I think they need to aim higher than the 3DS and Wii remote to be honest. And not only because they have a clean and characterless look to them.

The Wiimote is great and everything and is incredibly versatile, but when held as a wand the Playstation Move sits in your hand far more comfortably, features a nice analogue trigger,  and has better button placement. In sideways position the wiimote is pretty horrible to hold and the d-pad is too small.

And the 3DS is massively compromised for portability. Compare it to playing games on the Wii U Gamepad.

Obviously there have to be small compromises, but when in portable mode, NX has to have a proper analogue stick. And a full one too, not one of those shitty little VITA ones. And I want it to feel at least as comfortable as the Wii U pad feels in my hands. Detachable controllers might have to retain the versatility of the wiimote, but I think they can certainly rethink the button placement and make them a bit more comfortable and stick a proper d-pad on them.

Whatever that looks like and how chunky it ends up I don't fucking care that much really. But it would be nice if they launched it in purple.

What? No it isn't.

What? Yes it is. It's designed to be compact, close up and carry around. So it has shitter controls and isn't as comfortable to hold as the Wii U gamepad. The Wii U pad is how you'd design a handheld without giving any consideration to things like whether it will fit in someones pocket or not. I'm basically requesting that they do that. Not going to happen completely, but I think they can produce a a much better device than the 3DS.

A single screen on the NX should at least mean that they can get rid of that circle pad (fingers crossed)

And the 3DS wasn't compromised, it was designed to be how it was. A single stick was a design decision, not a compromise to make it portable.

So explain the circle pad pro for the original 3DS and the nub on the new 3DS.

A change in the design decision, and as it's possible therefore proof it wasn't originally compromised to be portable.

Nintendo had more powerful and twin sticked 3DS prototypes, but chose what they did for design/simplicity/financial reasons - NOT portability.

It was just an attempt to appease people who thought it was incomplete without the second stick.

Nothing to do with almost all modern games using twin stick controls in some way or other then. It was just to appease a tiny minority.

No idea. I played Majora's Mask with it if that's any help.

The point is, and pretty daft trying to argue otherwise really, is that most games these days use twin stick controls. Through decades of evolution it's become the standard and will remain so until something better comes along.

It's the standard on home consoles, yes.

I think it's fairly obvious that the NX will need dual sticks, I sincerely hope it has them. It just gives devs more options and on that stand point they need to be included. Alternatively, perhaps Nintendo has come up with some amazing new control which will give the same amount of control freedom and choice? If so brilliant, but it better be great.

You only need to look at portable examples such as Kid Icarus or Luigi's Mansion to see how it's to the detriment of the game not to have the dual configuration available.

Everyone is missing the point I was addressing, which is that the 3DS wasn't compromised because it was portable. It didn't have one stick because it was portable - it had it for other reasons, valid or not.

It absolutely didn't have one stick because it is portable, that's an absurd suggestion.
