That and it had the correct number of buttons for SFII (the 6 button controller notwithstanding - which I recall being really hard to find). Also it looked better on the SNES.

The MD version was a weird resolution, needed 2x 6 button pads to play your pals, used 64 colours instead of 256 and the music was atrocious, the speech samples even worse. Snes version was perfection.

The megadrive version's music was much closer to the arcade and it didn't play like treacle.

Play like treacle - that's gona need expanding on. My japanese version plays like silk, I hope you're not suggesting a pal version as being a barometer.

Your post does remind me of the amusing lengths magazines went to at the time to proclaim 'their' version as the superior one. Sega mags saying things like 'well, there is an extra apple in the back of Dhalsim's stage, making it the more accurate version', thus placating their readership.

I can't stand SNES SF2 (haven't tried New Challengers though), so horrible compared to MD's Championship Edition. Just feels...dead. Bias from CE being the one I grew up on though, sure.

Likewise, SEGA's 8-way just feels better for moves compared to Nintendo. You guys are nuts! :P

Even Microsoft picked the Championship Edition for Live Arcade back in the day. ^_^

Putting aside your bias (if you can), what is wrong with SNES SF2, and please don't list faults from the 50hz (more) bordered PAL game.

I created a mock-up based on the Eurogamer report yesterday. I quite like the idea of magnetic Wii-style controllers that attach to the screen portion, with the L, R and Z buttons as triggers on the back.

Neither this nor the Eurogamer mock up seem very portable. Surely it needs to be at least psvita/3ds size to be feasible as a handheld.

Nothing to do with PAL/NTSC stuff. The SNES version just ran a bit sluggishly and had some slowdown compared to the arcade version. The megadrive version didn't have those problems at all, which makes sense considering the much faster CPU. The MD version with 6 button pads was the best home version.

SSFII was a different story.

I'm wondering if the TV connection is a physical one.

Presumably NX has a touchscreen because it would be bizarre not to, especially given Nintendo's appeal to the young. However, if you were locking the main unit into a dock then it would be awkward to use said screen, so you'd either need to design games around not always having a touch screen — which would be a huge pain — or emulate touch by pointing with the breakaway controllers, which doesn't sound great either.

Instead, perhaps the 'dock' is actually more of an HDMI dongle. Think something along the lines of a Chromecast in form factor using the wireless display chips in the GamePad, albeit the other way around; the short range makes a lot more sense when you're streaming to a TV as opposed to wanting to walk away from it.

SEGA made the best D-Pads. Nintendo's stiffy can get lost.

You're fucking insane!

Master System was just a square, Megadrive was always far too loose for any presision... need I go on?

Jesus, the amount of damage a Dreamcast pad does to you whilst playing Street Fighter Alpha is almost grounds for ABH.....

I don't agree with this at all, the only slowdown on mine was the deliberate stuff to emphasise a deep dragon punch etc.  Hated the md version, scratchy sound, worse pad, 64 colours, not even close to being the best home version even back then..3do, snes, pc engine, then md.

Can agree about Dreamcast as they basically made the Nintendo one (just raised higher) but MS to Saturn was pure comfort not seen on controllers since.

MD 6-button d-pad is a thing of beauty as is the d-pad on the Saturn controllers.

Considering my 3DS XL one broke from normal use, and use the New 3DS one with more caution as a result, no, circle pads can go to hell.

Of course if the controllers really come off, this will be the first handheld console with easily-replaceable controls if you break them.

Magnets next to a screen?

Not really an issue with flat screens. Was a problem for CRTs because they have a fine metal mesh (the shadow mask or aperture grille) just inside the glass, which is what would get deformed by proximity to magnets.
