So September for the Online service (and presumably Dark Souls).

Meanwhile, just a couple of weeks until Monster Hunter

I am tempted with Monster Hunter. I paid £50 for the digital version of MHW but it never clicked like MH4U, because the frame-rate on a base Xbox One was shit. What's the frame-rate like on this Switch MH then? It's been out in Japan right?

Article starts by making a joke about Nintendo not doing it and then goes on to point out exactly why they didn't do it.

Next comes the long list of what this Hori one lacks...

Even if you are willing to forego the ability to detach and multiplayer with your joycons, lacking vibration and the gyro means that games, including Zelda, just won't play properly, making this a pretty pointless product imo.

I must admit to only skimming the article but it does look like it is not ideal.  I thought Nintendo would be releasing some more options though.

it looks like they've substituted a woman for a ship and rebadged it

I wish, I miss the era of avatar-led shoot-em-ups! This, instead, appears to have punching in it. Where's my spiritual successor to Forgotten Worlds/Battle Mania etc.?

There's some Touhou spin-off danmaku coming at the end of the month, looks pretty Deathsmilesy but with a different aesthetic.

Alas, I don't have the stomach for bullet hell shooters; Ikaruga's the furthest down that road I can handle.

Deathsmiles is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier than Ikaruga. You should try it. I'd say it's generally sub 16-BIT levels of difficulty (ie. easier than Area88/Thunderforce IV, etc).

I worry that the sheer noise factor of the bullets and enemies will still overwhelm me (part of the reason Ikaruga isn't too bad for me: the bichrome threats make it easier to parse than most of the genre), but I'm willing to give it a try. Next time it's on sale for PC (or should I ever get a working 360 again, I might seek that version instead)!

No, but perhaps a grip for portable use will help?

I've got this one (on a recommendation here) and it feels a lot more comfortable (and more comfortable than the previous grip I bought):

Tenner.

How do you take this on and off Without stressing the joy cons connection?

It's probably best to check some videos first then. Despite not being tat taxing it certainly does become very chaotic very quickly.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 seems like an extension of the first game. It's pretty much what I've always wanted from a VC sequel.

I rinsed the demo last night/today: a nice touch is that doing so unlocks a demo-exclusive mission, which combined with the save carrying over to the full game makes it one of the most appealingly designed demos I've played in a while. As you say, it is an extension of the original game, to a fault. Meaning:

Pros:

  • It remains utterly gorgeous, including in handheld mode (though I did experience brief slowdown once in the latter when there were a large number of units right next to the character and on-screen - only really an issue if you start a mission with a large squad and opt to control the rear-most character).
  • The gameplay remains that unique turn-based third-person direct-control hybrid strategy thing that we all love.
  • It keeps the fun, quirk-based characterisation, so you can enjoy your characters randomly losing focus because they were made to stand by a dude/become killing machines because they're by their favourite hottie, and equally get to go through your list of squadmates and make sure all the racists are never in your team/promptly killed in battle.
  • It looks to be another take on the generic but effective 'plucky group of rebels grow as people while fighting off an encroaching empire' storyline which was so enjoyable in the first game.
  • The short missions and bite-sized storytelling structure are a perfect fit for portable gaming.

Cons:

  • It looks to be another take on the generic but effective 'plucky group of rebels grow as people while fighting off an encroaching empire' storyline, and seems to have decided the emulate the original as much as possible even to the point of having the protagonist and obvious love interest cut as close visually to the original's characters as possible. Oh, and of course they're from the same country as the original game's characters, for reasons. I do like that it's a parallel story to the first game though, that's a nice touch, and maybe they'll use it to good effect - that remains to be seen, of course!
  • Mechanical differences from the first game are few and far between. The main source of deviation is the grenadier unit, whose indirect fire ability has interesting implications for setting up/dealing with interception fire. Oh, and that the main tank only takes one command point to activate now, and that to make up for this the maps (so far) have featured lots of areas it can't enter. Otherwise, it's exactly the same as you remember.
  • Level design felt very familiar too (increase in narrow passages notwithstanding); however, I'm willing to cut the game a bit of slack here what with the demo being restricted to early levels designed to introduce the player to the game's basic concepts.
  • The menus are just as inexplicably laborious as before.

Those cons would bother me a lot more if it weren't for the fact that the only other game that I can think of which has tried to follow in VC's footsteps in the ten years(!) since its release has been Code Name: S.T.E.A.M on the 3DS, and that game was as awful as it was hideous; with nobody else pushing the genre on, or even giving us decent entries in it, I'm willing to cut Sega a bit of slack.

Plus, you know, the original design was absolutely aces, so I'm happy to just have another entry in the genre. Roll-on September 25!

BATTLE MANIA!!! You wouldn’t believe how long I’ve been trying to remember the name of that game for! It’s like you’ve answered one of my life’s mysteries...

Bomb Chicken reduced by 40% (didn't it just come out???).  Anyone who has played it - is it worth £7.19?

I bought it on release (I think just over a month ago?) and played a fair chunk - haven’t completed it yet as I got distracted.

You know those Flash games that you probably played in the early 2000s with simple controls? It’s a good one of those. The game is split into small levels with some hidden collectibles in those. Each take 5 mins tops to get through.

You’ll probably get an hour or two of fun out of it. People have different opinions on game pricing but I think 7 quid is fair.
