Those smeary emulator-filter style graphic enhancements look nasty, though.

Oh they are, they all got switched off straight away.  Apart from Bloom, which just gives everything a pretty, understated lighting effect.   Oh, and the side panels, which are a good idea that soften the borders by duplicating the on screen colours..like those telly's with the 'ambient lighting', or whatever it's called.

Flashback, by contrast, has a nice involved control scheme and satisfying character to control, starts very strongly, loaded with clever, interesting multiscreen puzzles to solve, but gradually declines into meandering, overstretched challenges and overstays its welcome; so the beginning of the game is easy to return to and remains a pleasure, but actually completing the game these days feels rather more a chore.

*the dramatic alien world does a lot of the work here - Eric Chahi's flare for visual design never more evident (though Future Wars does have its moments)

I don't recall it being too much of a chore towards the end?  The game show, or the alien wold?  But like I said...it has been 25 years.  I have forgotten probably more than is in my brain right now.

I do recall my favourite bits being the city, getting a job and travelling on the train...escorting someone...encountering flying bad guys for the first time!

Pretty much. I thought it'd be quite different because you spend most of your time flying around on rooftops and fighting giants, but it's very familiar. I only played an hour or so at a friend's place, though.

I replayed it on the Mega Drive (the platform they targeted during dev) a few years ago. The first three areas hold up very well, but it tapers off badly towards the end - combat against the blobby aliens is either dull or frustratingly impossible, depending on whether you're in the open or in an enclosed space, and there are a few bits of crappy design (including a moment in the late game where you have to shoot a door to open it, despite no other door in the game opening when you shoot it, and a stupidly hidden lift *right* at the very last moment of the game). The promise of the teleporter you get late game is never really fulfilled. Generally could have done with more time in the oven, I suspect.

I wouldn't buy it again, but I don't begrudge anyone for having fun with it. Those smeary emulator-filter style graphic enhancements look nasty, though.

I thought it was an Amiga game which was ported to Mega Drive?

Are the Crash games actually good other than for nostalgia? I watched a bit of a playthrough and wasn’t sold on the platforming/enemie design/crates.

Tropical Freeze looks better to me, though neither on the same level as  2D Mario.

I really don't get it.  I always thought the original Crash was crap.  The 1st level bit in Uncharted 4 very nearly put me off Uncharted.  Really don't understand the fascination personally.

Crash was mediocre but sold to kids so they loved it. It's not bad, it's just not good either.

Had the Switch for about a week now and it has quickly become my console of choice.  Mainly what I love about it is playing Triple A titles in handheld mode while the kids and wife watch TV.

I have gone on a bit of a spending spree and here's what I got for it so far:

200gb Sandisk Ultra MicroSD card

Skull & Co. Gripcase - makes playing the Switch in handheld mode extremely comfortable.  The case that it comes with is also perfect for storing and commuting

Mario Odyssey - spent the most time with this as I'm playing it through with my 5 year old.  Betters Mario 64 for me so far as the best Mario of all time and we're still only on the 4th world!

Zelda BOTW - have barely touched it, but dying to get stuck in on my holiday in July.  I'm expecting pure magic.

Mario Kart 8 - missed the Wii U version so this is just loveliness.  Won quite a few online matches too, but focusing on unlocking stuff in single player first.

Hollow Knight - still haven't tried it, but heard it's amazing

Outlast and Outlast 2 - mainly downloaded this for my wife who is really into horror / psychological thrillers etc (and got a really good deal on the South African eshop).

Lumines Remastered - lovely puzzler for those not-so-quick bursts

Bayonetta 2 - haven't played it yet, but I guess I'm in for a treat when I get around to starting it

Fortnite - no brainer downloading the most popular game on the planet for free and trying it out, but after a couple of goes I'm clueless as to what to do so I think I might uninstall

Yoku's Island Express - thank you for the recommendation rllmuk...this game just brings a smile to my face.

Regret not buying Splatoon 2 on sale, but I can't bring myself to buy it at full price anymore

Here's my wishlist, so would appreciate your advice on what's worth getting and which games I should pass on:

Sonic Mania - really want this, but holding out as I saw there was a new definitive version coming out soon

Donkey Kong Country - think I might wait for a price drop to get this

Puyo Puyo x Tetris - worth it?

Owlboy - any good?

Layers of Fear - as good as the Outlast series, or pass?

Worms WMD - is this the ultimate version?

Fast RMX - craving Wipeout and F-Zero, but heard it's not that great.

Chess Ultra - love me some chess action and also thought it would be good to teach my son the basics.

Pinball FX 3 - I really want this but can't justify re-buying all the tables (already have them all on Android).  Wish there was cross-play

Any other titles I should consider?

Also I need some friends.  Is there a list of rllmukers about anywhere?

I enjoyed it quite a lot, but it's not as good as Outlast. Still got a few decent scares, and creates a good atmosphere.

They're kind of alright? 6/10 stuff throughout really if there's no Nostalgia there, nostalgia takes the first up to a 7 and the other 2 8s probably.

Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer since Mario World (although I've not played NSMBU and hear that's excellent.)

Another great port, currently sitting at the top of the amazon.co.uk chart. Donkey Kong is about to get severely outsold on his home turf.

Whoever wins, we lose.

I used to think that too, but in a Retro Gamer interview Cuisset said the MD was their primary target platform, and everything else was ported off that, even though the Amiga version came out first.

Repeated in this Nintendolife interview.

Wow. I also always thought it was a computer game ported to consoles afterwards.

Another one who played and hated Crash back in the day. And hated it afresh in its Uncharted 4 cameo.

You couldn't pay me to play that shit again, let alone soil my Switch with it. Fuck you Crash Bandycunt.

Kind of alright yeah.

Naughty Dog specialise in making technically very impressive for the time videogames that wow people on release, but are just okay to good rather than amazing in key areas like gameplay and controls, even at the time they come out. Inevitably they tend not to age particularly well.

The quality of Tropical Freeze will still be celebrated in 100 years time.

I loved the Crash reference in UC4 as there is a later bit where Nathan himself is running out of the screen away from a big boulder, thought it was a great little bit of self-reference (and if you are so inclined, a comment on how the tech moved forward while the gameplay did not).
