Bought Streets of Red, for £5 it’s not bad at all, but I can imagine it would shine in multiplayer as there just aren’t enough enemies on screen at once. Might try the Hard mode. Shame there’s no online play. Really like the pixel art and Carpenter-inspired chip tunes.

Got Golf Story today, what a gem! I didn't even realise it had a 2 player mode too. Full of lovely little touches, like starting the game with "dad's putter". Can't wait to see how this story develops.

It's a great little game and super funny as well.

I got the Anker Powercore 10000, it’s good enough to charge while playing and I think came out as a recommended model in an earlier Eurogamer roundup.

I have this one as well, works great for both the  Switch and my phone.

It's really surprising to me how many of my friends now own a Switch. Most of them haven't had a Nintendo console since the N64, so it's nice to scroll through my friend list and see the people I played Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 with when we were teenagers.

Nintendo done good.

Did anyone get Manticore?

Yes. It's decent enough. Shows it's roots a bit at times in terms of mission/level design, but looks decent and controls well enough. Seven and a half cups out of a carton.

My Switch definitely gets scratched by the bumpers in the dock.

Its taken since September to get enough small bits of grit stuck to the rubbery guides inside the dock to give the screen light scratches on both sides of the black bezel.

The online play should be free.  As @JPickford mentioned earlier, paid online access stops occasional players like me joining in.  On those occasions when I've had a free 24 hour pass I have given it a try to see what all the fuss is about and all the other players are harcore, well practised, and I barely start the game without being killed by a better player.

Yup. I dip in and out of Splatoon 2 every few weeks for a couple of games. Once I have to start paying, it'll probably get uninstalled - I don't have the time or inclination to "git gud" at it now, particularly since I basically just get slaughtered even in casual play by people with far more experience. The monthly bonuses would have to be pretty damn special to get me to fork over for it (I cancelled Xbox live months ago as never played my Xbox and never used the free games, and I'm on the verge of doing the same on my PS4...)

I think it depends what you get with it. I have Xbox Live Gold and pretty much never play online, but think it's worth the £40 a year for the free games and discounts, I hardly ever buy new games for it any more and have a pile of free games still left to play.

I'm sure Nintendo said they want to aim for $20 a year, so I don't mind paying that if we also get the odd free VC game.

What they currently plan to give subscribers is listed on their website, the perks currently are enticements for people to give them more money and some online enabled 8-bit games:

No Parties, No integrated voice chat... Online is a disgrace at the moment, and I love my Switch.

"a disgrace". Really? I mean it's free, it's stable, it works without bother for stuff like Splatoon 2 and MK8. More of a disgrace to start hiding some stuff behind a paywall IMO, but that's the way everyone else has gone and Nintendo are just following unfortunately.

It'll be interesting to see what they do finally offer under the £20 subscription service (we're going to find out more in a matter of weeks), but it feels like if people are prepared to label the currently completely free of charge stuff 'a disgrace' then Nintendo are not going to be able to win regardless....

This thread's kind of silly now. It was one thing when everyone was excited about 3-5 year old games, now they're 15 year old ports. It'll be £20 too.

I've got a Switch, and sure, it's great that it has all these games on it for people to play but it's pretty barren in terms of anything new and exciting. It's clearly doing well so what do I know? I just think the Wii U had way better games and yet no one wanted that. I guess the portability thing is the difference maker.

Ikuraga is a game with a cult following and one of the best shoot em ups ever made so obviously people are excited by the prospect of playing it on the go, portable, tate mode etc. It's not like there's fuck all else available and that's the only reason it's getting attention.

Saying the Wii U has better games by comparison, a system that's been out 5 years against one that's only been out a year doesn't mean much and is highly debatable anyway. Compare the Wii U after one year on the market. And do you really think the Switch library won't be amazing after another 4 years?

I get your point, however someone like yourself is in a massive minority. The WiiU was a disaster for Nintendo and most of the userbase for the Switch will either have not owned a WiiU at all, not even know what a WiiU is, or not had all those games already. So for a large portion of their audience, these re-releases are new games.

You also talk about not taking the Switch out of the dock ever and using a PC for Indie games, whoch then puts you into an even smaller demographic.

I would say that the Switch just isn't for you at this moment and that is just fine.

I'm starting to wonder, yeah.

I know I'm speaking against 'The Party' here but it's not like I don't want it to be good. I bought one and I like them but there's not a lot on there if you own anything else. Every time I check in here to see what's going on it's people excited about re-releases of old games. I get the appeal of being able to play them on the go if you're into that, I'm glad Ikaruga is available for those that want it but is that what the Switch is? A portable emulation machine for popular games of the last 15 years?

I've got four games on my Switch, only one - Mario, is not available on other platforms (and while I'm putting my neck on my line, I didn't think it was that great a Mario game). The other ones I'm looking at are maybe DKTF, a re-release I liked on the Wii U and Mario Tennis if that turns out to be good, but mainly there's just one - Octopath.

I'm probably missing the point because I never take the Switch out of its dock. For me it's a home console and I have a PC for all the indie stuff/re-releases. I only really plan to buy physical releases on the Switch that I can't get elsewhere and from that point of view, there's not much to get excited about.

I got a Wii U about a year or so after release and ended up with 10 great, original games for it - 3D World, MK8, Wonderful 101, Bayo 2, DKTF, etc. Sure, there weren't really any more than that, but the quality was great. I'm not seeing it so far from the Switch and I just wonder if they might settle into this 'emulation machine' thing that seems to be doing so well for them.

So far my switch has been used almost exclusively for Zelda, Mario and Xenoblade, I've gone through BOTW twice ( well, technically I've still got 1 shrine and the last boss on my second playthrough to do, but it's wel over 100 hours ) have started my second play through of Xenoblade 2 ( nearing the 200 hour mark total play time ) and once that is done I will likely return to Mario Odyssey.

Pretty much all of that play time has been done in hand held mode and the fact there are console quality games that don't "quite" look as good when in mobile mode is neither here nor there, it's the game I'm playing, not the graphics.

I've stayed away from rereleases and remasters, but if something I really lked comes out, and it gets a physical release, I will buy it for sure, there must be quite the following for Ikaruga out there and if they and new players get to experience it through a rerelease on the Switch then that's all good, I bought Cave Story ( from the trading folder here ) for the Switch, a game I could play on my PSP years ago, but the fact it was on the Switch, came in a nice box and was a physical release I could display was a huge factor in me buying and finally finishing the game ( it was great btw, you should play it and it's probably 10p on the PC :P ).

I'd love some new and original , exclusive Switch title sto come out, but it's early days yet, most third party publishers were NOT expecting anything from the new Nintendo platform, so they have little to bring to the table apart from remasters rereleases etc, it's exactly the same as the PS4/X1 launhes, wheer big 3d parties were cautious and we spent the next year to 18 months getting PS360 remasters as no one had proper new games to bring out.

It'll get there @Pockets, eventually greatness will come, for now you have a few great games to get on with and as you've said, you have a PC for the indie / rereleases, so you shouldn't be hurting for things to do :)

I think its hybrid nature adds a lot to its appeal, I've waited for games such as Dragon Quest Builders and Outlast II because being able to play them anywhere I choose really appeals to me. But there's still a mountain of stuff not available on other platforms. Obviously whether it appeals to you or not is another question but I find it difficult to understand how you could say there's nothing 'new and exciting' when Labo has been out only a week.

Yes I'm looking forward to E3. At the very least we know we're going to see the new Smash Bros, we'll probably see the new Fire Emblem and Yoshi as well. Pokemon is rumoured to be out this year which is the first time a mainline game has been released on a home console. There are rumours for Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Wave Rave, whatever Retro are doing (the third in their DKC trilogy?). Then there's Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3. There's a lot to look forward to :)
