So I bought a Switch today and got Zelda.

Anything else I should be getting? More memory? Pro controller? Screen protector? Any game suggestion past Mario/Splatoon/Skyrim?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Tropical Freeze, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are all gold. Can't go wrong with Odyssey and Splatoon 2, absolutely amazing games.

For eShop games, I really recommend the challenging 2D platformers Celeste, Slime-san and Flinthook and I put 300 hrs into Binding of Isaac, though it's not for everyone. The usual Stardew Valley and Minecraft ports are an excellent fit for the system, too. If you like shmups, Danmaku Unlimited 3, Steredenn and Zero Gunner 2 are all excellent, with Ikaruga coming later this month and a wide range of Neo Geo and Psikyo ports already available.

I bought a Pro Controller day one and it's a fantastic pad, very comfortable, but plenty of people get on fine with the Joycons (split in separate hands, not in the grip). I'd say see how you get on. Odyssey is arguably best with split Joycons.

I don't have a screen protector and it's been around the world and had pretty much daily use for a year without a scratch. Some people like the safety net, though, so it's up to you.

128Gb is probably the sweet spot for micro SD card memory expansion but it depends if you want to go digital. Nintendo games hold their value very well so you might well buy something physical for forty quid but get thirty back.

The Hori tough case is probably the best, most readily available option for taking it out of the house.

Enjoy!

It's a bit strange that they delayed this announcement, then told us basically nothing we didn't already know apart from cloud saves. It can't have taken them that long to realise people need backups*.

I've see some moaning about NES games, with the suggestion they don't add enough value to the package, but it's not that long since some people were losing their minds over a bunch of ROMs housed in some plastic tat. At least they've updated them with online play this time.

If that family sub works across seperate units then it'll be a decent enough deal for me, I think.

*It definitely did, though.

A child account, linked to my own account, will not share the benefits without paying for a family membership.

That's stupid.

Yeah, that’s my biggest problem with it so far, you’d think a single subscription would at least cover all accounts on a single Switch. As it is I pretty much have to buy a family subscription at nearly double the cost even though it’s just me and the boy who use the thing.

Also, NES games, again, FFS.

And that they're the only company without a free save backup system. I wonder if those people approving of a Switch tax and Nintendo's high prices in general will also approve of this.

I love my Switch to bits. But this is stupid.

Cloud saves should be free as standard. If my Switch gets stolen or lost I've lost all my saves. It gets taken out and about a lot, this is reasonably likely to happen.

And I'm not buying multiple times so my son can play Mario Kart on his profile. The Switch is a family friendly console, this isn't that.

Why can't Nintendo get online right? Someone said a while back that they should keep doing it stripped back and free, because Nintendo don't understand online gaming enough to do a premium offer. They were right.

The family price allows seven profiles to be attached, no mention of it it’s on the same device or can be across different ones but if you can just invite another ID then money saving forumites will be able to organise it so the cost is split eight ways.

That would be very Nintendo. Or you can buy it for a half of the price on the Switch Azerbaijan store if you pay in Manat.

How is not free cloud saves and having to have an account for each member of your family different to, say, PSN and XBL?

All Xbox one saves are cloud saves with or without a subscription. A single Xbox live subscription can be shared across all accounts logged into a system.

There’s no way they’re letting 8 forum randoms with different Switch consoles share one $35 account. There’ll be some clarification.

Basically, for me, this is 20 bucks a year for cloud saves. I’ll grudgingly pay up.

Just stick with Zelda for now game wise.

On the one hand, it sucks that its behind a paywall. On the other hand, 20 quid a year is basically nothing if you factor in the free games and discounts.

Hmm.

I think I'll just risk it. I don't play online so it's an expensive solution for backing up saves.

It'll be a shame to be locked out of the occasional online game of MK8 or whatever but I don't play enough to justify paying for it.

I am slightly concerned that a lot of the online games will dry up with players over this. I still think it is wise giving free basic online to everyone and allowing them to upgrade for a few extras.

Hopefully they'll give the first month for free at least so people can see what they're getting.

Bit disappointed that the games I've been playing online for free for almost a year now will suddenly be behind a paywall. I think I'll just give up on online play on my switch altogether to be honest, it's not like the infrastructure is there to easily play and chat with my mates or anything.

Am I understanding this? You pay $4 for a month and you get 20 NES games? I guess I'm misunderstanding something because it seems incredibly unlike Nintendo to go from charging you four quid per NES game on their old virtual console services, to giving twenty away for the same price.

Still no actual date, I guess because if they give it they're pretty much also announcing the release date for Smash Bros because there's no way they'll launch one without the other.

24th September is what people are saying.

This I did not know. Thought it was the same as on the 360.
