Nah, it doesn’t line up. They’d be making a competitor for their own title. It has to have a twist.

Which title? The only other racing game they've got out is Mario Kart, and F-Zero hasn't seen the light of day since 2003.

Why the fuck would you have a Starfox racing game when all anyone wants is F-Zero?

'All anyone wants' is more like a few thousand people on the internet. Star Fox may not be the most popular Nintendo franchise around but it's certainly more popular than F-Zero will ever be, nestled snugly at the bottom of the popular Nintendo franchise list with Ice Climbers and Wave Race.

Seems to me like an attempt to give the fanbase a new F-Zero type game without hemorrhaging money.

I wouldn't really consider a futuristic racing game like Fzero or Wipeout a direct competitor to Mario Kart. Besides they've already sold 9 million or whatever it is.

They don’t saturate their own genres though, at least not traditionally. It’s of course not impossible but to me if they’re gonna come out and announce Star Fox is now a racer there has to be more to it than “just” being a racer. Just look at all the inspiration from different games/genres they took on board with BotW. Assuming this is true Retro have been at this for a good few years now, it’s definitely not going to be as simple as “you can race in the air, on land and water!”

I'm assuming (if any of this is actually real) they've gone with StarFox rather than F-Zero for the simple reason that one has weapons and the other doesn't (and wouldn't really be the same at all if they were added). If they wanted a racer with weapons, F-Zero was never even a consideration I would say.

Considering Star Fox had a score attack thing back in the SNES days (Official Competition) as a pre-launch thing, could this be a fully online score attack ultimate leaderboard thing?

The racing seems to be odd, but if it's about stunt flying your way to the end of a course gaining a max score, this could easily turn into SSX in Space and be my next favourite game (sorry, Hades).

But didn't Nintendo approach Criterion fairly recently and ask them if they fancied working on an F-zero title? Doesn't sound like something they'd do if they were trying to leave the franchise behind and didn't think anyone at all wanted it.

I suspect a new F-Zero, and certainly a new Waverave, would sell perfectly well. In truth, it's quite possible both of those might be carrying less stigma than StarFox these days as well anyway.

They had F-Zero and Mario Kart for three generations straight. On N64 they also had Diddy Kong Racing. They've had the Excite series in the past, Stunt Race FX, Wave Rave etc.

Obviously we don't have game play information yet but I'd wager it'll be significantly different to their other racing games.

The thing about it that rings true for me is that racing games work very well online so it'll fit right in with the new online service.

Quick question guys,

You know how at the moment a game released on all formats will release on say Xbox and PS4, PC etc at the same time with a Switch version generally coming later, is that something that in time won't happen and they'll all release together?

Reading about Rage 2 just got me curious as an (unnoficial) article I was reading claims that a Switch version will be released at some point after the others get it

I'd say it will depend on how technically ambitious the base game is, for games designed with NS as the baseline (your average Japanese third-party effort/indie game), simultaneous release is easy enough.

Games like RAGE 2, where they have enough trouble getting it working well on home consoles and are then expected to downgrade it massively to fit onto the Switch during development too is more problematic. Bluepoint made a comment about their experience working on downgrading Titanfall to X360 with a moving target of the in development X1/PC base version, not a pleasant experience for them, and they are the best in the business when it comes to ports.

That was back in 2011, I’m fairly confident they haven’t forgotten about either of those games, new games take time though, which is why we’ve been stuck with a lot of Wii U ports so far. ;)

We’re getting Prime 4, at this point anything is possible!

I have no interest whatsoever in Starfox, and virtually no interest in racing games, and yet the idea of a hub-based flying racing game with story-based missions and a bit of exploration outside of the racing is inexplicably appealing to me. If that's what it ends up being.

pretty sure F-Zero is around the 400k mark each for X and GX based on the Players Choice criteria.

Oh wow, his name is two words? Star Fox? It always looks like one word on the covers.

Its. The name is of the team. The character name is Fox McCloud.

Also, what were the SNES sales? I think the main issue with Star Fox is that is has been such a diverse series. Never giving us a definitive version (although some would argue 64 is just that), which is asking for trouble when Nintendo is itching for weirdo things to add to the series. Even Zero was adding stupid stuff and that's when helmed by Platinum of all studios. I have some faith in Retro for this, as DKC seems to agree that they know arcade action, but still, a new Star Fox does feel a bit like flogging a dead horse.

Not only that but a combination of Star Fox/Wing being a genuine system seller. But yeah, not selling on the Wii probably hurt it too. I'm hoping this is another bollocks Eurogamer rumour and they're not doing this weird crossover thing.

Regarding the StarFox Grand Prix rumour. Whilst we all associate a Grand Prix with racing it does not necessarily have to be to do with racing.  It could be any competitive event. I’m sure I’ve seen adverts for martial arts contests which they’ve called a Grand Prix.

So what are you saying it could be 1v1 fighting game, a bowls tournament, chess simulator?
