I wouldn't get so excited about this. If the EG report is true, then the NX will be home to both traditionally console games and traditionally handheld games, all in one. So it will have both the the big high-end console games like the new Zelda, and the more basic handheld stuff like Tetris.

So it's more likely that a new Game Freak Pokemon game for NX would just be the next iteration of handheld Pokemon that they've been making for 20 years (but because it's on NX you can also play it on your big telly), instead of the mythical full-console Pokemon people have been dreaming about for decades.

But that IS what I've been dreaming about.  And it says within 6 months of launch.  Hell, I'd be happy with an upscaled version of Sun/Moon with some actual anti-aliasing and improved textures.

I'd say there's no difference between handheld and home games these days, particularly Nintendo-published titles.

Both home and handheld consoles have Tetris and many other small, indie games, both have big, sprawling adventures. The only thing stopping them release Spirit of the Wild on 3DS is the obvious technical limitation, which won't be the case with the NX.

Other than the massive fact that playing on a big telly is a completely different experience to playing on a couple of inch wide screen.

Personally I always feel handheld is far better for quick burst games; puzzlers and such, whereas I like to play epics on my TV. I honestly couldn't imagine Zelda on a tiny low-res screen. For me, at least, it'd really degrade the experience.

Immersion. That's the word I was looking for.

Just think when the NX comes out and I can sit on my sofa playing Nintendo games on a screen and not spend hours reading this forum and the arguments about this and that while pretending to watch the telly!

Or, I could read about the failure of the NX on my NX while not watching telly!

Perfick

Component out was ONLY for UND's or downloaded films though, to get the PSP to play games on the th, you had to install custom firmware, and even when you did, the machine handled it VERY badly!!

No, you can play games on a TV from a PSP 2000 on official firmware.

An interesting comment from somebody who has sauce and a track record dating back years, sounds like the idea that the dock gives a different performance profile might be wrong, and it's more like a laptop dock, just for easy connection and charging:

I don't buy that at all. If you can connect it to a TV then it needs to be able to present in 1080p. Even it just means underclocking it in portable mode.

Except it'll be a handheld Pokémon game that could well be of the visual quality of Mario Kart 8.. The newest Pokémon 3DS games look way more like 3rd person adventure games than ever before..

Same.

If it's significantly better than Wii U in terms of power when connected to TV I'm happy.

Also I think Nintendo have an eye on how Apple do things.   The first device will be powerful and mainly a handheld.  But they can bring out new devices quite often because they have an OS and architecture that's expandable.  It's the end of 'generations'.   Sure NX won't run a game made for NX 5 but NX 5 will run an NX game.  So no big generational changes, resetting the userbase back to 0 etc.

Sony & MS are obviously thinking along the same lines with their new, more powerful models.

The battery life on the NX better be amazing if it's going to be portable. As Nintendo currently sell a Wii U Gamepad High Capacity battery, it's a revenue source they might considering expanding upon with the NX.

I'm looking forward to this a lot more now.

Both the WiiU and 3DS left me cold. In fact, so did the DS and Wii.

As long as the only gimmick is home/portable console, then I'm happy.

No waggle, no dual screen BS, no fucked up GC style controller buttons.

Give me a 6" touch screen portable, 4 face buttons with SNES colours, 4 shoulder buttons and dual analogue/D-Pad and I'm happy.

Just make sure the screen is 1080p

I think people who are expecting graphical improvement when connected to the TV need to temper expectations too.

Other than perhaps higher res, I'm expecting visual fidelity to be identical.

You're probably right. As long as it can do Wii U level visuals by speeding up the GPU when docked I'll be happy.

But if anything, the docked console will be the base, and it'll lower the resolution or details when being used as a handheld to save power.

720p will be fine on the handheld too, especially with anti aliasing. I'm always surprised at how decent the Wii U gamepad looks at 854x480, and 720p will be three times as many pixels.

I wonder if they could bring back the Game Boy brand for this? The Game Boys had home players as well as being portable. Plus nostalgia seems to be very strong again for Nintendo.

I've suggested this for a while. Give it a bit and someone will be along to shoot the idea down though. Something something gender specific, forgotten brand etc.

I think it would be very very canny move, it's a fantastic brand with nostalgia ramped up to 11 and would dovetail with the portable message of the new device.

Surely that would pigeonhole it as a handheld-only console in the public eye though? And bring with it the connotations of a handheld being far less powerful than a home console.

They should definitely release a GB Classic at some point :hat:

Bad idea. You're assuming that people have a strong nostalgic connection to something they have probably semi-forgotten, or (for younger consumers) never heard of. Also, naming a make-or-break new product after a long-defunct one is a terrible, terrible idea on so many levels. It was bad enough the consumer confusion that Nintendo brought upon the Wii U and 3DS by semi-recycling the names of their previous products.

They aren't going to name it after a handheld. The selling point of this console is that it brings together portable and home console gaming experiences, so I'm expecting a name that reflects that, or just something a bit random.
