If it was mandatory would you :P

It is a negligible amount after all.

I'd do it anyway, it's just not something I think about and there's nowhere that makes it immediately obvious that it's even an option.

Perhaps it could be advertised better. Maybe do an Rllmuk Direct ;)

at launch?

dont think so

Not an exact price, but before launch it was announced as being 2000 - 3000 yen: https://www.theverge.com/2017/2/1/14474430/nintendo-switch-online-service-price.  It was due to launch in Autumn 2017: https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/13/14261018/nintendo-switch-paid-online-subscription-service-membership but has been delayed by a year from then.

The US (and EU) pricing was confirmed back in July last year: https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/1/15727548/nintendo-switch-online-20-dollars-a-year.

Anyway surely extricating locked saves is the entire point of the exercise? PS4 for example has account locked saves, you just are only able to restore them back to the same account. In your post above, I don't know how you define a system locked save. Perhaps it refers to MMO type games where your 'save' is on someone else's server.

A save which is locked to that particular bit of hardware, like copy-protected saves have been in the past. The current situation with the Nintendo Switch means that actually all saves are system locked saves as they are both account and hardware locked at present (which is the difference with every other bit of gaming hardware which allows you to copy the saves elsewhere still), the paid cloud backup is the first time you'll be able to have a duplicate of any of those saves elsewhere, but maybe this will not apply to some copy-protected saves, hence the wording in the PR.

I agree with a lot of people that it feels like a bad move because of the way they did it. I don't really want to be paying extra money for the online service as it still feels poorly implemented and apart from the NES games - it feels like a free service.

But the main problem seems to be perception. If they'd launched an online service out of the box and included a code for 18 months free 'Nintendo Play' (I have no idea what it's actually called) with every Switch console at launch people would shrug their shoulders and think 'Oh my free trial has finished. It was nice while it lasted.' They'd then make a decision whether they thought it was worth paying for. Instead it feels like something is being taken away in a money grab despite the fact their intentions were made clear from the start. It's basically a PR / marketing failure from Nintendo which makes it feel worse than it actually is.

What do you get for your fiver here? I honestly didn't even know you could get a membership still these days.

You get to see who negged you and then call them out over it in public.

Maybe you haven't been approved? Bad credit rating perhaps?

haha, payment has been approved but not my membership upgrade or whatever it is. They'll probably have to call a board meeting seeing as it's me ;)

or the treasurer checks them every week I think it is and so it can take a while

If it was £20 you might get instant approval :p

I think Xevious approves them in a batch at the start of the week so you might have to wait a few days.

How long does approval take?

I think they get reviewed once a week - so depending on timing it could be 6 days.

Be prepared for the revelation that 90% of your negs actually come from just one or two members who you clearly upset in a previous life. Unless that's just me

Fingers crossed the Switch family keeps moving your games forward so this is the last time.

Not a chance in hell, they’re going to keep charging people for the same NES games every time they release new hardware forever.

I'm surprised that anyone would begrudge twenty quid a year (!) to play online, though, when many of their biggest games are/will be online multiplayer and you pay more than double that for PS+, only for a load of shite games and regular service dropouts and maintenance.

Pretending that the Playstation Network still has the same problems it did eight years ago is a poor way to try to justify Nintendo’s shitty offering. The PS+ games are a thousand times better than the NES crap being shovelled out here, and they’re generally new games rather than insults that the customers have already paid for multiple times.

Think of the £18 option as discounted if you only want single user, and the £31 option as if you want more open access for multiple people (on one or multiple Switches) - still half the price.

Ah, so their shit service is actually £31, with a discount to £18 for people with no kids. Still shit value.

To be fair their games work well online, at least in my experience.

You’re lucky then, the WiFi is a shitty, cheap chip with awful connectivity, drops out constantly and they’re too cheap to even put an Ethernet port in the dock.

Put you down for a Family Membership then?

But yeah, an Ethernet connection in the dock would have been perfect!

Yeah, they should have done that absolutely. A mental, cheap omission IMO.

Did that 3rd party dock with a built-in ethernet port ever come out? Was it any good/anyone get one?

Luckily my kids are old enough to be playing a lot of Fortnite, so until Pokemon comes out thy won't want this. I'd be up for it for something interesting like Mario Maker or Animal Crossing maybe, but I've had a terrible experience with Mario Kart, and most other Nintendo games are mostly local multi for me. I won't be bothering.
