For those that missed it, ARK is coming to the switch. Remarkably it seems to be running reasonably well based on pre-alpha handheld footage. I say remarkable because ARK is phenomenally badly optimised on PS4/Xbox one.

Framerate is a bit low but it's like that on all systems.

Tried the demo of Deep Ones as the Speccy visuals caught my eye. Good Lord I feel bad for laying into small indie developers especially ones that at least give us a free demo, but I haven't actually played anything with mechanics this bad since the 80's. Platforms you can't see, Insta death, repeating sections over and over. It's one thing looking like the 8 bit days but these fellas have gone the whole hog. I'm surprised there's no 20 minute loading screen.

I bought mine from amazon and they just credited me the amount to buy another one so I did. Tesco did the same for my faulty PS4 pad, well partial amount that pretty much covered a new pad.

I thought I'd try this just now before I sent them off to Nintendo. After a bit of grumbling they agreed to send an entire replacement switch console (!) which I will then take the new joycons from and send my old ones back with the new console. Seems a bit ridiculous but that's how the CS wanted to do it.

So I should get some new working joycons AND I get to experience unboxing a brand new switch again!

I’m guessing some of you lovely Switch owners have the Hori compact playstand, so can you safely place it on upright for tate mode in various shmups? Ta.

I have it at work, but haven’t tried tate. Not sure it’ll be great, TBH - the stand is really lightweight, and achieves stability partially by hooking into the notches on the base of the Switch with little bumps. I’d worry that it wouldn’t have the weight to hold it vertically, and the Switch edge may slide around on the same bumps. I’ll try it next time I take my Switch in.

It feels pretty sturdy! I don't think I have any games to demo it but it is solid on the steeper angle.

I think people need to realise that the Switch doesn't represent an upgrade to them playing games in the same way that watching films on an iPhone isn't an upgrade on TV or cinema.

People are paying because its new to them. Not everyone bought Doom on the PS4 or Xbox One and not everyone bought a PS4 or Xbox One.

Many people are buying Doom for the first time and it's encouraging to publishers that these games are selling and at full price. It's a good look for Nintendo cos it means that third parties can be confident that when they bring more games, there's a market for them.

It just sucks for us, sure. So buy it when it drops in price.

Or......you buy it for £50 new, play it and then get probably £40 on eBay for it.

Coming from PS4 the high prices are jarring at first, but they hold value so if you sell you don’t lose out. I bought 1-2  Switch for £35, played it with the kids for a few weeks, they got bored so I sold it for £32.

Xbox One footage from GDC. Looks pretty cool. I like how the factions are all cosmetically completely different. Doesn't look to be out until late 2018 though :(

My only concern (which they haven't mentioned yet, but maybe they do later on in the video) is that seemingly there's no fog of war. Being able to see everything is obviously a different kind of strategy to scouting. I guess it works better for smaller maps like these.

Wargroove is looking really ace. Hopefully this game will be a surprise hit and encourage an Advance Wars sequel for the Switch.

The developers have suggested that it will have Fog of War:

We haven't shown much fog of war in our footage, as we're still trying to work out the details of how it will work, but it's something that will likely feature in the final game. We're also exploring having "unexplored terrain" in addition to fog of war, mainly for certain campaign missions.

For campaign maps and scenarios, the creator will have the power to determine whether the map is subject to fog of war, or if it has clear line of sight.

For multiplayer, the creator of the lobby will probably be able to choose it, amongst other game settings. It seems unlikely that "hidden terrain" would be available in multiplayer, as it would potentially give some players an unfair advantage.

Currently, the dogs are designed as the reconnaissance unit!

It is reassuring to see the devs taking their time with the game, as frustrating as waiting can be. One of the great strengths of AW was the balancing of the units (for the first game at least, before Sammi and mech spamming became overpowered) and I would hate for this to be compromised by rushing to hit a release date.

Think I'll probably get one as I really yearn for a proper d-pad when handheld. I have a converter that lets me use loads of other controllers with d-pads in docked mode.

It might be a bit weird getting rumble from only the right side, though...

A heads up for Switch owners :)

Just got my Switch dock back from repair. Turned on the switch one morning to find no display when docked and the screen flashing on/off constantly on the unit itself. It wouldn't charge from the dock either. Phoned Nintendo who said after some troubleshooting to send the dock and HDMI cable to them.

After a week they sent me an email saying it was "operating system error" and to fork out £29 for the repair. Not really having much of a choice, I did. The repair was then carried out and they sent a different dock back to me along with a letter saying I have 12 months warranty as of the repair. All working fine now, but one to be aware of if sending your Switch or dock back.

Glad to be able to game on the big screen again!!!
