The gamecube version of Twilight Princess is considered superior to the wii version not because of anything technical but because the game is straight up better to play on the gamecube. You have a better sense of control with the gamecube controller than you do on the wii version where the motion controls made the swordplay more difficult, the only aspect of the wii version gameplay wise that you could argue was better was using the pointer to shoot projectiles. It's not a game that was designed for the wii and it shows when you play both versions.

Is the NX at all likely to be a modified version of Wii U tech?

To add to what Alex W has said, it's been widely rumoured that Nintendo are developing ports of Smash Bros 4 and perhaps also Splatoon for the NX, which would appear to suggest that it isn't backwards compatible with Wii U games and therefore probably doesn't use the same architecture.

Nintendo looking to shake up Mario like they did with Zelda

Quote

"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two," Shigeru Miyamoto said, "Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."

Miyamoto explained that the challenges Nintendo faces in tweaking the Mario formula are unique from those dealt with in producing Breath of the Wild because of how wide an audience Mario games reach.

"It's kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games," Miyamoto said, noting that having new people join Nintendo has allowed them to look "at the conventions with fresh eyes."

Some things don't really need shaking up, while I bemoan the lack of a simple single player campaign in MK8 I don't think I could look forward to something like Mario Kart Paradise.

Oh god. Now you've put that idea out there I need it.

So Mario is at  least 2 years away? Surely this goes against NX getting a  Mario game at launch?

Also, Reggie has said the hardware isn't of concern and don't expect  the NX to be a powerhouse. This is making me lean towards the fact NX  is a tablet.

If NX is a home console and is underpowered then it will most likely just become a wii u 2 and be treated the same. If that bombs... well is anyone gonna trust Nintendo again?

Think of all the novelty cases! Mario blocks!

I'd personally prefer a DSi style tablet - still nintendo, but aiming for a slightly better build quality.

Thing is, they could do both. With no need for software to take retail space, they could push a number of builds with different finishes, hard-drive spaces, amiibo bundles...

Retailers make practically nothing on hardware. There's no way that they'll waste space on tons of different hardware SKUs. Reggie has actually cited this as an issue for availability of different special editions and the like in the US as well.

NX being a tablet because Reggie has downplayed specs again makes no sense either.

No one wants a new F-Zero more than me. A big, glorious, blisteringly fast and beautiful new sci-fi racer. However will it sell? Did GP Legends for that matter? Will people pay money for an update nowadays? The way things are currently going I'd say no. :(

A new F-Zero would sell like shit.

The existing game series most likely to get a level maker is probably Mario Kart. I'm not sure I want that though. I do really want a Mario Maker 2 though. There was so much left out of the original and there's so much potential for it to be even better.

Yeah f zero is never going to get another full blown game unless it's released as budget or eshop. I think the f zero levels in Mario Kart are enough now,  although I'd love more in the future.

Thst eshop game that is pretty similar to f zero was decent enough but I'd not have paid full price for it.

So reading between the lines, Breath of the Wild NX is not going to look a whole lot different from the Wii U version. Called it!

That's a massive supposition. Nintendo never brags about their hardware power, whether it's impressive or not. The last time they did was on the N64 and it did them shit-all good. They said it "wasn't about the specs" for the GameCube too, and that machine was significantly more powerful than the PS2.

CD Project Red Dev "NX will be fantastic"

Quote

Host: What do you know about NX?

Fabian: It will be fantastic. As developer [CD Projekt] you get access to the hardware and everybody [at CD Projekt] is looking forward. We know things.

Host: Are you lying now?

Fabian: No, no.

Host: Sometimes I cannot tell if you are telling the truth or not.

Fabian: No, no! It was like this in the past as the Wii prototypes came in, back then called “Revolution”. It was so funny that in Japan they were all very excited at the developer studios of SEGA, they thought it was very good. The Europeans took a little longer. Like “Well, maybe this doesn’t work”, you know, because it was technically just a GameCube. It was not much more. But NX what you hear [of the developers] about NX is all very positive.

Host: But the hardware will be much worse than the new Xbox.

Fabian: I think this will never again be the main emphasis in the future [for Nintendo]. Can it [NX] be better than the new Xbox? Take a realistic point of view: is Nintendo able to build a console that has got more power than Xbox?

Host: In theory it is possible.

Fabian: Affordable? Do they have the contacts to the industrial facilities, resources… [Shakes head several times in denial] And what would be the positive outcome? Who is going to develop games for it?

*They go on to talk about SNES, 32X, Dreamcast etc*……Fabian: But anyway, I am really looking forward to NX.

Probably just shits n' giggles though.

Apparently this Doehla guys a PR guy for Sega and CD in Germany, and not a developer. He also says he works for Bethesda on this interview. Also he leaked the original Xbox a month before it was announced talking to the same interviewer, so this was (apparently) mostly an inside joke, "you're not going to get me again", that ended up breaking out to a wider audience. Or maybe that's cover for breaking NDA, who knows?

People seem pretty quick accepting that Nintendo can't make a powerful console because they're only this little company with a few guys working there. Looking around charity shops for bits for their new console.

My uncle works for Fisher Price and said that the NX is going to be more powerful than the PS5.

As someone who has had a wii u for several years, I hope it is at least significantly more powerful than that, if they want me to pay several hundred pounds to play their games again. have a bad feeling it`s going to be another gimmick controller based console though, probably with even more amiibo BS.

Nintendo currently make the best games (since sega became a pale shadow of their former self). In a way it`s a shame. If it were absolutely any other current day games company, I could happily just never play their games again, but if I thought I could let Mario\Zelda\Mario Kart games etc come out without wanting to play them, I`d probably just give up on gaming altogether.

I love nintendo games, but I think they`re the worst of the 3 companies in terms of fleecing the consumer etc. This opinion is unrelated to NX (which we know nothing about), it is based on everything else they`ve done.

I`ll be wary of the NX if it`s a handheld.  I know they sell well and I guess that is more important than my opinion, but I honestly think the majority of nintendo handhelds are awful from a hardware/ergonomics perspective. They seem to intentionally gimp most models with some obvious flaw in one way or another in order to incentivise upgrading to the inevitable "new model".

GBA- comfortable to hold, has a headphone socket, No backlight makes screen impossible to see,

GBA SP: no headphone socket and uncomfortable to hold unless you have tiny hands,

GBA Micro; no gb/gbc games,

Original DS: looks crap and I dislike the buttons.. but other than that ok I guess?,

DSi: no GBA games,

3DS: folding scratches screen, sweet spot for 3d nearly impossible to maintain etc etc.

A couple of weeks ago I had my first experience of seeing a young child using a wii u gamepad to play a game in which it`s mandatory (Lego City) and it just made me think considering their audience etc making such a giant controller was a pretty dumb move (one of several with the wii u).
