft consoles, HDR, 1080gpus that the most exciting gaming kit is the relatively underpowered portable tablet based Nintendo thing :)

bring it the fuck on !

Recompiling source for a different target is a click of a button. I'd imagine there is still human effort involved to see if the game runs on and tweaks to the emulator packaged with the game if it needs it.

Yeah the tricky bit for the MS team was finding the right button. They've got it now though and they've drawn a red circle around it.

With hardly any thirdparty support, and a trickle of Nintendo exclusives*, its like the Wii U all over again, but with new peripherals to buy.

* every one of these will star Mario, even if it is a survival horror.

"Kevin Periera” has admitted to trolling. He was apparently teasing his appearance at the expo (for the sixth year running - big tease) and went along with the NX thing when forums jumped on it.

Are you telling me Nintendo weren't revealing the NX at the gamestop expo the week of tgs

Hello forum!

This week I bought a hdmi splitter so I can use my monitor with other stuff apart from the PC

I had not connected the WII U in more than a year. Suddenly I got a fresh taste of it.

I just wish the NX is the opposite of the  WII U, the WII U feels too complicated and awkward. With so many different controllers and settings. And the controller feels heavy.

I hope the NX does not try to please everyone. That was probably the main fault of the WII U. The Wii U should remain as a sort of legacy console, and let the NX stand alone.

Just sayin

I like the look of this.

nx-mock-6.jpg

I've got a sneaky suspicion the screen/controller will be phone sized and the console will be the size of an Apple TV.  I actually like the Wii U controller although it is really, really chunky.

If Breath of The Wild is an NX release, it's going to be a fairly powerful handheld and that will be fine by me. I do think it's a massive shame that Zelda only gets a release at the end of the Wii U lifecycle as it seems that it was built around the Wii U controller and a lot of people won't get to play it.

3rd party support (other than Ubisoft ports that weren't much fun and the Batman game that I didn't enjoy that much) was definitely an issue for a lot of people but it generally wasn't an issue for me as I felt it had enough games and the games I played, I played for a long time - I'm still playing Splatoon. I'm probably in the minority in that I hate COD games and I'm not into Forza or any of the AAA titles that get released on the Xbox/Playstation. The only game I'd loved to have seen on the Wii U is GTA V but I don't honestly believe the Nintendo Execs would have allowed it even if it was possible.   Nintendo needed a genre they don't really make well like a Sandbox title - GTA IV or a Crackdown or a Just Cause 2. With decent 3rd party support, they might have got that.

Whatever Nintendo make, if they market it like the Wii U was marketed, they won't sell very many at all.  I wasn't aware the Wii U was a new console at first as I missed all the E3 stuff and wasn't taking much notice.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the NX.

Rumors are either a press conference will be today ( bit short notice)  or anytime up to the 23Rd.

Retailers have been invited to a Nintendo event in Germany. Platinum have said it has news today although they have revealed a new amiibo so it could just be that.

The Platinum news is just regarding some secret shops in the game, no? Woo..

After Nintendo's surprise appearance at the Apple event, I'd of thought a NX info share would be just round the corner.. However, I'm ready to believe that Nintendo's corners are extremely bendy..

Anything of note over there - so I don't have to visit? What are the latest (unrealistic) rumours?

Well this Nightmare Before Christmas X NX thang was pretty good

and a Pokeman said this

“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device,” said Mr. Ishihara.
