Why even return it to Nintendo; for the privilege of being charged money for repairing their shoddy hardware? Return to the retailer as faulty goods and get a brand new replacement or refund.

Yes but SAVE DATA!

Just did a bit of research and seemingly it’s very common and cases of free repairs. Some YouTube guy got it back 3 days after sending it.

Just backup to an external USB device or SD card or online?

Lolwut? That should be the correct answer but alas you’ve clearly not been paying attention.

No backup of saves in any way currently on the Switch unless you transfer them and your entire account to another console, hence my comment.

Ask the retailer to let you transfer your saves to your new console when you do the return.

Amazon sent me a new console and gave me two weeks to return my faulty one.

That is astonishing, remarkably anti-consumer. With the PlayStation it's been possible to backup saves since the PS1, Nintendo are catching up with features from 24 years ago.

You are such a curio. You know things, yet you don’t. You are NEG, yet you are not. You are Kirby, yet you are Dedede.

He's Player 2 with the controller unplugged.

Ha, he's right though. Cloud saves better be coming with this much delayed online service that's due in September.

Oh sure, I've been banging on about Nintendo's "online services" for ages now. The lack of cloud saves and a dedicated content library are sticking points. It just seems our pink marshmellow here knows this, yet at the same time is surprised by it. (null)

Yeah he's fond of prodding the hornets nest. Without putting too fine a point on it I'd put it down to console envy. Expect things to change once @Kirby has a Switch.

Well the GC had memory cards, sure Wii could save games to the SD card.

Seems an odd omission from a new console these days TBH... I would have expected Nintendo to have  at least allow saving to SD/USB sticks by now on a firmware update since it's been out over a year now... I can understand their reluctance I guess (potential weakness to allow hackng) etc but still poor show from Nintendo IMHO. Anyway it is what it is....

My assumption is it's going to be part of their online service - which they had planned would be in place by now originally. I'd not be surprised if it's not, but I think it might be in some form or another (might not be automatic, might be some manual process to basically 'back-up' your Switch manually should you ever want to ahead of it going for repair etc).

It's easy to see why they are being careful though - it's an obvious attack vector for hacking. It's also, and this is going to ruffle some feathers so brace yourself, something that people like to get all puffed up and indignant about - despite the fact that it's really pretty unlikely to ever actually be an issue for them. I mean they sell millions, and the vast majority of folks will never have an issue.

They must have lost millions and millions on both the DS and 3DS, and I suspect that the rampant piracy could have been quite off-putting for publishers, too.

Full disclosure, I saw that the Wii U BotW had leaked a few days early before my day one Switch was turning up. I got home from work at half five and by half seven I was playing it on a totally legit console which I'd never hacked previously at all and which never got banned afterwards. Their security was a complete joke.

I totally understand their desire (assumed) to get this locked up as tight as possible.

Edit: Also, I totally accept that wasn't cool but as I bought it on Switch day one and deleted the Wii U version after twenty minutes, I don't feel it's that bad.

Pretty sure they made shitloads of money.

Piracy doesn't necessarily translate to losses. Did you end up buying Zelda?

I know people that bought the DS (and PS1) because of the ease of piracy. They would never have bought most of the games that played and the majority they didn't play more than an hour anyway.

So it's a win for Nintendo that they sold a ton of extra hardware even if games where not bought.

Yep, I remember 90% of children with a DS had a flash cart and pirated games, supplied by their parents! :P The Switch might follow the same fate, if the Tegra X1 exploit comes to fruition and homebrew is easy to install.

Which is why they are altering it in a forthcoming revision at a hardware level.

Well, I know loads of folk who just bought an R4 who may have otherwise bought a load of games - not everything they pirated, of course, but why buy anything at all if you can have it so free and easily? I lived in China at the time where there were no official games available and just torrented the entire back catalogue.

I was back in the UK for the 3DS and spent about a grand on games. Small sample size but I'm skeptical of the idea that piracy doesn't have a direct impact on sales - it always sounds like bollocks justification to me.

I didn't say it didn't directly impact sales, I said it doesn't necessarily translate to losses. Lots of people bought R4s but they also bought DSes, people who may not have bought anything without them.

I don't think it's black and white.

So is that a no on buying Zelda?

To be honest I've not got time to debate at the mo, I'm sure we're on a similar page. And I already said I bought it with the day one Switch.

Fair play, I had an extra copy to cover it :P

Called Game "customer service" this morning and after sitting on hole for an age was told that they give a 12 month warranty and that was that.

Followed by a snide "you should have bought the extended warranty".

A) fuck em

B) stop buying shit from them

They're violating EU law. Take them to the small claims court, or arrange for your lawyer to contact them.

There is, of course, this minor point:

Quote

After 6 months, in most EU countries, you need to prove that the defect already existed on receipt of the goods - for example, by showing that it is due to the poor quality of the materials used.
