I hope that follows the Xbox way of doing things, where you take a screenshot, it’s uploaded to the cloud then you get a notification on your phone through the app, from which you can then share it onward.

That works pretty well.

You know the Switch is made by Nintendo, right?

So of course it doesn't do that.

After being so impressed by Streets of Rage 4, I finally got around to picking up Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. This despite the fact that I never really got on with the SMS version, which kind of felt ugly and empty after the joy of Wonder Boy In Monster Land.

Anyway, it’s fantastic! Put it in to check the cart worked and was so enchanted by the whole thing I ended up playing as far as getting the Lion Man form.

For such an old game, the mechanics have held up wonderfully, and the facelift it’s been given is really superb. The ability to switch between the modern and retro modes really drives this home - the extra variation and detail in the backgrounds of the modern version makes mentally mapping the world much easier, and is frequently take-your-breath beautiful to boot.

Best part is that it’s apparently only about 5hrs long, which just sounds perfect to my time-poor middle-aged self. Oh, and the cartridge has the Sega Master System pattern, so plus one for that.

Finished this last night - it was pretty much perfect, really great level design right to the end. I resisted the temptation to use the Tasmanian Sword in the final dungeon and played it straight, despite not really getting on with the Hawk Man form. Loved the credits with childhood photos of the French development staff, and contemporary-era photos of the Japanese development team of the original game.

Also, those tunes! Best OST remaster I've ever heard.

I'm going to have to try out the actual SMS version at some point on the Mega SG.

I've put a wanted thread up for a physical copy of Monster Boy - if anyone has one they no longer want, hit me up. Willing to pay prices which are not necessarily sensible, but not the ludicrous prices that all the (unsold) Buy It Nows on eBay have.

What could be simpler than scanning a QR code so your phone can connect to the Switch as a WiFi access point so you can scan a QR code to visit an HTML page with links to your game captures?

After you save the image from Switch, Nintendo will email you a link to a location in your Nintendo online account where you can enter your address details so they can post you a scratch card that you have to rub off to get your personalised QR code.

If you scan that with your registered smart device you can then download the picture.

@Stoppy2000

Ultimate is probably the best place to jump into the traditional MH style. There's a shitload of game there in SP and an equal ifi not Infinite amount in MP if you take to it.

Almost nothing is explained especially well though, despite loads of tutorials which are hard to parse. For fifteen quid, though, it's undeniably a unique experience and if it clicks, you will have something amazing to play for a long long time.

So my Switch came back from the repair centre unrepaired because I didn’t want to pay the £200... they’ve removed the kickstand and not sent it back

I’m developing a real vendetta against these people. They sent my joy con back almost 2 weeks ago and it still hasn’t turned up!

What the bloody hell is going on with this game?  Just looked on Amazon JP, and the western version is about 55,000 yen.  The Jp version, with English and other major languages, is about 3000.

No. Pick up world.

This one is annoying as fuck if you've never played one before.

It's probably the best of the traditional MH games, the ones before World. You'll get tons of play for your 14.99, and if it clicks with you then you'll get hundreds of hours from it. Don't sleep on multiplayer, there are plenty of us on the forum that know just how amazing MH is and will probably be able to join up with you while you learn the ropes.

World is better in many ways, but that requires a PC or console that can handle it. (I think the base game is 11.00 on PS4 at the moment, but you will almost certainly want the Iceborne expansion to go with that.) But, Generations is a lot more fun, and has more variety of monsters. 14.99 as an introduction to what is an astonishingly deep franchise is a bargain, in my opinion.

Is this going to be more like World? Or does nobody know? Also I don't have access to anything that can play world so that is off the cards for me....

The difference between World and every MH game before it is the way the various maps work. In World, it pretends that it's all one big open space, but there are actually transitions between areas that mask the loading screens, which effectively turns the map into 1 massive room. Earlier games just had literal loading screens, so each map consisted of 11 or so rooms. Nothing actually plays differently, and the monster will still sometimes just bugger off to the other side of the map which will take you ages to reach, but you always feel more like you know where it is and where you're going.

Rise will have a version of this, but it's really a much more superficial addition to the game than it sounds. Fundamentally, there are still specific bits of the map where the monster will be found, and where it will run to. The actual gameplay and comabt loops are what draws people in.

Are you telling me to just pay the £14.99 and stop fannying about?

Monster Hunter is phenomenal once you get into it. I’ve not played many, 3U, 4/4U and World but I find Generations absolutely impenetrable. If you’re not playing with friends or people who know what they’re doing, I’d be cautious as you may instantly get put off.

World and presumably Rise have many QoL improvements other than the map. Lee is selling it really short. Streamlined and easier to understand gathering and crafting, weapon/armour trees and a much faster pace in general.

Play the demo, but watch some YouTube videos first so you know what you’re doing!

Yeah these are my thoughts too.

There's a buttload of crap getting in the way of you having fun in Generations. I can't be arsed to play it.

World was the first Monster Hunter that grabbed me, and the fact that the monsters look incredible definitely helped me push through the first few hours of WTF am I doing.

I reckon Rise will have even more QoL improvements.

Well I caved and bought Monster Hunter. I'm just doing the training missions which don't seem too taxing. Very little hand holding and also there seems to be a lot going on. I've done about 4 of them so far....

This app might help you. Or it might put you off on how daunting this game is. It's on Google store not sure about Apple .

What’s the online co-op like in MH:World? My Tuesday/Thursday club are looking to pick up a new game.

I really like the coop in World. It's up to 4 people I think. World had a lower bar to entry in terms of obtuseness than other Monster Hunter games but it still had it's fair share of arcane systems and mechanics.

Went back and rinsed the last morsels of gameplay from Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. Cleared all the Unknown bonus stages, bought the final sword, got all the hearts. 6hrs 7 minutes all in, which may seem short for a £25 game, but it was a delight all the way*.

As with SoR 4, unlocking all the gallery  content is a real treat. Not only do you get all the concept art showing how they worked old pixel art up into new designs, but there are animated sketchbooks and videos of all the instruments being recorded for the soundtrack. The amount of love that went into this thing is incredible.

Anyway, thanks to @moosegrinder I now have Monster Boy coming in the post, which is going to go under the tree as my Christmas Gaming. Cannot wait!

* Except for Mouse-Man’s Unknown level, which can go to hell.

It's certainly not perfect, it won't let you all depart on a mission together if you've not watched the cutscenes by yourself first.
