I have a (probably stupid) question inspired by the 'pinnacle of game graphics' thread in the retro forum.

Remember in the 16bit era when carts started getting augmented with custom chips to boost their performance and allow rudimentary 3D? Given the Switch uses carts is the same approach theoretically possible? Could a Switch cart have some onboard tech that allowed the console to go beyond it's hardware limitations?

The concept is still possible but not with the switch hardware as it is now.

It'd be also quite tricky to make something powerful enough in any way cost effective and have sufficiently tiny cooling requirements.

Plus, what about games bought online?

It would be fantastic. But this is Capcom we're talking about. You might get Power Stone 1, for £29.99 and no improvements over the Dreamcast version of you're very, very lucky.

I would pay a lot more than £29.99 for powerstone on switch

Would be great to see a third one, If you want it maybe contact Capcom and remind them it exists. The last Dreamcast game they ported was probably the PSP collecion all of those years ago.

No idea if it's any good but there's a game called Last Fight which tries to do a similar thing without the lovely Capcom presentation, levels and characters.

Does anyone use an arcade stick with their switch?

I have a catchily-named "Xbox 360 Fighting Stick Real Arcade Pro VX SA" back in the UK that I will bring over at some point, but don't think it works with anything other than a 360 out of the box...

I have the PSP one, on my Vita. I would love it on the Switch because then I can play it with my GF portably and at home.

I use the 8bitdo N30 arcade stick on Switch. The stick and buttons aren't premium quality but they're adequate. The main reason I got one is because it can be used wirelessly with the Switch in tabletop mode. I'm satisfied with it but it can be awkward to pair at times.

I generally default to using the 8bitdo M30 (saturn style) pad for fighting games on the go instead because it's very light and it's a classic choice for fighters.

I also have a Brook converter to use my Xbox 360 Mad Catz TE stick on Switch. Since its USB you can only use it docked* but it's cheaper than buying a stick if you're only playing at home anyway.

*I've read before that using a USB C converter would let you use it undocked but I've not been able to test that. Also the USB port on the Switch is in an awkward position so you'd need a stand to accommodate or play with the system flat on a table.

@sharak Further to joffo's suggestion, I got a Mayflash NS to use my 360 stick (RAP EX) and it works very well. Lots of reviews say 'no lag' but I can perceive a tiny tiny difference compared to using it on the 360. On the other hand, a lot of shmup ports on Switch add a couple of frames of lag so that might be the key variable. No issues with it at all, though, and less than twenty quid.

Thank you both :)

Apologies for the continued questioning, but do you guys recommend purchasing the carts, or going digital. Digital seems obvious to me—I went digital with the Vita and it makes the most sense for a portable, but you can’t sell the games on and you don’t have a nice library lined up. Thoughts?

When I eventually get all my retro gear over here with me in Germany it’s also nice to look at a lot of these games and cover art.

I buy physical versions of the major Switch releases as they keep their value really well for future reselling, and I only tend to play one game at a time anyway, so I'm not bothered about having to change the cart between games. I often find that the physical versions can be bought as cheaply secondhand, if not more cheaply, than the digital versions anyway, even in sales.

Physical makes much more sense financially but if you're a lazy sod like me or enjoy duping yourself into admiring a home screen full of icons, digital is pretty tempting. In fairness, I regret buying very very few of the first party or bigger name ports, even the ones I'll never replay, it's the drip feed of ten/fifteen/twenty quid gambles in the sales which make me wince.

This is rumoured for 2020, but I don't see how it fits in the dock?  Maybe there's a HDMI on the back of the CD bit.

Judging by the way some of the Switch cartridges rattle there certainly appears to be room in the plastic shell to out a little extra something.

I have Zelda and Mario Kart (annoyingly, MK is now in the sale!) as carts, but will sell Zelda if I ever complete it, dunno about MK. Mostly for playing with the GF.

Everything else is digital, but there’s not a lot yet. Ikaruga, ESP.ra.de, Metal Slug 3... they weren’t expensive and I’d not sell them anyway.  TBH my CAVE collection on the 360 is probably never getting sold, and should they be released on the Switch I would buy them again.

Perhaps if stuff like the DC classics such as Power Stone get ported I’ll buy them physically. It’s an interesting point, though. There are titles I will clearly play once then want to move on, and others I will want to keep.

TBH what am I worried about? It’s time to play the selection that is the problem, or even, the “problem” being I have too many platforms from which to choose! Different problem for a different thread, I guess!

If there is ever a chance of you owning two switches, then buy physical games. You can only play one digital game at a time (on the same switch account). So you couldnt play game A on switch A, whilst your girlfriend/child played game B on switch B.

Its bullshit and makes me wish I had never bought any digital games, apart from the ones that are digital only.

Yeah this - we are now a 3 Switch household and I am very glad I went mainly physical

The only physical cartridge I own is for one of the Labo kits. I play exclusively as handheld; my total playtime on a TV would be less than 20 minutes of me checking what Mario Kart and Zelda looked like on the big  screen. They looked like Mario Kart and Zelda.

It’s made me a bit OCD with the icons though. When I’m taking a game off the 512 card I have to delete the icon as well.

Only things that are playable are allowed to be visible :quote:. Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
