I like that they’re confident enough in their E3 stuff that they can afford to just casually announce MH is coming right before.

Let’s hope so. They’ve announced this, online service and that portable dock thingy in a week, seems like they’re clearing the decks for a load of new game announcements. Add to that the leek of loads of placeholders for new games and it would suggest things are looking good.

It covers up to 8 switches - each of the accounts in the family group can be on a separate device, they will all be covered. The subscription covers the account, and whichever device that account is on gets access.

Confirmation? somesortofacatch.gif

To address PS+, because some have mentioned it as a value comparison and it's obviously a different kettle...

I've played one PS+ game during my two years as a PS4 subscriber, so for me it's really poor value on that side. So too for heavy gamers who've either played most of its offerings, or only haven't because they don't care to. A cheaper no-games sub is a thought, but I've had another idea: a points-based system. With your £50 sub you'd get 50 points to spend on the store (no expiry), with premium PS+ games costing 10 points. All ‘bought’ games would then run offline with no expiry. Advantages:

— We'd own our downloaded games for ever (or at least for the life of the console if no future BC)

— We could download games that were added during a lapse in our subs, from the entire selection of PS+ games to that date

— All store games would be purchasable with points, but of course the 10-point limit would only apply to PS+ titles

— £50 digital games would all come with 10 points (if bought with money), so if you wanted anything from the store you'd be getting the same value as £40 physical minus resale

The last one's good for Sony because they'd sell more digital games at full whack (no middlemen), and good for us if you didn't mind the lack of resale and wanted a store game, because you'd get improved value alongside the benefit of no disc-swapping. I'd probably spend my annual 50 on a single new game.

Portable dock thingy?

All this talk of third-party docks bricking Switches has me concerned. In terms of simply charging the thing, am I OK to use an existing phone charger or do I need to use the official Switch charger? I’m going on holiday soon and was planning to use a Samsung USB-C phone charger, but obviously don’t want to damage the thing.

Their Directs are the opposite of the E3 corporate cringeworthy spin.

Yeah, Mrs Dudley and me happily sit down to watch a Direct and end up scribbling down several games we're going to want, especially on a Nindies one.

I can't imagine us doing that for a full 2 hour Sony deal.

I've used the charger from my Nexus 5X to charge my switch fine, as well as a bog standard USB-C cable connected to my power bank.

How much are these proposed points worth? 1 point=£1? Given that fullprice digital sales are going up anyway, without any need to incentivise customers, seems the only real benefit for this proposed system is the consumer, which usually means somebody else takes the hit elsewhere. Nice idea but seems too good for the consumer to ever be implemented.

That 'lack of confidence' is spreading....well, well, well....this'll cause some u-turns

Doesn't seem much different from last year in that respect, they spent the vast majority of their runtime showing off games, primarily first party. I take it you never watched any of the other conferences given this post?

Ironically, I think given some of these comments, clearly some people only watched a single E3 presentation last year ;)

E3 is meant to be a spectacle afterall, the annual American-centric blowout which the rest of the world watches too. Some sense of effort needs to be put in to make it worth bothering with doing a long presentation of your best goods to the World's press, otherwise dump it onto YouTube at any fucking time of the year.

It’s all about the 56k Ohm resistor.  Maybe the Nyko dock skimped on having one?

That tweet might not be entirely accurate. From the PS Blog today:

Quote

It’s been an exceptional year for games, thanks to genre-defining masterworks like A Way Out, Far Cry 5, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, and Moss.

But 2018 is just getting started. To ring in a new year of incredible new gaming experiences, the PlayStation team is planning a new E3 Showcase — and we’re inviting all of our closest friends. That means you!

Join us on Monday, June 11 starting at 6:00pm Pacific Time as we share a preview of what’s next for PlayStation. We’ll broadcast the show live from E3 2018 in Los Angeles, California via live.playstation.com, Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook.

In a rare break from tradition, we wanted to give you an early glimpse at what to expect heading into the Showcase on June 11. PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios will be at E3 in full force to provide you with an exclusive look at four upcoming titles: Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch, Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, and The Last of Us Part II from Naughty Dog.

Of course, we’ll have stellar announcements from third-party publishers and independent developers, who are all busy devising innovative new experiences that will make your heart race and your emotions soar — whether you’re playing on PS4, PS4 Pro, or PS VR.

Stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog to learn a bit more about what’s in store as we count down to June 11, 2018 and another exciting E3 season.

Our journey begins Monday, June 11 starting at 6:00pm Pacific time. Will you join us?

The "break from tradition" just seems to be confirmation of four of the big games they'll be focusing on. Otherwise, it's still a Live show with big games, announcements from third-party and indies.

Officially £1 per point for ease of understanding, yeah, so you'd be able to buy 10 points for around £8 online. I hated having to convert MS points to pounds, but believe in some kind of credit system to offer users greater choice while still locking them in to the service. Too good? Possibly, but things are heading that way in general and it might be that Sony are postponing the inevitable.

For example, I've downloaded three PS4 games this year:

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture — PS+ (Nov '16)

What Remains of Edith Finch — £16

Super Cloudbuilt — £6.50

So you can see why I'm in favour of a credit-for-anything-on-the-store service, where a 12-month sub would've covered those with change. You've raised the main hurdle, as it requires Sony to pay X amount per Y credit sales to their content providers. If 20% of The Last of Us II's sales were to points, for example, this would have to be a sizeable figure for Naughty Dog. But it's perfectly doable if the will's there, and this anti-choice disparity between PS+ and the majority of entertainment subs is growing.

I loved N+ originally on the Xbox 360 but the 'bigger better' years in the making N++ on PS4 never really grabbed me at all, and I was never sure why really.

Can see it working better on the go on Switch though, but not sure the JoyCon sticks offer the required level of precision for such a demanding game.

Most conferences are shite though. I prefer directs TBH. Just shows you the games and maybe someone talking about them, not some bell end z list celebs talking of an auto cue and attempting to appeal to teenagers.

Why are they talking about an auto cue?? Weird

The special compendium edition of Octopath Traveler is £31.99 on Argos, with a map, pop up book and some tatty coin. (They're selling the standard game for £44.49 so don't blame me if they don't honour it!) I had to add something else to my order that was in stock to get the order to process and then delivery was four quid, so it works out a bit more than £31.99 in total, but still!

Credit to the Cheap Arse Era thread on Resetera!

Raging Justice is hard!

Enemies can still hit you while you’re wailing on them, so punching and kicking doesn’t really work, which is a bit unsatisfying... but what feels unfair is that they can stun you, meaning you can get locked into a health-draining misadventure.

I’ve lost about 15 lives and I’m only at stage 3! I do want to keep at it, the art style is just so charming, but god damn

How come people expect having online servers for free on Switch is a thing, all the mentions on the shitty nes games and cloud saves that you have to pay for (same as PS4 and Xbox will do the same as soon as they are relevant again) and no one has batted an eyelid about Nintendo servers being part of the cost - the other option is Destiny where you get shite p2p servers on a system you pay online for - dedicated servers for all the games that are out now let alone during the lifetime of the switch for 18/31 a year is a bargain!

And that’s RRP, no doubt you will be able to pay even less - the nes games are a bonus, the cloud saves feature matching Sony - the only valid criticism is the time delay and godawful voice chat.

Charging for online has always been a scam.  If you've paid full price for a game the cost of bandwidth/servers is trivial.   Hence MS & Sony having to bundle games to justify it.   Online is free on PC and that works fine.

And although servers are obviously a cost, when I last researched them a few years ago I found that most big games didn't have any in the UK, and only one location in Ireland. About a dozen locations in the US and a few more dotted around was common.

Even at the speed of light, those US servers are suboptimal for high-level play in certain games, so if Nintendo were rolling out servers in the UK for this price then I'd very much welcome it. If we all had faster matchmaking with ~30ms pings.
