Nintendo Switch

That's weird. My friends three kids all said the same about the graphics. They also wanted to trade in the XB1, but ended up getting a Switch without having to do so... Anyway, it turns out my mate can't bear with his kids hogging Mario Kart all the time so he might trade in the XB1 for a second Switch!

Shock - games they have released on Switch have outsold games they haven't so far. More news as it breaks. Let's see how 'Labo' goes....

Also, are we seriously going to argue that the male 25-34 demographic is the Nintendo Core now? I thought that was kids and parents? It seems like the argument against Nintendo doing well moves all over the shop as needed - anything apart from just saying "yep, they are doing well".

Hold on, more good news - but it's still just that Nintendo core and early adopters right....

Isn't it more that the surveys ask how many people onnyiur household play the games, and what age they are? They're not going to be entirely accurate but I imagine Nintendo know what they're doing. It was a conscious decision to go after gamers first then broaden their user base, doing so from a healthy position. If they targeted non gamers to begin with it wouldn't have worked.

Absolutely, they've certainly targeted gamers. It's the assertion that it's only the 'Nintendo Core' and 'Early Adopters' that have pushed Switch sales so far I disagree with. They are *clearly* attracting gamers from outside of the previous Wii U audience. Switch is clearly being bought by people that were not part of the previous constituencies. It's gone past the point we can say it's just the usual people buying a new Nintendo system.

The translation from the interview states they've got most of the early adopters who really like Nintendo's games, if that wasn't so, they wouldn't feel the need to come out with something like Labo, they would just keep on pumping out more traditional Nintendo games if they felt that was enough to continue selling systems at the current pace. You also forget the 3DS audience buying into it, which some people argue the Switch also replaces entirely, or lapsed former Nintendo gamers who didn't like the Wii U concept, but bought earlier Nintendo home consoles.

Quote

Nintendo has reached most of the people who were early adopters because they really like Nintendo’s games.

That's the exact translation from the interview, if you disagree so vehemently about it, e-mail the CEO and tell him he is wrong.

Mushi, why are you so deliberately obtuse all the damn time?

The Switch is clearly, clearly, CLEARLY at this point selling to a broader audience than Nintendo managed to capture with the Wii U - it's clearly not just core Nintendo fans that are buying it. You can go on quoting some old interview all you like (even when it's clear to me what Nintendo are saying in it is 'we're off to a good start, let's now expand further in multiple directions'), but I can't see your point - it's the forum equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying lalalalala while the sales data comes in.

They've sold more Switch units in the first year than they did Wii U units in it's entire lifetime. They've sold more Switch units in 10 months than any other piece of hardware (from anyone) ever in the US. It's just odd to try and say it's current success was always going to happen because it's only sold so far to the people that were always going to buy it anyway.

I agree with this. They're obviously selling to people who might ordinarily ignore games, or Nintendo, even if they are in 25-35 age range, lapsed gamers or whatever.

I mean if that's not true why didn't the Wii U sell this many?

I think that interview is just a very typically conservative Japanese response.

Because the Wii U, despite Nintendo's best efforts *laughs*, wasn't actually targeted towards the Corebois™. Only dads who didn't have their own TV bought that thing. The rest of the market was just utterly confused and thought it was some sort of an add-on for the original Wii.

It's not that unreasonable to think that the current Switch numbers are due to the enthusiasts and core audience.

But we'll see in due time. If the Switch manages to reach even a quarter of the Wii numbers then the people saying "Nintendo have reached a broader audience" might have a point.

Yeah I know why the Wii U failed, it didn't even reach the core Nintendo audience, not in numbers anyway. People said this was because their audience had shrunk too of course.

I dunno, Switch already has a pretty broad range of software, but if you can tap into other markets such as they're aiming for with Labo then it's only going to bolster it further.

As for selling a quarter of what the Wii sold that figure can't be far off.

"Nintendo are doomed." "They should go third-party." "There is not a big enough audience for them on their own niche platforms anymore." "Kids have moved to smartphones and tablets."

Switch sells faster than any other hardware platform in history in the US, dominates in Japan, even does well in most of Europe.

It's just their core audience. They've not reached anyone new. They need to sell more to prove anything.

Totally anecdotal but its amazing how many of the kids in my son's class (he's 8) have gotten Switches (So far 6 of 30). There are friends of his begging their parents to trade in their Xbox One S's/PS4's for a Switch as they perceive the GFX to be better, and that's what all there friends now have. I'm pretty amazed that is has caught on so quickly.

Were they all born in a leap year otherwise how can they all like the switch of they haven’t owned a snes before?

Right now yes but it's not even been out a year.

No mario, Zelda or splatoon this year though - in fact what are the big releases this year? Looks pretty barren to me, other than an avalanche of indie games.

Games that appeal to me and are fairly big releases.... (Not including remasters etc from older Nintendo consoles)

Bayonetta 3

Ys VIII (Not necassarily triple A but it's quite a long running series)

Fire Emblem (Unconfirmed date but meant to be 2018)

Dragon Quest Builders

Lost Sphear (Out today)

Payday 2

Kirby

Nintendo Labo

Mario Tennis

Wolfenstein 2 (Unconfirmed date but meant to be 2018)

Yoshi (Unconfirmed date but meant to be 2018)

Project Octopath Traveler

That's all without any real reveals for the year yet in all fairness... We haven't even gotten through January.

I would be surprised if there isn't a smash bros out this year along with some other surprises Nintendo side. That's before any 3rd part announcements....

To me that looks like a game a month without including indie's or announcements yet to be made. I don't even have enough time for a game a month let alone more than that these days :D

I'm also expecting a 2D mario at some point - either Mario Maker or a NSMB type game.

IMO - I'd like them to combine it in some way - have a proper 2D style Mario story stuff, but with Maker stuff.  Some of the 2D levels in Mario Odyssey are amazing and I'd like to see that level of ingenuity in the next regular 2D mario.

I'm still confused how "Campaign" went from being a neatly evocative name for the single player modes of Command & Conquer and Warcraft to a catch-all term for single player modes, even in genres where it makes absolutely no sense.

yes - that was pretty wanky of me :D

changed it to 'story stuff'

How do you know?

In fact I'd be unsurprised if this summer we got a 2D Mario (/Maker) and if this Christmas we get a sequel to ALBW/2D Zelda remake.
