Wonder what will happen to those precious Zelda cloud saves once people stop paying their $20. Assume you'll have some sort of grace period, like PSN's 6 months, before they scrub them (though at least on Playstation you can USB back-up also)...

Knowing Nintendo, the online saves will be scrubbed the second your subscription expires, and they'll send some code that nukes the saves on the Switch too. :P

Switch games are priced at a significant premium compared to XB and PS so you could argue that the free online play should be part of that.

That's not really true though is it? I mean new releases are the same pretty much across the board on each platform - £50 is the standard RRP these days unfortunately. What was God of War recently? Tomb Raider? What will RDR II or CoD IIII be?

Unless you mean indies, in which case not a great deal Nintendo can do about the pricing policy of others really.

Are the NES games to download like Game Pass or are they streamed like PS Now?

Lol, download surely?! They can't be over 1mb each in size I'd presume?!

Although it would be typical Nintendo to fuck even that up and have it as a streaming service

Just checked - Balloon Fight ROM is 16kb in size. Although it is a funny thought to think of Nintendo having stacks and stacks of NES servers for the sole purpose of streaming the games as an alternative to making them downloadable!

I'd assume download, but there is nothing in the wording that says, these games are for to download, it just says access to x games.

Yes there is, it says you can play them offline:

For the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy these classic NES games online. Depending on the game, players can engage in online competitive or co-op multiplayer, or take turns controlling the action. Friends can even watch each other play single-player games online, and “pass the controller” at any time. Every classic NES game will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app*. It will also be possible to play these games offline.

They're basically looking at the mounds of cash that Sony and MS report from their subscriptions each year and deciding they want a piece of that pie. They are not really doing anything the other two haven't already done unfortunately.

I don't like it, but being free made them an outlier. They were leaving cash on the table.

Cloud saves are free on Xbox One.

I'm a big fan of PS+ and Games with Gold, but looking long term they done incredible damage to the smaller indie game publishers. Far too much of the user base just waits for the inevitable PS+ release and sales suffer.

Thats why the uptake on Switch for 'Nindies' has been much better.

There are no shortage of indie games on any platform.

The point being made was that sales suffer on the other systems due to people waiting for the inevitable PS+ or GWG version. Indie games certainly have been reported to do well on Switch but I don't think it's solely down to that reason. The portable nature of it makes it an ideal platform for many of these games.

I was responding to the assertion that "incredible damage" had been done to indie game publishers. I wouldn't say that seems to be the case, otherwise there would be far less indie games.

Sure but when we get reports saying they've sold better on Switch than all other platforms combined I can see the point. I hardly ever bought anything on Vita despite having a massive library of games I played a lot. There was just no need to buy them.

They’re basically forcing us to pay for cloud saves and for something which we get for free already. And some shit nes games. It’s all a bit off. It’s not a lot of cash but they’re losing some goodwill with this.

Any news on netflix/amazon video etc?

They aren't forcing anyone to do anything but, for me, as someone who gave up PSN and Gold subs a long time ago, the price seems fair for online access with regular VC content thrown in as I'll be plenty happy to play the better NES games whilst out and about. Roll on SNES and N64 VC though...

I've zero interest in Netflix/Amazon Video as my switch is, happily, a games machine not yet another media platform. Speaking of which, I cannot get enough of the highly addictive Don't Die Mr Robot. One of the better £7.19's I've spent...

Yes, and? Let's not get nit-picky here - both MS and Sony have paid online subscriptions services - Nintendo have seen the money being made and, like it or not, decided they want to join that party. Nintendo have certainly not led the way here, they've actually been incredibly slow to react and follow really. We've had free online from them for way longer than expected - and when you look at titles like Splatoon (and the behemoth that will be Smash Bros), it's not hard to see why they are doing it.

They've been incredibly slow to react insofar their online services are a shambles compared to the competition. There's really no excuse after all this time.

Was there not talk of a conference meeting at Nintendo a while back to discuss their online service and no one in the room had even seen what the competition had to offer?

We're still defined by a 12 digit friend code ffs, no messaging, no proper profiles, no way to view my friends media, no built in voice Comms, no parties, no way to properly backup save data locally... It's really bare bones.

I couldn't care less about Netflix, Amazon Prime etc but at least give us some improvements to the online service if you're now going to be charging for it. There's no getting away from the fact that probably the whole NES library fits into a 20mb rar file and in 30 minutes you can be up and running on a decent emulator with online play. Granted, you're not playing them on the switch but is that worth the price?

Why is voice comms so important to people? If I'm playing with randoms the last thing I want to do is break the illusion that I'm playing against competent adults. If I'm playing with friends we just do a group messenger call.

With integrated comms, everyone is the same. Without you have to hope everyone has the same messenger service. Some of my friends use What's App, others use Messenger. It becomes disjointed. Using an external Nintendo app is just a bizarre choice but does somewhat solve it, if people want to use it but personally I don't need another pointless app.
