Nintendo Switch

I'm just waiting for somebody else to confirm it still works - I believe (seem to remember reading) most of the problems are actually caused by the power input rather than the dock - and I'm using an additional official charger with my M002....so should be OK.

But I'm going to let somebody else be the canary in the cage.

Now that't out (and Mike will get £10 of my money because I didn't get a free code ;) ) can he hurry up with DDMR on Switch. Tell him @Flub tell him NOW!

I know the release date but I'm not allowed to say until it's 100% in stone. You shouldn't be waiting long though. As far as I'm aware it's done and has passed cert with Nintendo

Just set this up and it works perfectly. Thanks very much. My wife walked in on me playing prostrate Skyrim. I asked, boldly, "Are you impressed?" She said she felt sad.

I also have one and can lie in bed playing outlast 2, 2 joycons in either hand by my sides, shitting myself.

Mine’s an M001 and I’m the same, I use an official AC adapter but way too chicken to try it out.

Will update at some point!

I bought this for an iPad Mini and it works great with the Switch. Playing Rocket League horizontally is life changing

This changes everything. While playing undocked I've been resting the Switch on a shoe box.

Now I can clamp it to a shoe box!

Cheers for the recommendation.

Nintendo Co. is teaming up with San Francisco-based Scrum Ventures to scout startups working on new ways to play or use the Japanese company’s hit gaming console, the Switch.

The program, run by Scrum, will look for startups, teams within larger companies or university researchers developing new tools to improve the Nintendo Switch platform, including components, sensors, chips or other add-ons, the venture capital firm said. Scrum and Nintendo will provide developers with assistance to bring products to the market. Neither company plans to invest directly in the startups.

The move is a departure from Nintendo’s usual approach of working with established hardware suppliers and some of the newcomers may be able to release products under the Nintendo brand. The Kyoto-based company is seeking creative ideas that may lead to new gaming experiences for the Switch and help the device maintain strong sales momentum. Released a little more than year ago, the console has ignited a turnaround at the company and has sent shares almost doubling.

The Switch, which retails for about $300, is essentially a tablet that can be hooked up to a television or played on the go. It comes with two detachable controllers that are packed with numerous sensors, including infrared cameras and sophisticated vibration engines. Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U, fell far behind rival products from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp., but the Switch’s hybrid approach aptly predicted that gamers were looking for a new kind of device.

Scrum, an early-stage venture capital firm, said it will choose teams to work with before they pitch their ideas to Nintendo in the fall. The VC firm said proposals for software titles won’t be considered. Scrum has strong ties to Japan. Last month it unveiled a joint venture with Panasonic Corp. to identify technologies within the company that could be spun out into startups.

“We are always exploring ways to evolve entertainment,” Ko Shiota, a senior executive officer at Nintendo, said in a statement. “We look forward to discovering unique technologies that add to the Nintendo Switch experiences through the program managed by Scrum Ventures.”

By tapping outside developers, Nintendo’s unusual approach demonstrates it’s focused on experimentation. Investors have rewarded the company for off-the-wall ideas. Shares rose early this year after Nintendo introduced cardboard accessories that work with the Switch. The cardboard sheets can be folded over the system’s detachable controllers, which have sensors to detect movement, creating toy motorbike handles, a fishing rod or miniature piano.

The company in February increased its forecast for Switch hardware sales for the current period to 15 million, up from its original estimate of 10 million. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said he wants to sell about 37 million units by the end of March 2019 and said Switch sales are so far roughly on pace with the Wii, its best-selling home console in history.

And here's the application pages/details:

Nintendo Switch + Tech, managed by Scrum Ventures, seeks to find technologies that could lead to new experiences on Nintendo Switch. We welcome applications for all types of technologies that could be leveraged by Nintendo as the company continues to innovate experiences for Nintendo Switch, ranging from hardware to software.

Opportunities are wide open for startup teams of all stages, research teams at universities, or technology teams from larger corporations worldwide. A selective group of chosen applicants will have the unique opportunity to talk with the engineers behind Nintendo Switch and demo their technology.

I'm not sure how known it is but this thread is too long to trawl through the whole thing. I only just found out about the hidden Nintendo golf inside the switch which you get if you do the Iwata 'direct to you' movement with the joycons on his birthday and also the hidden message in the pro controller.

Mind. Blown.

Although I can't test the golf thing yet but I saw the "thanks" message with my own eyes.

Sadly they removed it with a recent firmware update so once you update it's gone

Boooo.

Oh well, I'd probably not play it and have it (in some sense) in golf story.

It was a nice little tribute I thought though.

Fun hour playing Star Allies with my 5 year old earlier today. The ability of the 2nd player to hand control back to the CPU whenever they want is great - she only likes playing as a few creatures (mainly Burning Leo), so if one of them isn’t on offer she lets the CPU drive until I find one.

The switch is simultaneously fantastic and awful for kids. Getting the joy-cons in the right grip mode and right order is stupidly fiddly compared to just plugging a pad into the right port on an old console, and setting up the steering/acceleration modes in Mario Kart is similarly complex. The joycons aren’t great for tiny hands either - due to the offset, it’s either tricky for them to reach the stick or the buttons.

Are there any third party mini controllers?

Ah. I'll take it off my wish list then.

I enjoy it. For £15 it's not bad, it's a fast twitch racer that isn't amazing, but isn't terrible. Nice wee bit of fun on the system.

I've been totting up some stuff I have to potentially trade at CEX and I reckon I have enough for a Switch. Anyone had any experience buying consoles from there? I've literally never bought anything from them.

I think @therearerules got his switch from them.

I’ve got a lot of Switch games from them, all of which have been VG+ to Mint - with physical media and no manuals, I think Switch games hold their condition very well.

I also got a joycon from them (neon yellow) which I’m less happy with - it all works, but the sticks creak a bit and it feels different from my other joycons in terms of finish. Got it mail order, so didn’t have a chance to test first.
