They’re basically forcing us to pay for cloud saves and for something which we get for free already. And some shit nes games. It’s all a bit off. It’s not a lot of cash but they’re losing some goodwill with this.

Any news on netflix/amazon video etc?

So there's going to be 20 NES games at launch - they've confirmed 10, and said the other 10 will be named 'in the future'. They are also going to add more to the pile 'on a regular basis':

Quote

Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online:

Subscribers will have access to NES – Nintendo Switch Online, a compilation of classic NES games. The collection will initially include 20 games, with more added on a regular basis. At launch, previously announced games Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario and Super Mario Bros. 3 will be joined by Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Soccer, Super Mario Bros. and Tennis. An additional 10 launch games will be announced in the future.

If they've got any sense - they'll announce something like Waverace switch - and it'll launch shortly after Waverace 64 as a free game being added for subscribers as well. I could really see that working - new title, with the old title being added to the library just before to build some hype, bring people into the game etc. Imagine the direct - you'd have a new game announced, with the previous entry 'available right after this direct' to build hype.

They're basically looking at the mounds of cash that Sony and MS report from their subscriptions each year and deciding they want a piece of that pie. They are not really doing anything the other two haven't already done unfortunately.

I don't like it, but being free made them an outlier. They were leaving cash on the table.

It all adds up this. £50 for PSN, £40 for XBL and now £20 for Nintendo online. I don’t feel as if the first two are value for me personally so this new offering from Nintendo is even worse. These annual online subscriptions are just a licence to print money for these companies.

It's like a year ago all over again.  Nothing new here, except lots of folk moaning about the same thing.

PS+ was originally a subscription system just to get games, and online play was free.  Then they bundled online play into it, and reduced the quality of the games for a while (around ps4 launch?) and they've now hiked the price to £50 without adding any features.

Xbox Live was originally just to play online, and always cost double this, and I don't think had cloud saves on the original Xbox, or at first on 360.

This has both free games which are exclusive with online play, unlike the offerings from MS and Sony which recycle games you potentially already have for that console.

I really don't see what everyone is complaining about.  I don't think that complaining that you are already paying for XBL and PS+ is a concern to Nintendo..

The family stuff...  I see room for complaint there, especially given that Nintendo pushed to separate accounts and all the parental controls stuff.

It should really be 1 account per parent where the child accounts are on the same console.

I only pay for PS+ now as having Xbox too seems like overkill. I definitely get my money's worth from the games though and I will from this service too. Come on you get handheld SMB3 and Balloon Fight et al for free and that's just month one. £20 per year is fuck all.

They do need to release a proper headset for voice chat  which uses the console alone though. That is a fucking joke expecting people to use a phone app and a mass of wrires. I don't use it personally on any consoles but it's a bare minimum feature these days.

They should just throw a few million at whoever makes Fortnight and make billions off the kidz.

I strongly suspect Fortnite Switch to be announced at E3 and launch alongside Smash Bros with the service in September.

Hmm, it says special offers and deals not online discounts. Who knows what that means, but it could easily mean the opportunity to buy profile images, dashboard skins, virtual amiibos, tat like that.

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can't understand the negativity, when I turned on the Switch yesterday and it told me about the sub coming in September I thought it looked like a fair price. I forget what I used to pay for the hunters license to play PSO on the cube, £8.99 per month? Xbox gold at about £30 per year.

£20 per year is fine.

Am I understanding this? You pay $4 for a month and you get 20 NES games? I guess I'm misunderstanding something because it seems incredibly unlike Nintendo to go from charging you four quid per NES game on their old virtual console services, to giving twenty away for the same price.

No, you pay less than $2 a month with a yearly subscription.

I don't mind the price personally. I'll happily pay it.

The people complaining about online not being free anymore do realise Nintendo were crystal clear and upfront about the fact the free online play was time limited.

I get that. Switch games are priced at a significant premium compared to XB and PS so you could argue that the free online play should be part of that.

I'm willing to bet that there's going to be a lot of surprised Switch owners with the move to the subscription model.

Your average Switch owner doesn't consume Edge magazine and Eurogamer and I don't remember any message in the console itself.

That's not true they just hold their value for longer. God of War was 50 odd quid for example.

Would be nice to have voice comms on Switch online without fafffing around with an app. Wondering if there is a technical reason why they haven't implemented it? Or just want to stop kids been exposed to potty mouthed people online...

Be interesting to see if any voice comms come with Fortnite if it gets a switch relase. Be quite handy in squad mode.

Also a shame Nintendo have not provided a means to backup game saves to a memory stick yet either.. I was hoping this would be announced with the recent update on the online system. Although cloud saving is great but its a shame its behind a paywall (even if it is a low cost of entry). It should be free IMHO if there are no alternatives provided.

Edge and Eurogamer are hardly the main portals of communication for anyone, let alone Nintendo.

It's no different than Sony moving to a paid model with PS4.

I agree cloud saves should be free for everyone and they shouldn't be waiting until September to offer as part of this package either, it should be implemented immediately.

Why is voice comms so important to people? If I'm playing with randoms the last thing I want to do is break the illusion that I'm playing against competent adults. If I'm playing with friends we just do a group messenger call.

Because integrated voice comms is so much better.

Well it would be nice to be given the option no?

Found playing say Fortnite in a squad makes life much more easier (and fun) with voice. Against randoms I largely agree although used to use voice lots back when Xbox live was originally released not so much now.. too many potty mouthed teenagers around.

Think the key point is though there is an expectation these days that integrated voice comms forms part of an online experience. Same as being able to save your games off onto a removable device as well as cloud.

I like to play with headphones on. Having to listen to voice comms over my phone alongside game audio through my headphones is a pain in the arse.

Because it's part of the bare minimum requirements for these services. Nintendo's solution is a mess.

You don't need to use a phone on PS4 or Xbox One or Steam, and they are the current standard.
