If I launched a console based on the ZX Spectrum tomorrow Ubisoft would bring out Just Dance on it.

Wait, Just Dance has been announced for the Spectrum Next? (which is the most exciting new game system announcement).

here's a sneak preview of Just Dance 2017 on the Spectrum Next

Interestingly, the GameCube and Wii U launched with a shit load of third party titles.... I guess people really do buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games...  (No shit, Sherlock!)

So did the Wii, so what does that tell you? There was even much mocking over how CoD was selling better on the Wii than the PS3 at the time...

I mean he's right, they don't need them, but I always think, "what about the third parties?"

Actually if Sony and Microsoft are mandating compatibility between their new and old systems, devs still have to make the games work with PS4 and XB1.  So if the NX matches at least the performance of the original PS4 and XB1, they may have a decent chance at third party for the next few years.

I heard the NX will have this graphical feature, very important to Nintendo. It lets the new Zelda render that bit in the game where you jump on your shield, slide down a grassy hill and go WHOOO!

It's called 'Enough power to render nice looking characters with nice animation, doing cool stuff with things to other nicely animated characters in a big colourful environmnt with nice grass at a resolution that looks nice on your HDTV. All while looking quite a bit better than it would have on the older WiiU.'

Yeah but everyone initially bought a Wii for Wii Sports... it was an absolute system seller.

So reading between the lines, Breath of the Wild NX is not going to look a whole lot different from the Wii U version. Called it!

I think that's massively reading between the lines. From what I've seen of the treehouse stuff, there's noticeable framerate drops in the Zelda demo. I wouldn't be surprised if it's being built for the higher spec machine and will be poorer performance on Wii u. Does that fit with the TP experience on GameCube?

Wonder if it's ppc based then. Can't see them porting it to x86 that quickly.

Although it's very possible to write code in a high level language like C, C++ or Rust in a way that performs better using one type of CPU compared to another, the added compute power should make such optimisations unnecessary. They'll just work with the existing code, but have two compile targets. Also, x86 is really the only game in town with regards to desktop-class computing these days, all the consoles moved over this gen, would be very surprised if they buck the trend.

No.

Not that I can remember anyway.

And some folks claimed it was a better fit to 4:3 presumably because it was designed for the GC first. Don't know about now but for quite a while the GameCube version was kind of rare and expensive.

Still the same if not even more expensive, have seen them going for £60-70 but they don't seem rare, loads for sale on ebay.

Is the NX at all likely to be a modified version of Wii U tech?  That would ensure BC & (hopefully) make it cheaper, but perhaps Nintendo is going to follow Sony & Microsoft's example with the PS4 & Xbox One of ditching propriety hardware/development environments & moving to a platform that's closer to PC, ensuring ease of development & future BC at the cost of losing previous system BC (And the associated game libraries) for now & making the machine cost more.

Though i'm sure that if it is the case that BC is being ditched for the NX, Nintendo could accommodate themselves to the quite revolutionary idea of porting their back catalog to the system & selling it to us all over again.  I mean, the NES version of Super Mario Bros is worth a few quid of anyone's money, right?

Twilight Princess on Gamecube was considered the superior version at the time, all the wii version had over it was widescreen.

Given the context of discussion, it seems youre implying that technically / graphically that the GC version was superior. But they were identical, I thought? (given other replies, I'm not the only one who thinks that)..

Id say the dropped frames are more indicative of a game that still has a good 9 months in the oven..

I think it's terribly unlikely. The WiiU is heavily derived from the Wii's processor, meaning it's propping up a processor design that goes back to about 2004. Since then, PowerPC has died and the POWER architecture has become almost exclusively used in servers and HPC systems, so Nintendo probably couldn't get IBM to design them a new kind of PowerPC chip for any price. That leaves them the choice of continuing to upgrade an ancient chip, or abandoning PowerPC.
