Hyrule warriors has a choppy frame rate and less enemies on old 3ds, its definitely less desirable.

Fewer.

It also doesn't have GIANT GANON MODE or multiplayer.

I think it's good from the perspective of Nintendo not having to worry about supporting two completely different machines anymore. It's been clear for a while that they don't have the manpower or studios to adequately support both a handheld and a home console without large gaps between releases. This allows them to kill two birds with one stone and should hopefully mean less droughts when the third parties inevitably stop supporting it after a token effort.

On the other hand, I no longer have any interest in handheld gaming. After selling both my 3DS and Vita I simply realised that if I was at home I would rather play my home console and when out and about I couldn't be bothered carting along a handheld device that needed a bag to put it in.  So half the selling point of the device is gone.

There's nothing about it that prevents me from just enjoying it as a home console, but nor is it a very exciting proposition either. Somewhere between Wii U and XBone in power and with the only real unique USP not being of interest to me is a  bit underwhelming for a new Nintendo console. Still, I'll probably buy one for the new Zelda so they've got my cash regardless.

On the face of it, this will suit me. If any of it is true of course! I don't play much home console stuff at all, portable is where it's at for me.

From a development point of view, combining home and portable absolutely makes sense. Just so long as they have the develpment environment in place and can make things as streamlined as possible. I like the idea of having 2 controllers built in too. This will promote more local multiplayer ideas and implementations.

There's still a long way to go of course. And plenty of time for Nintendo to fuck up major aspects. Still, exciting to see what they come up with! :)

Meh. As someone with very little interest in handheld gaming, this just means my console will be gimped in terms of power for a feature I'll hardly use. I'll still buy it of course ;)

It'll be pretty energy efficient and I doubt it'd be much more powerful if they were just making an Xbox-ish thing.

Plus you should be able to continue to play a game whilst going for a really big shit, which is the ideal of any gaming platform.

My initial take on this is it sounds pretty dumb and will end up being a flop that makes the Wii U look like the Wii, erm, non-U.

Of course by typing that it probably means it'll sell like an iPhone that could give blowjobs. Feel free to dig up this post and score points for years to come.

If it had a flexible 6"-7" touchscreen, and the guts of the console (mainboard based on tech like Nvidia's Tegra X1, wireless, battery, microSD etc) underneath - you could have a modular system that is basically a small tablet that can play Nintendo's mobile games, but can then be placed in either a foldable DS shell when you want it to be portable, or a Gamepad shell when you want to connect it to a TV.

Then you'd have a base station attached to the TV that the console could connect to wirelessly - and as that'd be cheap to produce, you could have one connected to every TV in the house if you wanted, so you could play on the big screen anywhere. As people have said, they'd just be adapting the Wii U wireless tech to go the other way.

Completely off with the flexible touchscreen, but the rest is pretty much there. After writing that, I developed my own take on it at work - using a mobile as the guts. Unfortunately a new CEO joined the company and the funding was pulled.

If the brain of the NX is in the controllers, like Eurogamer says, that could potentially mean you could use your own mobile as the screen - just install an NX app to connect it. That'd make it even more portable.

A take out of the home handheld console - Pokemon GO. Oh no :(

I'm bound to get one however, I half expected a standard console; that's what I wanted. It's a shame the DS won't see a major upgrade. This looks like one console to replace the Wii U and the DS.

I can understand not liking the direction this has gone in if you wanted a traditional console, but I can't see how this would be disappointing coming from 3DS, surely it's a massive upgrade in every conceivable way? That thing was dated the day it launched.

For those wanting a 'traditional' console, surely this gives you that (with the dock) even if you never took it out the house.

The added bonus would be off tv play.

I dont int think the machine would be gimped as a home console in any way.

The biggest problem this solves is that they can plough ALL their Nintendo creative powers into a single device.

They know they're not going to dominate with this but they know they have enough of a userbase across both their markets to nail some incredible games with all their teams sitting in the same space.

I don't think they care about 3rd party same time releases with the other machines any more. And neither do I.

Amazing how that diagram is being shared around the world as though it is the NX, when in reality it's just some idiot's mock up after speaking to Dave down the pub.

Great clickbait by that rag Eurogamer though, ad revenue will be through the roof.

When it was announced and launched, the 3ds's 3D effect amazed, so I wouldn't call it dated. I still love the effect, especially on a n3ds. I'll be sad to see it go but can understand it, given that it's a huge resource hog.

I wanted to see what Nintendo could do with something a bit more powerful than the current Xbox/Playstation. Considering what they've done with Mario Kart with a Wii U (and Pikmin), I imagine, they'd create some breathtaking visuals with something capable of providing their first party teams with more oomph.

I literally won't believe anything about the NX until Nintendo officially announces it themselves.

Er, OK. I'm sure the success of a game released a week ago has led Nintendo to completely scrap their plans for a console coming out in eight months that they've been working on for four years.

People on GAF are saying software will be built around handheld pick up and play more. I wonder if Breath of the Wilds 100 small shrines instead of hour-long dungeons are designed with that in mind?

It makes me wonder what happens to handheld software, are they finally going to make a 360/PS3 quality level Pokemon, push it as digital only, or have that stuff go to smartphones?
