I’d be tempted if I could get the Splatoon or Xenoblade one for £50-55. But they seem to be a fiver to a tenner more cos coloured plastic is so much more expensive. Despite all joycon colours costing the same. <_<

I'm actually getting seriously tempted by a Switch now. Despite having next to no interest in Nintendos own games. Odd situation to be in. Do people think this third party renaissance will continue? I'm primarily a PC gamer but the simple format is tempting.

I think it depends what type of games you like. Whilst I expect third party support to continue to grow you're still unlikely to end up with the latest Assassin's Creed or Battlefield, for example. But if you like indie games and the hybrid/handheld nature of the console appeals then yeah you'll get lots of use out of it.

I know we've had this debate a thousand times, but I still get all confused when I read stuff like this. Because, Nintendo does so many *different* types of games. The idea that I could look at all of their output and say there is nothing really there for me at all? Mindblowing. Not a thing from a set of games that goes from Splatoon to Labo, from Xenoblade to Mario, from Zelda to Kirby, from ARMS to Fire Emblem. It's about as diverse a range as any publisher offers. And yet "Nintendo games" get thrown into one bucket labelled 'shallow, bright, primary-colored, non-mature stuff'.

Not to pick on @El Spatula but usually what I see is that people look at games in the range of third/first person adventures that differ mostly in mechanics or setting but are generally in a narrow spectrum. So Nintendo don't appeal as much because they don't cater mostly to people who enjoy certain kinds of games.

I think it's great that people such as @El Spatula are interested in Switch despite accepting they have little interest in Nintendo's own output. This is exactly what it needs and why games such as Dark Souls, Skyrim, Doom etc. are important.

It should be perfectly reasonable to be drawn to the format itself and the other games on there, in the same way that not everyone is buying a PlayStation for Uncharted or an Xbox for Forza and Halo.

Modern HD bullet hell monstrosity, Danmaku Unlimited 3, is out tomorrow for about ten dollars. Dunno about EU price yet. It's described by @clippa as 'balls hard' though it supposedly has some difficulty adjustments in this release to make it more palatable for noobs.

It looks absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait.

Never clicked for me either, though I'm still planning to give it a third chance sometime. But even when discounting BotW, the Switch is still totally worth it. Go for it :)

I like it, but not as a Zelda. It's a more zen-like explore 'em up with (apologies in advance) dreadful combat. It's awesome to waste time in, but I find it hard to imagine people losing their minds over it.

But yeah, a year on and the Switch has a good selection of games overall. :)

Not really commenting on your opinion just the term you used "Zen like". I think it's a good description but also demonstrative of just how difficult it can be to explain why Breath of The Wild is so great just using words.

I was listening to the philosopher John Gray on Desert Island Discs yesterday and one of his choices was Federico Mompou. He said he liked its use of silence in which the spaces between notes are important in describing what cannot be described any other way.

I think BoTW is a lot like that, and in fact it struck me just how similar to Mompou's music its soundtrack is too (and Eric Satie). But i often find myself just taking in the silence, the spaces, my mind going off somewhere.

Zen like :)

Absolutely, and it's always the first thing which strikes me whenever I dip back into it. The ambient foliage is so effective, I'm not quite sure how or why, and the sparse use of piano is probably some of my favourite use of music in any game. At the first little cluster of notes, I'm in that space, and then you're instantly attuned to the less is more approach, and every tiny rustle in the breeze feels significant, it feels alive. It's very hard to describe but I definitely get the same sense after meditating (or a smashing wank).

I've held off Code of Princess on Steam so I'll be buying it on Switch.

As for Viewtiful Joe, that is one of my favourite games of all time. Who do I kill to get it?

Two of my best gaming memories have been Gamecube related.  One was waiting in all day and most of the evening for an import version of Resident Evil 4 and a copy of Freeloader, only for the delivery to arrive at nearly 9pm when all hope was lost...stayed up all night.

The other was playing through Viewtiful Joe with a friend drunk on whiskey, meaning getting stuck on Hulk Davidson for so long, that the quote 'DAVIDSON IS IN THE HOUSE.  HULK DAVIDSON IS JUST BORN TO BE WILD.' is forever burned in my mind.

BotW should be, without doubt, an incredibly boring game. Not a lot happens. You run about wide open spaces with not a lot in them. There isn't much music. The combat is a bit shit. It's severely lacking in the good old Zelda dungeons. The story is barebones, even for Zelda.

And yet...

And yet, somehow, it is more than the some of its parts. It's full of moments that start purely because you look at something - a distant tower, a rocky outcrop, a lantern hanging over some enemies - and say to yourself "can I...?" and it turns out, in almost every instance, you absolutely can.

It is extremely difficult to bounce off the gamey edges of the game, the things that remind you you're playing a game, limited by coding and memory and lack of imagination. Instead, pretty much anything you care to try will probably work.

It's one of the most serenely relaxing games, but this means it also occasionally steps over the line into aimless and dull, and for me at least, means its easy to drift away and not feel any burning desire to return, which is why I've been on three beasts for months.

Ordered these bad boys last night. No idea why, as my joy cons work fine, and i have an 8bitdo snes pad for mario kart multiplayer.

Just love the colour though!

I got a second hand one of these with CEX credit (love the colour, and find the neon red joycon a bit too pink - nothing against pink, but the neon pink joycon does it much better) but I haven't used it much - the stick creaks and the finish is different from all my other joy-cons, much smoother and slipperier. I'm sure the stick creak is just wear, but the finish difference is odd - I'd be interested to know if your brand new ones are the same, or if that's also a result of wear. TBH, probably going to trade it back and eat the difference.

How is it? Can it be navigated well without knowing Japanese?

It's just pretty basic mahjongg, which is all I wanted really. If you know how to play there's not much you need to navigate. You could always point Google Translate on your telephone/tablet at it anyway.

Might pick it up at some point then. £3.50 seems a bargain.

The combat in Zelda BOTW is so above and beyond the description of "dreadful" that yes, it's insulting and utterly ignorant. Insulting to the taste and intelligence of the people who have played the game and mastered it's combat systems and to the people who made it.

Sure, opinion is all based on impression but fuck me, sometimes.

After 12 months of Horizon and Bloodborne, yes, it is dreadful. I find myself evading combat because it's simply not up to snuff. It's not a fun component. Doesn't make the game itself problematic, which goes to show how much the rest makes up for it. I even like the weapon degradation. Combat is without a doubt the weakest link in this Zelda though.

I enjoyed Horizon but fuck me the combat has nothing on Zelda.
