What happened in February that meant I didn't even play my Switch?

I knew the hours would be slightly down from normal because I've been more of a PC gamer this year. Also, quite amazing to see AoC climbing so high in such a short time, but I know for certain that Hades will best everything else before 2020 is through!

I got my 8 y/o daughter Untitled Goose Game for Christmas. She’s currently squealing with glee while making that poor gardener’s life hell.

What a lovely little game. Conceptually feels like a £2.99 cult classic on the Spectrum, back in the days when any idea was worth trying.

I have Monster Boy to play later, but I think I’m going to have to queue for a go on the Switch. I gave my wife Stardew Valley, as she’s finding AC a bit stale but misses it when she doesn’t play it. Hopefully this will push some of the same buttons. Weirdly, both our names are on the list of in-game marriage candidates.

Got Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch for christmas, and reading around was thinking about starting on Tactician difficulty which apparently offers a good challenge. Does this sound like a good idea for anyone who's played it on Switch, or do console limitations/long loading times make it even harder/more frustrating?

I spent the evening playing the Mario 3d collection, Sunshine In particular which I havent played in years. Better than I remembered but then good old Stick Drift returned and that was me done.

Also noticing the Switch is suddenly having trouble "reading" game cards. I have had to remove the card, blow on it (like the old NES trick) and that usually works.

So Just Dance has entered the house thanks to Christmas, 2021 edition.

Kids absolutely love so I looked into the Just Dance Unlimited subscription. Cost is fine but apparently if I do subscribe on the consoles main account it won't register on the kids profile! Is this right? No way I'll be subscribing twice so ubi lose out on money due to silly implementation?

Also frustrating that the four of us can't play at the same time despite it working with mobile phones as the controller. Turns out it either works with the joy cons or mobile, not a mixture of the two! Again, silly implementation.

My wife has decided to get herself a Switch Lite for a post-xmas present. I have no idea why because she won't play it, I've had a switch for years that she has never even considered playing on. Anyway... how does the family account stuff work? I have a few eshop bought games and she will buy a few. How can we both have access to them? She has read that animal crossing has some weird behaviour with this, unlike other games? I've read that in general, the setup should be similar to the xbox where one console is set as primary and you play on the other?

Also, how does buying from other country eshops work? The OP mentioned just logging on with an account from that country. So no VPN required?

Thanks in advance.

A family account just means everyone in the family plan has access to the Nintendo Online benefits like online play, cloud saves and free SNES games.

Yeah, the primary/secondary console thing works the way you think it does. You have one primary console, and anyone using that console can play your games. You have any number of secondary consoles, and you're the only one who can play your purchases on that one. So you want to play on your secondary console, and set her up with your primary console, and vice versa.

Animal Crossing has an odd thing where each console is a unique island, and each character only exists on one island. There are ways to back up the data to the cloud in case you lose your Switch, to move an entire island to another console, or move a character from one island to another, but there's no way to have the same island or character on two consoles at the same time. You'd have to live on separate islands and visit each other.

For all other games, save data will just automatically sync between consoles via the cloud. (They only very recently got it doing that but it works.)

I got about 20 hours in on the default difficulty and found it really tough going. It wasn’t the loading times that added some frustration rather it was the limited resolution in handheld when there’s a lot going on on screen. It’s not game breaking but in a big battle where it’s tough anyway I found it annoying enough that I stopped playing. I’m not generally good at these types of games but I was really loving the freedom and atmos. I got it on steam the other day for a tenner as I believe it’s cross save so am hoping to head back into the world across both systems in the new year.

I finally got the Switch.  Tetris 99   Brilliant brilliant addictive game, and for me the TRUE successor to Gameboy Tetris and it's 2-player linkup feature (Tetris Party gets an honourable mention).

Also - free Super NES games!  Free NES games!  Only if you have a Nintendo Switch Online sub :(

So... I take it the multiplayer Tetris 99 is free but the full game (single player, and local multiplayer) requires the bought version?

Why are the games insanely expensive?!

I take it Miis aren't importable from the Wii somehow?

My Switch was getting pretty noisy so I decided to open it up today and try and clean it.

Really straightforward to do, 17 ridiculously tiny screws and the back comes off then another half dozen to get a metal cover off. Used some compressed air to clean the fan and the rest of the switch then remembered I still had some thermal paste left over so cleaned the old, dried paste off and reapplied some fresh paste.

Still not super silent but definitely more quieter than before, recommend it as a pretty easy task if anyone else is in the same boat!

Some tips:

- power the console fully off rather than leaving it on standby

- take the micro sd card out first and don’t forget that you have to push it in first to get it to pop out.
- be careful with the rails on the sides as they are attached by flimsy cables

- there are three screws to hold the heat sink down, take that out before using the compressed air for maximum benefit (it is slightly stuck to the fan to may need a knife to prise it off

RE: Rails on the side... just unscrew the middle screw, then you can leave them on, the back is only held on by the 1 screw... I found this out after paying attention on possibly the 4th or 5th time I opened one, just pinged in my head one time and thought, yeah, I'll just take out these ones :)

I saw the weekly Japanese sales figures.

Switch is like 90% of console sales and more or less rules the charts. It’s insane!

It's partly explained by the fact that there's barely a PS5 anywhere - my local used shop has a digital one for which they want 97,000 plus tax.  Other shops are selling a few to customers chosen at random in a lottery until January 31st.  The Xbox Series is even rarer.

There have been many months when it was hard to find a Switch - the Lite, not so much - but they available now.
