Stupid question time #3592

Can you use a wired controller on the Switch whilst undocked at the same time using the Joycons? Or do the wired controllers use a full size USB connection?

Pretty sure they are docked only.. i'm sure someone will say otherwise.

Right, it's a bit hit and miss on this front. You can, but under certain circumstances:

You'll need a UBS3.0 to USB C converter

Your controller can't draw too much power from the unit.

So in otherwords, your mileage will vary. It's the main reason I'm aching for the Hori Hubstand to come out, as you can do tabletop with a power supply and have USB ports available.

Right, strange as it may seem I'm only just about to unpack and charge up the switch I got last week (been away and didn't have chance to play with it before going).  Any do's and dont's for a first time switch user?

Do: Read the FAQ on page one of this thread.

Don't: Put the Switch in the dock upside down

Oh, didn’t know that, cheers. It’s just plugged into a random USB plug adapter thing. So can you get specifically more powerful ones of those, and if so can you blow up your phone if you plug it in to that accidentally?

Get one of these: https://amzn.to/2lkbAau

Plug your Switch into the IQ port and it'll charge nice and fast.

Don’t put the Joycons in the grips backwards.

So may as well for the extra few pounds, just get an SF30 Pro then.

Like retro games and/or Retro Gamer magazine? You can get a 6 month sub for £26 with a free N30 pro at the moment:

https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/8bitdo/#print

The SF30 Pro and N30 Pro are worlds apart though.

The N30 Pro existed prior to the Switch and doesn't have motion sensing (or rumble?) and plenty of folk say the sticks aren't great.

The SF30 Pro was announced as the 8bitdo controller for Switch.  I use one for 80% of my Switch play (basically when it's charged and I'm playing TV mode) and I love it.

I've never used a Switch Pro controller though.

It's true it doesn't have rumble or motion, but the sticks are fine. Better than the Vita, at least.

I'm 95% buying a Switch "for my son" this week.  Is it still just the standard blue/red or grey combos or are there cooler editions out there?

Also, what are the essentials I need to get me by for the first month (besides Zelda, Mario, a big memory card and a screen protector)?

You have more than enough with Mario and Zelda, plus there's Fortnite now which is free. I wouldn't bother with a memory card until you need one, you can fit a lot on the internal memory particularly if you're going physical for retail games.

A screen protector and a case are the only essential accessories to begin with imo.

I wouldn't bother with a memory card for a while unless you bought Mario and Zelda digitally.

There's loads of games I can recommend, but if you get into Breath of the Wild you will be engrossed for quite some time anyway.

There's also quite a lot of demos on the store, fortnite is free to download, and stardew Valley is one of the best bang for your buck games out there.

Enjoy the Switch, and let your son play it sometimes.

Simplygames are doing the console only for £249 next day atm.  Can recommend them.  Got everything the next day as promised.  Although you can't have it sent to a separate address on their website, you can have dpd leave it in a safe place (front porch etc) if you check your confirmation emails. If you order games at the same time as the console they also don't charge p + p for them either which is nice.

Cheers for that.  I'm getting the Mario Odyssey Switch bundle, which I think gives you a code to download the digital version of Mario.  Not sure if it'll fit on the internal storage.

I live in Dubai.  Getting the Mario bundle for £310.  It comes with the system, the game and a case.  I think that's alright, no?
