Tearaway made wonderful use of the Vita's features and I really enjoyed playing it. It felt a bit magical at times.

I realise that its creative use of gimmicks might not have been to everyone's taste, but I'm genuinely confused by the claim it was broken.

It was a great art style and premise wrapped up in a shit platformer with unnecessary and inaccurate controls. The section where you need to use the stick and face buttons and rear pad and tilt all the the same time was a massive misstep. The drawing and cutting out using the touch screen was awful as it isn't accurate enough.

And the bugs! Awful game.

Strip it down to a platformer and it's not a world beater, but the controls were never inaccurate in my experience. I do half agree about the drawing and cutting though.  NX definitely needs to have accurate stylus input on the touchscreen.

One thing that sticks out when I think of what the NX will be is will Nintendo have truly tested the demographics out on an international scale? Or simply put, have they made sure that the console's features and design fits for a Western market as well as an Asian (Japanese) one? Imo too much of their thinking of recent years has been parochial and they just don't consider the wider international picture and trends. They really need to undestand the colossal importance of the Western market, not just in terms of sales but more importantly in terms of driving desire and marketing, which feeds into other territories. It's not rocket science but they continually fail at this imo.

Can Nintendo win at this point? Their market is heavily divided. They need a machine that:

Consolidates their hand-held and home system software library, and potentially hardware.

Matches the instant, ease of use of mobile gaming.

Is comfortable to use as a handheld device, but with detachable controllers to use on home television, without repeating the mistake of the Wii U, which had 3 core controller options and confused their casual audience.

Appeals to fans of the wiimote motion controls, classic precision gaming pads and touch screen gaming...and fans of stylii.

Is powerful enough to stand respectably against Neo and Scorpio, but cheap enough to make it an impulse by for families and parents with younger children.

Delivers an online component comparable to Live and PSN.

The leaks all point to a frankenstein's monster of a machine. They are in such a tricky position and need to deliver another Wii/DS revolution to dig themselves out. But a revolution that is cheap on hardware, because the risk of the 3D and second-screen haven't paid off at all. What's left? AR? Plus, is it wise to get rid of the iconic and convenient clamshell design of the DS? No wonder they're taking so long revealing the thing.

They don't need to "win" though.

Just gotta make make a nice chunk of money.

We should be getting a new Metroid and Starfox game every 2-3 years.

Although I'd like to see good updates to both, I'm not sure getting a new one of either every 2-3 years, will make Nintendo's businessmen very happy. Tbh in the current climate I'm not sure getting one would! :(

Starfox can bugger off but we really do deserve more from the Metroid franchise.

They're businessmen who know they have the potential to create cross-over products and make a ton of money, not just a nice chunk. They were on to something with Wii - but they blew it by chasing the hardcore crowd and failing to sell consumers on some expensive and misguided tech. They desperately need to produce more first party content and exclusives, alongside a full VC. For instance they could easily make an additional £25 a year from Mariokart with annual DLC, instead of £40 once every 5 years. And they have franchises just sat around for over a generation until people forget them. We should be getting a new Metroid and Starfox game every 2-3 years.

If Metroid and Star Fox games were making money then we would see more of them.

Other M was considered a sales disappointment by Nintendo:

It wasn't a 2D game either.

2.5d? It played like a traditional Metroid for the most part. Besides the point - it was a Metroid game released within the last ten years.

As for it being a disappointment - it's not as if Metroid ever sold massive numbers, so I'm not really sure what they expected.

But hey they know what they're doing, as Federation Force demonstrates.

Other M was more like a hybrid of the previous 2D/3D games.  I liked it as well for what it's worth, although we seem to be in the minority there.  I reckon that with declining sales, Nintendo decided to try something new with the series.  And it didn't work.

Next Level Games was working on another Nintendo IP prior to being asked to work on Luigi's Mansion 2. It was rumoured that it was Metroid and it wouldn't surprise me if they were asked to go back to it after the constant requests for a new Metroid game. It's backfired massively on them.

I'm only guessing here, but it makes sense to me.

Nintendo doesn't really know what to do with Metroid and Starfox now the talent responsible is gone. They can either keep doing occasional reinventions that sell terribly, hoping for another Metroid Prime situation, or they can avoid making them completely.
