It covers other machines? I didn't realise that. Does that mean you could have a game downloaded on more than one machine with the same profiles on them?

The answer to this, and I suspect you will not be amazed, is no. You can only have your account active on one machine at a time.

So JPickford's hypothetical 7 children would have to have a Switch each and a copy of Mario Kart each, but he would ring in the saving on the online pass, that's for sure!

Set both PS4 accounts to 'Primary'.  Then both can use PS Plus perks.

(Settings) > [Account Management] > [Activate as Your Primary PS4] > [Activate].

Are they new primary by default then? I only have one PS4.

I'll try it though, ta.

Ah, oh well. That's a bit shit.

I don't mind paying for online tbh, I've done it for long enough on other systems and paid more, but charging for cloud saves is out of order. I hope there's a big backlash against it.

Keep at it - sub-accounts can definitely play online, all my kids play FIFA off the one PS+ on one console.

Re: the £18 per user online...

Do we know this for sure?

If your account is on the machine and has a sub, maybe other accounts on the same machine can go online too? Has this definitively been refuted? The "family" account might be for users linked to the main user but also on other devices.

Basically, i don't think we know for sure yet as Nintendo didn't go into that much detail.

Related and possibly mentioned - seems you will be able to put your account (and therefore your games) on more than one Switch, potentially syncing saves. If so, I'm likely to be getting more digital titles and a second Switch!

Nintendolife suggest you can, after this update.

Well, that'd be an improvement at least, but it sounds like pure conjecture on their part

We don't know about you, but to us this sounds like Nintendo is adopting the same approach used in the world of smart devices, which is dominated by iOS and Android.

It's in the FAQ.

so (in my case) they are taking away some of the functionality of MarioKart unless I give them 18 quid a year?

Or, they gave you a year for free because this service was originally planned for Sep 2017.

ok fine - i just wrongly assumed the 6-18 month wait for the whizzy spangly paid for service would be offering a better online play function. So they give us a bare bones online play service and then wait 18 months to then charge us for the same functionality.

great.

Oh thats alright then innit...

Well, yes it is.

Not saying the service being offered for £18 a year isn't crappy, but it's not exactly a cunt move by introducing a paywall out of the blue. It was always penciled in by Nintendo and never hidden that it would be happening.

I will admit, I'm not too bothered by what they are offering and won't be rushing to sign up.

Perhaps the objection is the charge itself not any imaginary "out of the blue" aspect.

It's shitty value for many and they have every right to object.

I don't agree with that. It depends on your circumstances I suppose but if all you want is to carry on playing Mario Kart, Splatoon and the upcoming Smash Bros then it's a lot cheaper than the competition.

I'm kinda curious what price people would deem acceptable? It's £1.50 a month. That's the money you'd save by switching regions when buying an eShop game!

Corrected for my case.

So £31 a year so my son and I can carry on playing mario kart online with exactly the same service we have now.

I just think it's cheeky and I see lots of defenders here saying "well I don't agree with it BUT".

No "but"s it is a poor move by Nintendo.

So surely the time to be getting annoyed about this was when they announced it over a year ago?

They've built up strong online communities for the likes of Splatoon and ARMS, hosting events and competitions, adding regular updates and features, as well as maintaining the online infrastructure itself. Why should they do all that for no return on their investment?

I 100% agree with that situation being shit, it should be a subscription per system.

It's not ideal but it does seem like the family option will allow people to invite other accounts to it which means you'd then be splitting the cost 8 ways if you organised it with friends/forumites. But yep, still shit.

if you've been playing online games on the console for a while for free, then it's not alright to suddenly charge for it. By all means, charge for playing online for games released after the service launches but retrospectively applying a charge to games people have already been enjoying online thank you very much is a shitty thing to do.

if it wasn't Nintendo people would be more up in arms.

The latter point is irrelevant to me they are adding and have added nothing to Mariokart

And I didnt get annoyed a year ago because a year ago I didnt know that

a) The service would be exactly the same bare bones system I assumed free was bare bones and paid would actyually improve

b) No idea what price they were going to charge.

Some may be able to get value from it - i you play ARMS or Splatoon I guess.

I reiterate I think it is a poor move by Nintendo.

They're not suddenly charging for it though, in fact they've have actually delayed charging for it. They were upfront about this from the beginning.

Why aren't people up in arms about paying for PS4, for a service that was previously free on PS3, and FIFTY POUNDS per year now?
