My joycons are starting to drift rather a lot, think it's time to do something about it. A few questions for the hive mind:

  • Are Nintendo doing free repairs for this issue in the UK? They're about 3 years old.
  • If not, what's the repair cost?
  • Short of replacing parts, what's the best home maintenance technique, and is it really a fix or just a sticking plaster?

Trying to play Xenoblade 2, and any slight movement on the stick cancels your auto attack, which is driving me nuts.

I got my daughter’s left joycon repaired for free, it’s around 18months old. Definitely worth checking with Nintendo!

Ordered a Switch for my kids' Christmas present yesterday.  They have NO IDEA they're getting one.  Less than 24 hours later, it's arrived.  How the hell am I going to cope with it being in a box in my cupboard for 2 months??!  Don't know what I'm looking forward to more - their surprise when they open it, or me getting to 'test it out' for them.

It's almost always best to get it out and power it on to make sure it's not doa... and do any upgrades ready for XMAS morning... and try out Mario/Zelda :)

"Dad - why is there a Zelda game file that says 50 hours + on it......?"

I sent my son's Switch to Nintendo repairs* last Wednesday. Should I be worried that I have heard absolutely nothing back at all?

I didn't expect a super quick turnaround, more like a "We have this here now"

* It had stopped charging at all, tried it in 2 docks and one standalone power supply, just dead.

It’s a few months ago now, when restrictions were different etc, but I sent a Joycon back for repair on 5 May 2020, got an email acknowledging receipt on 21 May, got another email saying they’d started working on it on 2 June, and got the repaired Joycon in the post on 6 June.

Free, but not quick.

Thats reassuring, thanks. I’m happier with slow than “potentially missing”

How shiny is Control? All the shinies?

Edit - didn’t seem particularly shiny to me, but it played very well even over the Switch’s notorious wifi.

I tried out both performance mode, which to my eye is 60fps and graphics mode, which is around 30 with a lot of shinies and reflections.

I was very impressed with it all.

Lovely stuff. I played it on the Switch itself so to be fair it was never going to be Earth-shattering.

Thinking about it though - as the Switch doesn’t support HDR, it’s still going to look a bit tawdry compared to the big boys.

I’m more impressed by the streaming tech, but playing Control on Switch handheld is its own special kind of pleasure.

It's kind of a shame that the demo gives you just long enough to speedrun your way to the first combat sequence before it expires, because I wanted to get a better feel for the latency. It felt like there was a bit, but it made up for it over the base PS4 version with the stable frame rate and lack of pop-in. I wonder what hardware it's running on?

I don't think Control is HDR on any platform.

Control feels horrible to play - graphics mode made me feel ill, and even in performance mode it’s lag city. I’ve played Control on a base PS4 and Xbox One X and this is like playing that whilst on tranquillisers, I had a similar experience streaming it with PS Now, it’s 100% more enjoyable played on the actual hardware. There’s also lots of crushed blacks.

isn’t that down more to your connection though? I’ve got a bit of tin foil connecting me to the exchange. I’ll try it for a laugh but reckon at peak times it would be a waste of time.

The stream itself is perfect, apart from the aforementioned crushed blacks which is common to streaming, and my TV is in game mode at pretty low latency, so I don’t know. Thing is you need to be able to play the game on local hardware to compare it. I just don’t like streaming and I’ve tried all the services.

I tried control and seemed to play ok except it seems to start very slow and then the demo cuts out as soon as I pick up a gun... not enough time to actually know if I like the game or if my connection can cope with combat.

Have you ever played Control before? If not I can certainly recommend it as it’s excellent but please play it on anything other than this as it relies on fast responses. If you try the demo again (you get two goes) skip all the cutscenes and intros etc. with the B button and you’ll get to some actual shooting bits if you’re quick enough - but honestly whilst it might feel ok, the difference playing it locally is night & day IMO.

Played it by skipping everything on high quality graphics mode and I was honestly pretty impressed.  It seemed to keep the pace up and when fighting 6 guys at the same time I didn't notice any lag or sluggishness... The res changed dynamically, but as a switch player I'm pretty used to that... I could stay focussed on what I had to do and it didn't become a blury mess like the last time I tried cloud gaming a few years ago - I'm not going to buy it, as it makes more sense to buy a game like this on the PS4 since it's not as if I could take it out the house anyway....

BUT...

having said all that, I was really impressed given how relatively shite my internet can be at the best of times.

When we've all got 5G phones - this kind of stuff mobile becomes significantly more compelling.
