what's the lag like when playing shmups on the switch? is there much difference between regular and lite switch?

The Psikyo games unfortunately do suffer with a bit of input lag, I think 6-8 frames with the worst offenders, which is a bit shit, no getting around it. Still very playable, though.

No difference between Lite or full fat Switch.

Stuff like Psyvariar, ESP and Rolling Gunner are like shit off a shovel, though. Incredibly snappy. Ikaruga also totally fine.

Great call. Darius Collection is currently on sale on the Japanese eShop.

I can vouch for this too - I imported Darius Cozmic Collection (wanted the physical version) and it's brilliant.

I was due to go on holiday in a couple of weeks, which is obviously now cancelled, so to cheer myself up I've used the money refunded from that to order a switch. It took ages to find one online but I used that stock informer page someone recommended and got one direct from Nintendo with Breath of the Wild and a case.

I remember being blown away by the trailer for Breath of the Wild, but never got around to buying it for whatever reason.

I do have some fairly basic questions that I don't know the answer to though, hopefully someone will indulge me.

1.How long does the charge in the joycons last? Should I get a pro controller, I know it's supposed to be better but is it £60 better?

2.Can I use bluetooth headphones with it?

3.Do I need an SD card?

4.I remember reading when the switch first came out that the screen could be scratched by putting it in the dock, is that really a thing, and in that case should I get a screen protector, I don't really plan on taking it outside the house(especially in the near future).

5.I've googled "best switch games" but are there any hidden gems the forum recommends? Most of the recommended indie games on the best of lists I've played on other platforms already; like Oxenfree, untitled goose game etc so exclusives mainly.

Thanks!

Joycons about 17 hours, stick with them before deciding on a pro - yeah get a memory card especially if you plan on going digital, I’ve had a screen protector on from day one but haven’t noticed any scratching issues anyway.

What protector do you use? I’ve never put one in on a handheld but am considering it here. Don’t the glass ones stay there forever? I’m having visions of affixing it one the piss’.

Got a pair of airpods through today from a competition I entered at the back end of last year. So, what is the best option for a cheap Bluetooth audio adapter? Either cheap and easily removable to dock, or with some kind of power passthrough?

Additional question, I had a wii years ago and had bought a bunch of retro games from the online store, is there a way of getting access to them or were they tied to the console?

Oh man. I’m feeling the twitch! Bloody Nintendo stealing my games!

But no they’re all stuck on your Wii. If you purchase the online service you can play some NES and SNES games, but the selection is extremely limited compared to the VC so if anything you liked was a bit obscure you’re out of luck.

Ah, that's a shame, my Wii was stolen along with all my other games and tech stuff in a burglary about 5 years ago. Was hoping I could access the stuff I'd bought through the Wii store, can't even remember what I had!

I used the one that came with the official case, it’s only plastic but seems to do the trick.

The pro controller is nice but some of us prefer these sexy beasts

Generally people say try the joycons first. Some people find they don't need a pro.

You need an adaptor

The base console comes with 32gig. I'd say get one even if you only plan on getting carts since a lot of games need patches. If you plan to buy digital even more so. Microsd cards are pretty cheap thankfully.

Some of us had it to one extent or another. I had it on my OG a little bit (I could see the dock putting slight marks in the screen protector. I haven't seen it at all with my AC Switch.

The only difference is that you can play the regular switch in vertical mode with a special grip. Can't do it on the lite as the controls aren't detachable. But the switch is an absolute mecca for shmups regardless.

In terms of sheer quantity of quality games all round the switch is like the ps2. It's actually hard to keep up with all the good stuff. I want to get Astral Chain but have several other games to get through first not including all the good indie stuff.

Just picked up a shooter called Aces of the Luftwaffe. Never heard of it but it sounded interesting, has some good write ups and is cheap as. Looks like an interesting take on the 1945 type shooter.

It’s a solid but not earth shattering shooter. I enjoyed it, but it can be damn hard at times.

I’m tempted to upgrade to a full fat switch if I see any stock, as I fancy some portrait gaming.

Even if you could, the Wii store has been shut down.

This will always be a concern as it's a plastic screen with a plastic dock. I decided against a screen protector and instead got these felt strips for a couple of quid:

This is what concerns me a bit with Nintendo at times... When the next iteration of hardware comes out will they just shut the Switch store down and move on to the next thing... hopefully not as everything seems a bit better thought out this time with software linked to accounts rather than machines. The Wii did get released in 2006 I guess and Nintendo were doing a bit of learning regarding digital content management I guess.

Although still early days I guess.... I've invested more into the Switch than previous Nintendo hardware so if they cut me dry again at some point won't be happy.

1) A fair while 15 or so hours. Personally not a huge fan of the joycons and only use them when I have no other option. They are OK when docked into the grip that  comes with the console. I'd see how you get on with them and go from there. I ended up getting a pro controller after about 8 or so months. Great bit of kit and the battery seems to last forever on a charge. Suppose it depends if you prefer gaming on a full size pad. I also use my Switch as a home console and it mostly sits docked another reason I prefer the pro controller. £60 may seem steep but its a good bit of kit and small outlay over the years you'll be using the console.

4) Not had any scratches on mine... just be careful and keep the screen clean,. I expect the scratches will come from debris on the screen when its been docked not sure. Don't even have a screen protector on mine and no scratches after a couple of years or so. As mentioned though mine stays predominantly docked.

5) I'd sub to the Online system too whole bunch of retro Nintendo content on there and of course Tetris 99 - its only around £18 a year great value if you like Nintendo games in general.;

Oh and ENJOY! :)

Can see them sticking with the Switch for the foreseeable future, it’s just too successful for them to suddenly change the format again next gen.

You "guess" a lot! ;)

Nintendo will want to continue to make money, so having "backwards compatibility" for software isn't ideal (a big money maker) in that regard. Much better [profit] to have people double, or even triple, dip every 5-10 years.

True, but then they are also one of the few companies to have offered backwards compatibility over the years through various home and handheld consoles, and at this juncture now that their home and handheld markets have merged it would make sense to continue to offer backwards compatibility across future iterations of Switch hardware.

So work have sent me one of these for my laptop

https://satechi.net/products/type-c-multi-port-adapter-with-ethernet-v2

I know I've asked about these hubs before, but is this one ok to use with an official power adapter?

It mentions 60W power output.

@Alex W. you seem pretty clued up on the technicalities of all this.

It's the loose fitting dock connections that are dodgy right? Not the usb-c plug in hubs?

I haven't heard of any problems on anything with a proper USB plug, no. And it's from a fairly reputable brand so it probably doesn't have the bad power converter chip that a couple of cheap Switch docks had. Whether it will actually give you video output I don't know.
