How many people care though? How many are buying 4K Blu Rays or paying for 4K on Netflix etc? They just want a big tv.

I think plenty care not that the price is well within reach and 4K is more or less ubiquitous in the TV market. It might not be that 4K is the driving force but once they have it, it’s inevitable that they’ll want more things that can show what their telly can do and as far as Nintendo goes, the uptake of PS4 pro’s and XB1X’s show that people care. They’ll just bring it along later and cheaper because the tech is cheap.

Plenty of 'Gamers' care.

I'm not sure 'People' care.

People were buying 720p/1080p flatscreens years back because of the size and how they looked. And then watching 4:3 SD content stretched to 16:9.

'People' don't care.

Under no circumstances can I see Nintendo doing 4K this gen. Just won't happen.

I can see them doing a Switch with a 1080p screen that is simply clocked so that it can run in 'docked mode' whilst portable so everything 'just works'. Then In docked mode, that might lead to rez boost/frame rate boost, to 1440p of 60Fps 'for select new titles' - but they won't go back to previous games and update them - or if they do, it will be a couple of their evergreen titles, Odyssey, Mario Kart, etc.

Frankly, knowing nintendo, the only part of the PS5 and XSX they'll be jealous off is the speed of loading due to SSDs. They (rightly) hate loading with a passion, it pushes away the average joe.  But I can't see them jumping on that until prices fall.

Nintendo have the perfect form factor for them now with the switch - they next switch will be a power boost and some things ironed out, but it will be 100% fully backwards compatible... and it'll be a few itterations before original switch software stops working.  It'll be more like iphones.

What are the odds on being able to take digital purchases with you?

They've at least sorted out moving purchases to other machines - and they've replaced virtual console purchases with online subscription - so I'd imagine they'd be pretty high.

If a more powerful switch comes out, that offers say, Doom Eternal with higher framerate and less 'auto-blur' that took all my purchased games - I'd be all over it.  Suspect as it is just now, you won't be able to run them on the older device at the same time though (as it is just now)

stable (min 30) 60 fps would be nice. 1080p is great. 720p is lovely on the switch screen. There's no need for 4k, and it just maxes out the processors. This is PC-world's game.

I say this writing from a Macbook pro that is needlessly driving a 4K screen. The fans come on all the time, and I have actually ordered a 1440p screen to lighten the load.

I think there is, there was a market for 4K consoles in 2016 and 2017 and beyond with the pro and one x.

But then those were outsold considerably by the base consoles, because they’re cheaper and they do what people want, MS have even released a HD only version of their new next generation consoles for that exact reason; price is everything.

I mean this isn’t like back in the late 2000’s when the Wii was looking bad on HD screens, most modern tv’s do a really good job of upscaling and the games look fine, obviously there are outliers and curios such as Witcher 3 and Doom Eternal on Switch which can look a bit fuzzy in docked mode but then you can also play them in handheld mode - so there has to be a trade off.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Nintendo it’s that they are reactive rather than proactive, they will release a more powerful console when the market demands it - just as they released Switch Lite to plug the gap left in the handheld market by the 3DS. And that’s the reason I don’t think it will be this year, the regular Switch is still selling extremely well and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon.

The handheld screen can be whatever but I’d love the Switch to play in 1440 docked.

The Series S is ten times the size of Switch, it has a fan as bigger than the switch. It was released a month ago and runs off the mains. I

It can't do 4K

There is no way in hell, Nintendo will release a portable console that out performs it as a mid gen bump to the Switch.

Hell I doubt the real next gen Nintendo console manages to get close.  I

Not comparing like with like. There are phones that do 4k. They aren't more powerful than the series s.

It won't be native 4k if it happens anyway. Some sort of dlss type of deal.

If you think Nintendo are targeting the same market as the people that bought those consoles, you really haven’t been paying attention.

I don’t know how many times they literally have to say it out loud for a start.

That said, who ever really knows with Nintendo though eh.

Those phones can cost a thousand pounds. Nintendo want people to buy these for children.

Sure they might do some nice upscaling trick, but I'm thinking they will target 1080p for the rest of this gen. Like they did with the Wii hanging on in SD land whilst the PS3 and 360 joined  HDville.

What I love with Nintendo is that they could literally decide anything.

Like I wouldn't be surprised if there next console, was an actual television.

I dunno, some weird TV for your kids room, that lets them play remotely with their friends. It moves around like a fucking Segway and mirrors your friend at home with theirs (which is mirroring you). It uses AR to link the two bedrooms together and shit. Tying together everything they've learn't for Mario Kart Live, Lego Mario and Ring Fit.

Then they'ld do something nuts, like make it so the TV can't play actual TV. And you have to type a 1000 letter friend code in each time you use it to keep predators at bay.

I’m not denying that they weren’t the most popular option, I’m saying there’s a market for them and that they made money.

With pretty much anything there’s money to be made on selling a more expensive, better featured version. It’s probably why the regular switch still outsells the switch lite, for example.

Absurd comparison. My iPhone does 4K and and is a fraction of the size of a series S.

Because Nintendo don’t chase the Sony/MS market. It’s mad that people think that they’ll abandon their family market to chase ‘gamers’ in their 4K set ups who don’t give a toss about Nintendo consoles as it doesn’t have the best version of COD running on it.

Nintendo will go 4k once its cheap as to do so and once their core market has adopted it.
