It's partly explained by the fact that there's barely a PS5 anywhere - my local used shop has a digital one for which they want 97,000 plus tax.  Other shops are selling a few to customers chosen at random in a lottery until January 31st.  The Xbox Series is even rarer.

There have been many months when it was hard to find a Switch - the Lite, not so much - but they available now.

The next gen console launches in Japan seem to have been a case of just halfheartedly getting a small number of consoles out there so they could technically say they launched in Japan. Don't think there's been a single xbox restock since release and I suspect the launch day number of units was utterly tiny too. PS5 stock too is clearly in significantly smaller numbers here than in the UK/US. The transformation of Japan from what seemed to be the centre of gaming until the mid 2000s to a total afterthought now is interesting.  Also, Japan's a bit of a scalper's paradise whenever any in demand item releases.

Still though, shortages or not, for the mainstream here, gaming is Switch and free to play mobile grinds during your commute.

I think it's fair to say that nowadays there's a major difference in console gamer age demographics between Japan and Europe/America. A whole lot of Japanese adults are content with mobile games. In my experience, a Japanese teen/adult even owning a PS4 etc is usually a fairly accurate sign that they're a fairly "hardcore" gamer/fan of western aaa games. The other teens/adults have their phone games and all kids and Monster Hunter fans have a switch. Not sure where the gal game otaku adults moved after vita, but I'd guess Switch and mobile again.

I noticed Switches are selling on Amazon for £324 yesterday, which is well above RRP. Sold out on Nintendo’s own website, so I guess this is the pandemic once again driving up demand and, as a result, prices.

Here we are more than 3 and a half years into the Switch’s lifespan and it’s still selling like hot cakes. Crazy.

Greatest. Game. Ever.

I agree. Got it for the Wii U but if any game deserves a 2nd playthrough, it's BotW.

First impressions are that it looks and feels considerably better on the Switch. I'm getting the same warm, fuzzy feeling exploring the plateau as I did 3 years ago on the older console.

BOTW has been my most played game this Christmas. I stopped playing the WiiU version after about 20 hours but have put 50 into the Switch version over Christmas. My only issue with it is the minimal music means that whenever I visit a stable the tune gets stuck in my head.

I’d urge BoTW fans to check out Age of Calamity, different gameplay style but so so good and fits right in there with the story, glorious game :)

I found the demo very hard to play straight after BOTW as almost every single button is different or functions differently, and it feels "off".

Don't usually have any problem swapping between various control schemes.

Yeah it’s completely different functionally but once you get used to it it’s fine.

On an impulse I have ordered a Switch Lite with BOTW and Mario Odyssey.  Over the years (am 46 now) gaming has taken a backseat to other life factors, so much so that I don't own any console or gaming PC anymore.  Not sure how much of my purchase was based on a desire to reignite those days where I loved gaming, as realistically I barely have time enough for my other hobbies let alone the time requirements of games like BOTW.  That said, I am looking forward to receiving it on the 4th :)

It will definitely make you love gaming. Botw is an absolute classic.

Odyssey will hit all the right notes for you too. Playing both of these when I got a Switch a few months ago was a pure joy (I'm 49) and has shifted the kind of games I'm playing now

You'll probably want MK8D as well after the settling in period.

Thanks for the replies :)

I am also looking at Skyrim and the Bioshock collection, I have finished them all but would enjoy a revisit.  Am hoping the Resident Evil series comes out at some point also.

I have a 6 year old daughter, are there any games on the Switch that might be suitable for her also?

Guys - Luigi's Mansion is €40 on the eshop at the moment.

First of all - recommended? Also, I've never played any of the previous entries - would that hinder any enjoyment?

Cheers!

Yes.

Absolutely not.

Must be time for the annual January Direct pretty soon, right?

And jokes aside, there actually must be a Jan/Feb Direct coming given the Feb/March releases:

12th Feb - SM3DW+BF

19th Feb - P5S (DD)

26th Feb - BDII

26th Mar - MHR

Some big initialisations there. Let's hope more to come.

Yeah, cheers Zelda. I have got to go back to work on Monday so give me a break, eh?

Ha - that is is exactly why I’ve held off getting it. I can’t keep a job down and deal with that kinda gaming anymore. I’ve come so close to buying it mind. Even just this week in fact.

How is the 2 player on this?

Is the 2nd player carried by the first (like Luigi's Mansion?) i.e. is it kid friendly?

2 player is great. Each player is equal but doesn’t matter if one is dead handy and the other hopeless. I’ve played with my 4 year old and 8 year old - we played every day for about 8 months.
It’s bloody fantastic.

Actually there’s a demo of the first level get that. We played that for a month solid before I buckled and bought that full game.

I keep bouncing off of BotW, I want to love it but I just can't get stuck in and every session feels fairly aimless. These days I bearly get any gaming time and dipping in and out of a game that size is not easy.

In other news I bought Mario Odyssey in the sale today.

Just skip to the end. Everything bar the first ten minutes and the final boss is optional.
