The SR button on my joy con stopped working

"Thank you for using the official Nintendo Repair Service.

Our engineers have inspected your Switch joy-con right blue and can confirm that a payment of £29.00 is required for us to complete the repair due to Operating system problem.

Please contact a member of our Support Team on 0345 60 50 247 who will be happy to provide additional information regarding the repair and process any payments as required."

Operating system? You what mate

That's fucked. You can buy a brand new Joycon for not much more than that (singles have to be grey though).

My right joycon stopped pairing with the console, and I send it off for repair. They sent it back saying they found no fault, but it was fixed anyway!

Sorry, no, I was just waffling about me not liking Go Mobile.  I've not seen anything Go Switch related to having to leave the house.  All I've seen confirmed is that you can link Mobile to Switch and port over Pokemon...kind of forcing you to use Go Mobile if you want an easier or more complete experience?

Watch a video, you may be surprised, it looks great, and retains lots of elements from Red / Blue.

The 'Go' bit in Let's Go simply replaces the Safari Zone.  Instead of getting bait, rocks and balls to try to catch Pokemon, you can import Pokemon from Go into the park in Let's Go and catch them, at which point they are no longer in Go - e.g. transferring.  In Go you then receive candy.  And the ball hardware that you're not interested in doubles up as a Go Plus for Go - but you won't be interested anyway.  I guess the Go trading will make catching them all really easy (I have 150 or the 151 on my Go account for example) but why would you want to do that.

Then swap out wild Pokemon for an improved catch mechanism (more skill involved in movement based over selecting throw ball from a menu) and loose out on the 1 on 1 battles and that's that.

The good news is it's both a Switch game and a Pokemon game, which means you can most probably buy at launch, play and sell with very minimal monetary loss.  It'll hold value like no other mass produced millions selling video game.  Then we are back to main series Pokemon next year.

Yeah. If they're arguing it's software then surely that can't be my fault.

I really don't like the character designs, but it has potential for fun in local multiplayer.

That was the first thing that came to my mind as well. Probably something for off-topic, but both the male and female characters looked like they had zero percent body fat and all seemed to conform to some sort of "idealistic body shape". I know they're meant to be athletes, but look around current top-tier sports men and women and you'll see a wide range of shapes out there!

I'm sure that's a mistake, they've picked the wrong category or something. If you ring I'm sure they'll 'clarify'. But their repair cost is outrageous.

If you bought it less than 2 years ago, just return the whole console for a refund as faulty then buy another. You shouldn't have to pay for Nintendo's unreliable hardware, that's ridiculous. Other option is to make a claim for faulty goods through the Small Claims Court, and watch Nintendo back down.

Do the first thing, not the second. All that will happen with the small claims route is that Nintendo simply won't turn up and you'll get a defaulted victory that you will then have to pay a solicitor to chase up.

This is terrible advice. Consumer rights in this country are very weak in practice and you are unlikely to win any case against a retailer without spending money. The only recourse you really have is under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 or the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and neither of those sets any kind of limit on how long things should be expected to last. Only that they should last a reasonable time. You might argue that 2 years is not a reasonable time, but that would depend on how it was used what condition it was kept in and any number of other variables the retailer can argue led to the fault.

The other avenue is to argue that the item was not fit for purpose when it was sold to you, but crucially it would be up to you to prove this. A very difficult and potentially expensive thing to do. The only option Strafe has is to contact the retailer and argue that the item was not fit for purpose and hope they replace it, or to appeal to Nintendo's good nature to waive the fee. The legal route is expensive and risky and the law is against you.

I appreciate the principle of it but £29 is not worth that level of hassle, let alone losing my precious saved games as we don’t have cloud saves yet.

Yeah, small claims are good against individuals (a landlord for example), against a big company you are just pissing in the wind. It would cost them more than your claim to pay their legal team to defend it - but they won't pay out by default otherwise it would just encourage specious claims. So they just let people bang their heads against a wall for years, screaming what they imagine to be the magic incantation "Sales of goods act!!!"

For the one in a hundred who doggedly takes it to conclusion - sure, they'll pay out on that. But what a waste of your valuable time on Earth.

You'd probably right, just irritating that Nintendo is charging money for something which is their fault. It's why Amazon stopped selling Nintendo products for a while, because they refused to acknowledge their faulty hardware.

I understand, it is frustrating to see in reality just how little leverage is on the consumers side. Which is why going back to the retailer is usually your best bet, they may have an enlightened returns policy (as Amazon, and no doubt why they get pissed off with Nintendo).

Do you expect it to be the ribbon cable for the button that is the problem?
If so, I have a right joy con that is fully borked and I shorted the pins out to use it for hacking the system, I'd hapilly pop the ribbon cable out of it and sent you that if you are comfortable taking your one apart to replace it.

** EDIT ** Ah, I've just seen which one SR is, it's on the ribbon strip that I've used with the pins :(

Problem being he has already thrown away his consumer rights by going to the manufacturer, never do that (I did with my joy con....) so all he can do is argue the toss with Nintendo, I would just ring them.

Apparently, the Switch’s headphone port can handle comms and Fortnite’s support of it is being unlocked today.. Can anyone confirm if this has happened? Pretty big news if true..

There was an update for it today, and somebody confirmed it to be working in the fortnite thread.

I wish the pro controller had an audio jack.

If I wanted to possible hack my switch at a later date to do homebrew, so I can look at snes9x or similar should I look to leave the console on 4.0.1 as long as possible for best results.

I think I have read that the switch has a hardware exploit that is unpatchable. So am i right in thinking that it wouldn'y matter even if i was to update to 5.1.0 which I think is the latest?

“We’ve been working on the hardware for a long time, almost six years,” he told Varietyin a recent interview. “That’s more than almost any third party.”
During that time Panic Button released original work, but also were the team in charge of bringing “Rocket League,” “Doom,” and soon “Wolfenstein II” to Nintendo’s hybrid console. He said the company is working on another major port expected to be announced next month.

Could well be, but why hold that back a month if so - why not just announce at the same time as the others this E3.

Doing it later suggests to me it's an older title they want to give some breathing room from E3. Could be Fallout......

No. Apart from it being shown on a store listing, there's been no announcement. Unless I missed it.

I'm not sure they'd describe that as a 'port' would they - if it's releasing at the same time.

I think this will be something older...
