Am I understanding this? You pay $4 for a month and you get 20 NES games? I guess I'm misunderstanding something because it seems incredibly unlike Nintendo to go from charging you four quid per NES game on their old virtual console services, to giving twenty away for the same price.

After they have sold millions of NES classic consoles for £60 a pop i sure as hell would expect them to charge a small amount each month. I don't care about NES games anymore, I have a NES Classic, played the games countless times on ports/re releases. Even online play doesn't phase me much, barely any NES games would work that great multiplayer anyway.

You probably rent them, same as PS+.

I mean, it's also very weird to me that the same people who enthusiastically pay, what, £60 for an NES Mini with thirty games are up in arms at the prospect of paying £20 a year for at least 20 NES games. Also, that people who cheerfully pay £280 for a Switch and £50 for each Nintendo game suddenly baulk at the idea of paying, what, £1.50 a month for a year's online subscription.

The real surprise here is that Nintendo isn't vastly overvaluing this as they usually do and charging twenty quid a month.

They used to give them away free in Animal Crossing.

I bet you paid more than twenty quid for Animal Crossing.

About 30 probably.  And I got Animal Crossing (with saves I could back up too).   And a bunch of free NES games I didn't care about.

I don't care about the NES games. I don't want voice comms. I don't give a fig about Smash Bros. I wish they'd stayed free exactly as they are..

BUT, I'll be buying a membership so I can carry on playing Splatoon 2. It's going to cost me about £1:50 a month to keep access to that. I'd have paid double, triple, more for Splatoon 2. I am Splatoon 2's bee-atch.

I unexpectedly got a Switch for my birthday yesterday, up until then I've still been playing the Wii and Xbox 360, the last generation passed me by.

I put a good few hours into Zelda, what a bloody lovely game. The last Zelda I played was Twilight Princess and I got bored and stopped playing shortly after being turned into a wolf. This new Zelda is something else, I'm finding it hard to turn it off. It's reminding me of Fallout 3 which was one of my favourite games on the 360. I love being able to wander about and do my own thing.

I am having hardware issues though, the right hand joycon keeps losing sync. I sit about 5 metres away, is that too far? The left hand one is fine. I'm wondering if my phone or watch is interfering with it.

The buttons are awkward, fast swapping weapons is a bit of a stretch down from the analogue stick, is the pro controller any better? It bloody wants to be at £60. I can't imagine playing smash on those tiny joycons, I can see myself buying a pro at some point.

Yeah but all of them listed in one go? Seems a bit generous by Nintendo's standards.

I think this is gonna be VC moving forward, game pass but instead of current titles it's basically the Nintendo back catalog.

I don't imagine it'll be too long before we see GBA, SNES and N64 games on there.

I had been impressed that Nintendo had managed to finally figure out  a nice solution to multiple accounts per device. Now I am unimpressed they are leveraging this system to upsell you to a dearer family account. They giveth, and they taketh way.

The NES stuff is pretty nice, but they've been flogging that horse for a while now, it must be nearly dead.

I just can't see how anyone thinks this is a good deal, regardless of the price. Phone app for voice chat ffs. Nice.

It's a terrible solution, I agree, but I thought it was known the Switch has neither a microphone nor a mic jack, so launch was the time to get upset about this when the hardware was revealed.

I could be wrong but don't some Bluetooth headsets connect no problem to the switch?

It's not a 'good' deal per se - but at least it's cheap. £20 per year for online access, cloud saves, and a few other games thrown in is decent value in comparison to the other two. They offer more functionality, but cost more - so it's pretty comparable really.

Can it also transmit voice audio, potentially?

Yes. I use the Playstation wireless headset on my Switch, and that (on PS) can do that, so it's technically possible.

I'd be quite surprised if we don't see an official Bluetooth headset (either from Nintendo or from somebody like Hori) at some point. But who knows, they do seem hellbent on this partner app concept for some reason I've not worked out yet (my initial thought was it would all be handled via bluetooth, but right now it's just a mess of cables that make no sense at all. The console should talk to the phone and the phone then talk to a bluetooth headset all without a single cable IMO).

I can't set up a PlayStation 4 emulator in minutes and play games on my phone/shield TV, though. I can with NES. They're not even including the entire library. I know people frown over piracy but these games are so fucking old now. And retroarch has multiplayer built in too.

On the one hand, it sucks that its behind a paywall. On the other hand, 20 quid a year is basically nothing if you factor in the free games and discounts.

Hmm, it says special offers and deals not online discounts. Who knows what that means, but it could easily mean the opportunity to buy profile images, dashboard skins, virtual amiibos, tat like that.

They have added to the games though - they all have online multiplayer - even the single player ones (the example given was Zelda, where you can pass control between players online to essentially take turns on a play-through).

I'm not saying more NES games is good (they need to add SNES and N64 stuff IMO) - but they are also absolutely 100% not just ROM dumps. They, like all bad models, have 'had work done'.

Sounds like they sync the simulation on multiple machines and network the controller inputs.  So the games themselves will just be ROM dumps.
