I grabbed Doom for a smidge under £30, thanks to the gold points bringing it down just enough.

Hard as nails with the sticks, though. I’ve turned on motion aiming and still can’t hit the broad side of a barn!

Did wonder about those borders, seems odd that it would let you do a sub par layout.

i'm not sure what wide mode does? but there probably should be borders top/bottom, when playing a vertical shmup (usually 4:3) on a rotated widescreen monitor (usually16:9)

Okay I'm no shmup man but aren't those always 16:9 on its side rather than 4:3? Ie no borders when rotated? Maybe I'm talking bollocks :D

more modern arcade machines probably use widescreen displays (16:9), for fighting games and other stuff i guess. but vertical shmups are usually 4:3 rotated, played on older arcade machines with 4:3 rotated monitors. the new arcade version of Aka to Blue might be 16:9 rotated.

edit- i'm not sure about danmaku unlimited 3 mind, maybe it is supposed to be 16:9 (no borders) when rotated.

I know everyone already is aware of this but Axiom Verge is a bit good.

I played it for 30 mins and got owned by the first boss, didn’t think it was my thing but today I have had a proper go and agree with you - it’s very good to play but I’m not a fan of the gfx on this one, wish it was more 16bit than 8bit!

Are the multiplayer DOOM servers populated? Easy to get a game?

Edit: I ask because I’m a bit day drunk and only need the flimsiest of excuses to buy this despite already owning it on Xbox.

Even knowing beforehand that the resolution was going to be fairly low, I was still pretty shocked at just how blurry it looks undocked, especially text, so prepare yourself for that if you make a drunk purchase. Although I guess if you're drunk it won't make much difference. Gyro aiming is great though.

It is 16 bit. As you'll see when you

Spoiler

do the 8 bit bits ;)

Also, all the bosses have been piss easy so far. Most have places you can stand and shoot but not get hit.

I'd been a little bummed out by the lack of first-person dungeon crawlers on Switch, of the Eye of the Beholder/Legend of Grimrock/Etrian Odyssey variety. There was one dodgy contender called Heroes of the Monkey Tavern whose demo didn't impress me at all, but that was about it.

I bought Severed in the sale on the strength of how much I loved Guacamelee, not realising until recently that Drinkbox had made a new game. Imagine my delight on discovering, literally while playing it, that it's not just a first-person adventure, but the very grid-based first-person dungeon crawler I'd been after all along.

Dungeon Master with Guacamelee's art style and exclusively touch screen combat shouldn't really work but it's probably my favourite of the bunch I bought in the sale. A quick search on here finds a fair amount of negative impressions, so it's clearly not for everyone. Seems pretty short too - think I'm about halfway through in about two and a half hours - but it was cheap enough to excuse its brevity. Did any other Guacamelee fans give this one a try?

Monkey Tavern's controls on Switch are despicable.  It's meant to be pretty decent but I find it nigh on unplayable.  I'd love to see a port of Grimrock.

Both Grimrocks would be amazing. Hopefully we'll get an Etrian Odyssey too - they'd have to implement some kind of transparent map overlay when you hold down a shoulder button to compensate for the lack of a second screen, but I think it could work.

I think it sits somewhere inbetween 8bit and 16bit. Some of the bosses are quite detailed, and there are a few quite modern particle type effects too, but overall the levels themselves, enemies etc. aren't quite up there with Super Metroid. In saying that Thomas Happ made Axiom Verge on his own so it's a pretty phenomenal achievement.

Between 8 and 16 bit would be 16 bit, wouldn't it :)

Very few 16 bit games are up there with Super Metroid either, remember.

In an amazing throwback to the NES days of cartridge-blowing, someone suggested I try to fix my spasming left joycon calibration issue by pushing the analogue stick to the side and blowing into it. Unbelievably, it seems to have worked. My left analogue stick no longer thinks it's being pressed spontaneously, and when I test it in the calibration menu, it responds normally. :o

20:40! I reckon 19.XX is possible but will need a really good run.

Ok done for now.

There's still time gains to be made here, probably another 20-30s on a really good run, but not sure I have the patience! May try with the other characters but not confident of hitting sub-20 with either of them.

This is a wicked little game and a bargain to boot.

I saw Mighty Gunvolt Burst was sorta cheap. I've not had any experience with the series. To buy or not to buy?

Currently making my way through Blaster Master Zero which feels like the greatest platformer ever made compared to the jank of Mummy Demastered.

Mummy Demastered = jank? Oh man! I was hoping that or Slain would be awesome as I like the look of both of them. Dying for a really cool 2d action game. Will likely plump for Axiom Verge now especially as it’s in the sale

The Wii U gamepad used to have the same issue, I had to blow into my left stick all the time.

What a lovely surprise - I just had a message from Nintendo UK to say that i have won £50 worth of e-shop vouchers, as i entered a competition to list my ten favourite switch games.

Only problem is, I don't know what to spend it on. I have all the big hitters.

Anyone wanna buy a £50 e-shop voucher? ^_^ (really want Far Cry 5 on ps4 tomorrow)
