Apologies if there's a well-known answer to this, but what Switch controller had the best dpad?

The 8bitdo M30 has been the best for me by some distance. I wasnt keen on the HORI handheld-only dpad JoyCon and the Pro Controller's dpad is just decent, not great.

Interesting, and you may know this already, but the new Switch iteration has the same 4310 mAh battery as the 'old' one.  It's just that they've updated the main chip so you get a longer battery life.

Charging system configeration is the same, heatsink the same....game slot the same...same fan, small changes for the video signal, some smalller filters for the video signal (makes sense if its drawing less power) and some differences including reduced configuration.

More importantly, is the shitty old drifty JoyCon the same design?  The answer is no, but...is it better?  Only time will tell...

You know, Stunt Race FX isn't *that* bad after all. Maybe it's playing it on the small screen or something?

It begins to feel better after you sort off understand the input lag etc and anticipate things. I still love the game atfer all these years. Aqua tunnel is a great course.

That is good, that is good.

They added 2 or 3 Nes games every month so perhaps they will do something similar.

The switch joycon dpads are ideal for some stuff where you need to hit separate directions (puzzle games!) but terrible for games required lots of diagonals and transitions - even sliding your thumb over the joycon buttons for a dragon punch or whatever is quite uncomfortable.

Nintendo have already confirmed going forward the releases won't be as set in their launches unfortunately:

'More Super NES games will be added after launch, but those releases will not adhere to a regular schedule. Please look forward to future announcements."

I'm sure all the usual suspects will show up eventually.

Well, except for the ones that are already being sold separately in collections like Super Castlevania IV & Secret of Mana.

Dare we hope for Chrono Trigger though?  They did remake that for the DS & AFAIK a port of the mobile version came out for PC not long ago, but as it's not actively being sold right now maybe Square will be willing to allow it.

Thanks for this. Does the 8bitdo one have rumble and can you use it to turn the Switch on?

The SF30 Pro (SNES pad with added analogue sticks and special Switch buttons like ZL/ZR, home and screenshot) does have gyros and rumble, the M30 has neither. None of them can turn the Switch on from sleep unfortunately, they have to pair with the system while it’s already on.

There’s quite a bewildering range of SNES-style controllers available from 8bitdo. I’ve got the Pro and an older, now discontinued model which looks identical to the Japan/Euro pad. The build quality is excellent.

Now that Nintendo are actively making SNES wireless controllers I do wonder what the legal situation for 8bitdo might look like and if Nintendo would be inclined to order them to stop making them.

Would Nintendo be able to enforce that, legally? Nintendo was granted the patent for the SNES controller design in 1993, so, given that a patent only lasts 20 years, surely now anybody is free to make their own controller with the same design?

Cheers! The SF30 Pro is the one I want but it seems to be sold out in most places.

Edit: Just found it on Amazon, ha. £43, though...

No rumble and you cant turn the Switch on with it, no (well I can't figure out how to at least).

It's very lightweight and the dpad is great. Plus it has 6 face buttons so it's good for Street Fighter, which was my main reason for getting it. It still has Home and Share buttons but obviously lacks sticks.

I believe a Saturn-style controller with added analogue is being released later this year by Retro-Bit but I cant remember if its gonna be Switch-compatible.

Yes but Nintendo did recently file a patent for a wireless SNES style controller, that may give them them the necessary legal footing.

No they didn’t. They filed a wifi compliance report for the controllers.

I’m sure you’re right - I wasn’t 100% sure myself - but every web page reporting on that filing that I found referred to it as a patent.

8bitdo make great controllers so obviously I hope Nintendo can’t/won’t squash them.
