If it means we might get online enabled Super Mario Kart, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Lost Vikings, etc. then I’m all in. Take my £18 now.

They paid off some of their biggest licensees with the Mini consoles, but given the price of their online offering, I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect other companies to not be paid by Nintendo for the rights to use their games as an incentive for you to pay Nintendo money so given that, it'll be interesting to see who else they can convince to give away their software for little financial reward. All the games mentioned so far are owned by Nintendo outright.

Yeah, they should have done that absolutely. A mental, cheap omission IMO.

Did that 3rd party dock with a built-in ethernet port ever come out? Was it any good/anyone get one?

Even if it did, I'd steer well clear of any third party dock at the moment. Tonne of problems with the USB-C connectivity.

I recently sold my unopened DS usb WiFi adaptor for £20 or so on eBay, so it’s worth buying 10,000 of those silly phone adapters and retiring on the eventual profits.

so (in my case) they are taking away some of the functionality of MarioKart unless I give them 18 quid a year?

Not only that, if you do fork out for it there will be fewer people available to play against than there are now.

Imagine going back in time and telling your childhood self that, while most of your mates were now enjoying an amazing gaming future, you were still buying NES games.

Since you can have a maximum of eight users per console, is the family option not just for that? They might offer a two-console limit with users spread between them, I suppose.

My first console was a SNES. I bought an Analogue Super NT this year and a pile of SFC games.

Last year I bought a SNES classic, the year before a NES classic.

I don't think there is a problem here.

Good games are good games, if they are fun to play, who cares hire old they might be.

Imagine listening to music and watching films from different eras too.

Imagine getting a free Netflix film every month, and this month it's Ghostbusters II.

Most of the games I've played over the past year have been retro, but they've had their time in the sun and shouldn't be charged for any more.

There are loads of old films on Netflix worth watching just as there are loads of old games worth playing.

If there's a market for them why shouldn't they charge? They've just sold 4 million SNES minis.

Tbh it all depends where they take this. An ever increasing library of Nintendo games spanning the SNES, N64 and GameCube eras for £20 a year sounds overly generous for a company used to charging £6 for the likes of Mario World alone. I'm interested to see their plans and how it evolves.

Exactly. The online-updated NES library's a great idea as a small supplement (Track & Field II!). The SNES library's a bigger deal, but still belongs as a minor perk in any modern subscription service. All games up to and including the GC era with added online features would be another matter.

And it does sound as if the family option covers up to eight user accounts on the same Switch.

It's intended as a supplement or part of a package which includes online play.

If you're expecting them to include new releases too I think you'd be looking at more than £20.

Nah, see my edit. A comprehensive history of previous Nintendo eras with leaderboards and/or multiplayer for £20. Especially if they set the Wii as their cut-off (or 2008 for a ten-year trail), leaving only U and new games as paid-fors.

The family sub should cover at least two Switches if it doesn't. The fact that it mentions eight users and that's the limit per Switch is how I'm reading it.

That would be super but I can't imagine them being that generous.

This is why they need to state their intentions. Is it a revolving selection of games that changes at regular intervals, or an ever expanding library potentially offering hundreds of games playable at any time for just £20 per year?

The latter just seems implausible as it would be way beyond the value of any other similar service.

And if we don't wish to subscribe can we buy the games individually?

Lots of unanswered questions.

It covers up to 8 switches - each of the accounts in the family group can be on a separate device, they will all be covered. The subscription covers the account, and whichever device that account is on gets access.
