There must be some reason - most likely the same reason that even the PS4 requires a dongle to do it (which is handy because it means the PS4 headphones work on Switch).

Well the headphone jack outputs analogue but the audio stream is digital. I’ve written off Sony’s Choice as a peripheral seller (they can’t sell proprietary memory cards anymore, after all) but Nintendo haven’t bothered with that yet. Maybe it’s to force people to use the app.

Do MS do/allow it on XB? Genuine question, I don't have one so don't know. If they don't either, there is clearly something going on...

I can only see two possible explanations:

  1. There's a licencing/certification cost they don't want to incur. Putting the functionality in a separate peripheral means the hardcore can still have the functionality, but Joe Average doesn't end up having to subsidise them through higher hardware prices. Interesting reference point here is the original X-Box, which could (without hacking) only play DVDs with the remote add-on - the DVD Video logo was on the remote receiver itself, and it was the remote that carried the license cost.
  2. They don't want to be responsible for crappy wireless headphones with out-of-spec Bluetooth functionality interferring with the controllers. Sony get around this by selling the headphones/receiver as a bundle, so they have full control.

Interesting datapoint is that the PSP/Vita consoles, as far back as the PSP Go, have Bluetooth headset support. But if the situation is #1, then it's possible the licensing restrictions are less stringent for mobile devices (or it's a more likely use-case, and thus worth the cost), while for #2, it uses a wired controller.

If it is #2, then I wish they'd at least enable bluetooth headphones when playing handheld with attached controllers. That's the only circumstances in which I want to use it.

This has undoubtedly come up before but do they have a reason for disabling Bluetooth earphones? I can connect 6 separate controllers to mine (and it can handle 8) so surely an audio stream can’t be that hard

The Bluetooth chipset inside the Switch would introduce lag to the sound.

The dongles based headsets that work with the PS4 and Switch use a bastardised version of the Bluetooth protocol to reduce the latency.

There's also problems with the quality of the sound when the mic is enabled. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/duplex-high-quality-audio-for-bluetooth

I picked up Wolfenstein over the weekend. Looks lovely and all that, but how in zezus butt do you select a different save slot/alter difficulty/manual save etc? The options are all there but you can’t move over to any of them using and button or touch screen?!

I'm sure you have discovered by now, same thing happened to me, had to reboot switch, was fine after that.

Ugh. My Switch would not start up - totally dead, apparently.

I had forgotten it had done this once before, and is a thing - just needed a hard reset (press and hold the power button for 15s, then press once to turn on).

Just a reminder/info for any Switch newbies.

Is Captain Toad an exact replica of the Wii U version? I found the camera control annoying and clumsy, mainly  the zoom. One was too far, one was too close! Great game otherwise.

They've added more camera options, as well as four new Super Mario Odyssey themed levels (at the cost of removing the Super Mario 3D World ones).

It's become my new favourite game to play drunk.

Had so much fun at the weekend with it and a bottle of red wine, becoming angrier and angrier at Toad and his idiotic mannerisms and voice, searching bitterly for the stupid hide and seek pixel, maddening myself at my own lack of good aim on the mine cart, and convulsing with frustration at not being able to work out how to reach a diamond which turns out to be simple in the end. It's like glorious colourful stress ball with whimsical music.

10/10

I have the complete opposite experience of the Pro pad. The shoulder buttons all feel great (and make Yoku's Island particularly satisfying to play), the D-Pad's good (at least better than the PS4 and X1 ones for me), and the battery seems to last for ages. I charged one of mine up this week for the hell of it because I noticed it had finally reached about 50% charge after goodness knows how long.

The d-pad isn’t an issue if you buy one now, supposedly. My launch one is a directional lottery.

Glad they fixed that. If you have a later one, and one with a good battery, it’s a decent pad. Much, much nicer than Sony’s standard controller for the PS4.

Because I have an Xbox Elite pad which is sexual, and I'm not paying £60 fuck that for a laugh.

I’m not paying £60 for a pro controller, says man who paid £120 for a pro controller.
