Should I grab an extra controller? Right now I'll probably only be on Mario, however I'd like to test out some multiplayer stuff also.

IMO, you don't need to. The console is complete out of the box and most multiplayer games are built with two separate Joy-con's in mind.

I like the Joy-Con grip, but the Pro pad is totally amazing and totally worth getting as well.

Ok guys, I got this...

treat yourself to a pro controller if you can afford and are going to be playing a fair time I’m docked mode

If you have massive bear hands then a Pro controller will do you good in the long run. I find the longer sticks and handles easier for sessions longer than half an hour.

Split Joycons are fine for 3D games but I didn't like it for anything 2D. The joycon grip is fine for the majority of people.

Favourite control method is totally subjective (as you can see) and there’s no right way so I would see how you get on. If it turns out you do actually have the hands and fingers of a pixie then stick with the joycons.

Seriously, I can only play handheld for about an hour befor I get cramps and I really struggle with split joycons, it just feels.....weird.

Echoing what most people have already said, but I didn't pick up a Pro controller until a good 6 months into my Switch ownership. Whilst it is lovely and I'd always choose to use it when playing in docked mode, it's by no means "essential". I was doing just fine with the joy-cons. See how you get on, but keep in mind the knowledge that the Pro controller is a lovely luxury to have if you do find you've got £50 burning a hole in your pocket.

It's really, really not - and I say that as somebody who has one.

The pro controller is lovely, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the joy-cons out of the box - either in the included grip or held separately. The obvious advice is to try those first and see how you get on, only then consider if you need to drop another £50 on a pro.

It's a lovely, luxury item the pro - but it's not essential at all.

I have to agree here too. I have a pro and admittedly I use it for the majority of the time (play mainly docked). But the joycons on the included handle thing is fine too.

But dont under estimate the comfort comfort of the pro controller. It feels lovely to hold - possibly my favourite joypad since I first got hold of a SNES pad way back when.

Just to add to the controller confusion, I used to play split joy  con all the time and was happy, I now play 90% of the time with the 8bitdo SF30PRO.

I preordered Dark Souls yesterday, never played any of them. Looking forward to it :)

Respect. I really like the game but I find it absolutely brick. I managed to finish Celeste (A-sides only, admittedly) but I've been stuck on Slime-san for ages. Fantastic little game, though. I'll get back to it.
