The 8bitdo M30 has been the best for me by some distance. I wasnt keen on the HORI handheld-only dpad JoyCon and the Pro Controller's dpad is just decent, not great.

This looks like the D-Pad for me! Does it work in tabletop mode?

I might wait a while for Retrobit to produce their wireless Saturn pads though as my understanding is that they will be compatible with real Megadrive/MD Mini/Switch

I can’t get my 8bitdo Snes pad to work, it has in the past but when I try to pair it it just never does - restarted console and even disconnected all controllers but nothing :(

Any ideas?

Same for me - i just emailed 8Bitdo as i can't get my Mac to recognise it either (as thought maybe it needs an update). Followed this guide but no joy.

I got my Mac to pair fine, updated before and I’ve just been through many restarts and disconnecting all controllers - I did just update all the Joycon and when I disconnected it said I had 6 paired (2 sets of Joycon, pro pad and I assume SF30) but no dice.

I was walking back to post this and was giving it ‘one more try’ and it’s paired!! I wonder if I was too close before or something

I’m sure you’re right - I wasn’t 100% sure myself - but every web page reporting on that filing that I found referred to it as a patent.

8bitdo make great controllers so obviously I hope Nintendo can’t/won’t squash them.

Yep. Virtually every site also misunderstood it as they all reported from the same wrong source - Resetera.

Does yours just get seen by the Mac when you plug it in via usb (on the official updater app)?

No, before you plug it in power it off and hold L+R+Start and the top LED’s flash (said red in manual but mine were green and blue) then plug it in.

It works in tabletop mode yes. If you are feeling impatient you could buy the USB Bluetooth receiver and use that with the Megadrive mini, that’s my plan. The M30 is really lovely.

I’ve had this happen a few times with my older SFC30, very frustrating because there doesn’t seem to be one thing you can do to get it to be picked up again. Things I’ve done and eventually got it talking again was by going to the ‘change grip/order’ page on the Switch, turning on the controller and pressing the shoulder buttons as instructed - I’ve also put the controller into pairing mode from this page. A Switch restart (not sleep/wake, mind you) also seems to help flushing out the problem.

Both my 8bitdo controllers were a real bugger to get working with my Switch. My M30 didn’t work until I gave it to my sister, who managed to get it working using more advanced technical skills. The M30 is a great controller, superb d-pad, but feels ‘off’ for most Super NES games due the button layout. Works a treat with 2D indie games and the Arcade Archives releases though.

My NES30 must have been on the blink too, as there's noticable lag when I use it on the Switch.

I quite like the dpad on the Hori joycon itself, but they should have swapped its position with the analogue stick, the L button is stiff and cheap-feeling and the minus button is beyond abysmal, the spongy little piece of shit. Also sucks it doesn't have rumble.

Never leaves my switch, though...

I use an 8bitdo SF30 for a lot of 2D gaming, which is OK, but the face buttons feel loose and have too much travel, the shape isn't the most comfortable to hold for a long time, and the dpad isn't as good as the hori. (Also the analogue sticks are garbage). I've heard the pro+ fixes a lot of the issues with the design though.

The M30 works perfect, just was (very) tricky to get it to connect for the first time. Fingers crossed it stays reliable. :)

I also have an NES30, the first revision, and it’s not as nice to use, if I’m being honest. Build quality feels rather hollow, not as solid feeling as the M30, and ergonomically speaking it could’ve been better.

I think I read that if you buy extra online subs they are accumulated against your account, is that right?

Yes, you can stack the subs as long as they are the same type (so single user or family).  You can’t stack different types - so if you are single user, a family code will just replace it totally.

the power sliding in SNES Mario Kart is a bit of a head scratcher when you're so used to endlessly left/right powering round bends in MK8, it feels so restrictive in comparison to what we're now used to.

I find it much purer, it’s a racer and love it for TT stuff - you have to be far more accurate than the modern games - this and 8 are best by miles but for very different reasons!

way purer, your turning in pots are perfect or messed up, and its much harder, if not impossible, to correct them without losing time
