If it is a tablet, I'm sure Nintendo will have focus on local co-op modes for the majority of games, which while not revolutionary, will bring a lot of fun to the table. Having a friend drop in to mess around in Hyrule could be amazing.

If they do just bring out a repackaged Wii U in a mobile shell without a disc drive, and relegate TV upscaling and large HD to an optional extra device, I'm sure the entry price point could be strikingly low as well. Something that could compete with entry level android tablets or amazon fire thingies could do wonders over xmas with all this expensive VR tech being way out of reach for most kids.

I just hope they go for a quality screen and not some dim-lit cheap thing or prioritise 3D or some such gimmick.

Yes. I erred.

But whenever it comes out, if they can hit a $199 price point, for a portable Wii U level tablet with zelda at launch and a portal to a whole library of classic nintendo games and other media tied to a proper account system - they could do very very well.

I'm pretty sure they're allowed to sell it after its launch as well though. Unless it really is a Wii U 2

Mum: What do you want for Christmas, son?

Son: Please mum, get me that cheap Nintendo console. Whatever you do, don't get me the latest, most powerful version of the PlayStation or Xbox that plays all the games my mates are playing. Thanks mum. Love you.

Mum: No worries son. *whispers* Stupid kid.

Yeah because that didn't happen when the Wii came out.

Nah. All the mum's bought the Wii for themselves. Played a bit of bowling and maybe gave WiiFit a go once, then away it went in the cupboard.

Hi I'm Camel and I'm in your topic to make a try-hard one-liner.

I'm only joking though. I hope Nintendo do pull out something special. I really want to play the new Zelda.

There's more chance of winning back the hardcore gamer than the Wii masses. The Wii owners are too busy playing Crossy Road for free on their smartphones. Plus the fact that Nintendo are making games/apps for their phones and tablets now.

If Zelda delivers on its E3 showing then that alone should sell NX to gamers. Then if they can pair that with some compelling new software for an expanded audience, a la Wii Sports, they could have another Wii on their hands - a system with wide appeal and games for everyone.

Depends what you mean by gamers, I think.  If you mean people like us, I think we're a minority compared to the hordes who buy COD and FIFA.  And I'm not sure they're interested in a new Zelda.  I don't know how much Zelda usually sells though so I'm probably way off the mark.

Is it a bad thing? The cost of cart ram is peanuts so not as if storage will be an issue. Plus cartridges are awesome to collect.

We've been over it before but they're terrible for e-waste, never going to be cheaper than discs, and their only "advantage" is stupid hipster nostalgia.

There are lots of advantages.  Not least the potential for the console and the  handheld to share the same media.   It still think that's the big thing about NX.

I doubt they will have a console that has a handheld element that will compete directly with their own handheld product. I can see WIi U like implementation, which I think is a great solution, but you don't need discs or carts for that obvs.

We'll see.  Everything they've said fits with the handheld and console running the same games.   It could absolutely be bollocks too.

I think they'd be crazy to go down the handheld route again. The Wii U was a failure and the pad adding nothing, bolting something else onto the NX just isn't going to work. Controllers all the way.

Not sure what you mean.   I think it's a standard console with a standardish controller that takes carts.    They will also release handheld (perhaps later, perhaps first) which runs the same carts.    Also perhaps if you get them together you have something like a Wii U but with a number of advantages (can support many local handhelds each with their own processing/rendering).

I disagree about the pad adding nothing.   It's ace.  It gets used for off-screen (or whatever the term) all the time here.   And of course Mario Maker,  Splatoon etc.

The Wii U pad was one of the main reasons I bought one. I use it far more than I do on the TV. I think its a great set up. I just don't see them releasing anything into direct competition with 3DS

Wouldn't complain if they did though!

I meant having another game pad like for the Wii U. It didn't sell at all, time for something completely different or a decent controller.  The gamepad was never used to any sort of good potential and added little I felt to the whole experience. I just think it'd be suicide to go down that path again.

I think the 3DS is looking old now.   I can see the NX console in 2017 and the NX handheld the year after maybe.

They're not doing that.   Removing the pad stuff from Zelda is indication of that.   It'll be something akin to a standard controller.

We know they've merged the console and handheld dev teams.   I think that's another strong indicator of shared media.
