Can someone please talk me out of buying Xenoblade Chronicles? I've got a million games I've started and not completed but for some reason I'm massively tempted by this, as a Final Fantasy fan is it quite similar? Anybody got it and can give me any advice?

Cheers folks

You'll enjoy it and then when Nintendo see the numbers, they'll remaster the original and you'll have an even better game to play.

Does anyone have any tips for a SteamWorld Dig 2 newbie?

I've played a couple of hours and I don't get it yet. It feels like an exploration game, but also a bit metroidvania. The music is very relaxing, but overall the atmosphere is a bit strange. I'm also finding it a bit difficult in that I don't really know where to go or what I should be doing. There appears to be lots of impenetrable walls I can't get through too!

The reviews are all great. So I'm clearly missing something. I get the feeling I'm not playing it right. I didn't play the first game, is that the problem?

Can anyone tell me a bit more about the game or give me some tips?

I’ve recently started it too. All I can say is stick with it - once you get a couple more items of gear it starts getting really fun.

Bastards the lot of you

Now downloading...

A wise choice. I’m playing XBC2 at the moment. About 75% through the main story at about 50 hours. It’s magnificent, mental, beautiful, touching, and just plain bewildering in equal measure. I’ve never played anything quite like it, and I bloody love it. You will too.

Check out the OT, loads of good advice in there.

Ok. You're right it is kind of a Metroid type exploration game but unlike Metroid there's very little need for backtracking other than uncovering secrets and going for 100% completion.

Some blocks will remain indestructible and some you will get upgrades which will allow you to break them.

What you need to focus on is getting to the points on your map marked with an 'x' you do so by mining your way there.

You'll come across lifts which will take you back to the town from the mine and the main game consists of trading in the gems you've mined for upgrades to your weapons and abilities - that's the main gameplay loop, mining and upgrading.

It's very laidback but you aren't playing it wrong. It's a slow burner and one which might take a little while to 'get' - it did with me but ended up being one of favourite games of last year, and by miles my favourite indie game.

Another half an hour and it's all clicked into place. Lovely stuff.

I'm going to come out with a massively outlandish comment now that may get me a forum ban..... I've spent about 5 or 6 hours on Xenoblade now and I actually prefer it to Zelda  I know they're hugely different but I'm enjoying myself a lot more playing this than I did BOTW.

Neg away, I deserve it....

Perfectly reasonable. It's my favourite J-RPG of the last decade or so.

I wonder what stands out to you in Xenoblade vs Zelda...

Let’s just call it Breasts of the Wild.

Srsly, both are amazing, immersive, very different games. I love ‘em both. XBC2 was very underrated.

I think what a lot of it is if I'm honest, although I don't particularly like hand holding in games Zelda went too far the other way for me and at times I genuinely felt lost, I know that's the reason a lot of people loved it but for me it was too much, Xenoblade on the other hand just seems slightly more structured / suited to my style of play, I know where I'm going, I've got main missions and side missions, and although it's open world I never feel like I haven't a clue where I'm meant to be.

I'm really loving this so far, first game I've played in ages where I've been sat at work waiting for home time googling tips videos and reading through the OT on here

Everyone involved in the making of this should be ashamed of themselves.

Having made the mistake of buying NBA Playgrounds, I'll be receiving a free copy of this by way of apology from the publishers. Yes, really.

Needless to say, I won't be sullying my home icons with it.

XC2 isn’t really open world, it’s just very very big curated levels, which I think suits me more.

XCX on the Wii U was proper open world, and there was just too much world full of nothing much (although a bigger problem was that game’s total personality bypass). I’m yet to play BotW, but I suspect I may feel the same as you.

110hrs into XC2 and loving it to bits.

It feels completely linear to me. You can do side quests which always seem worthwhile but there's very little to find out wandering. You're basically funneled through these large areas with specific things to do in each. The exploration is more just making your way from A to B through a big beautiful chunk of landscape.

All the xenoblade talk had me confused for a bit.... The wiu game was fantastic, one of the best games I've played.  The wii u one was a huge disappointment.... Have yet but to try the switch one, but doubt it will trouble Zelda in terms of time I put into it.

Yeah, XBC2 is very linear from a plot and navigation perspective, but totally open in how you build and mix your blades and your drivers - and that’s where all the variety and freedom and depth comes in.

BOTW is the finest open world ever created, with the greatest blend of game systems that deliver genuinely emergent gameplay in pretty much every encounter.

I love that the Switch is home to both, and I’ll comfortably top 250 hours between them.

Is Xenoblade 2 a more linear game?  Zelda is about as open world as you can get and Tbh I am not sure I like the open worldesque Mario (I have never enjoyed Mario more than SMW on the Snes).

There are degrees of open world of course, I'm not sure any of SMO takes more than 5 minutes to get across the entire area you're in at the time, Zelda of course I don't want to even imagine.

And that's why, despite loving Zelda I'm really not far into it, it's overwhelming and I never feel like I want to devote enough time for it, I've made good progress on 2 flights and I suspect I'll next play it on the next one.  Which is fine, it'll probably take me a decade to complete but what's wrong with that?

But SMO I've rinsed to the best of my abilities, because while open, there's a focus to any specific world.  You could argue fast travel means Zelda can be as organised into areas as Mario but it doesn't really feel that way.

Nintendo resting on their laurels is worst Nintendo.

Because videogame companies resting on their laurels always fall back on that lazy 'wacky programming kit with build-your-own cardboard toolset' stuff right?

We get you are not looking forward to some of the Wii U ports mate, but ignoring all the other stuff Nintendo are/have done so far this gen is just a bit, well, dickish.

If you're going to accuse any company of resting on their laurels, it's gotta be Microsoft. I've no idea how Nintendo over the last 12 months can be accused of being lazy. At least wait till E3.
